  • In this video, Greg mills up a ponderosa pine log into our board and batten siding for our barn. Some of these pieces are so beautiful that we can't believe this will be our siding. The blueing is fun to discover when you start to mill and open up the log. Can't wait to see how we will arrange it on the barn.
    ***At the end of the video, Greg teases a bit about something new we have to share about the barn...any guesses? Let us know in the comments! Plus, I'm always curious if you read this description! LOL!
    Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    Good morning. I think those boards will be fine from what I could see. Have a great day. Thanks

    Howdy y’all- it’s always a pleasure watching you saw. Great way to unwind a bit at the end of the day. That log had a good yield. Those boards will look great on the side of the barn. Blue pine is really pretty. We have to be careful with our yellow pine in the warmer weather or it will all turn blue. People here don’t seem to like it as much. Hope you have a great weekend. God bless

      Thank you, Paul! I think the blue is cool stuff. Fun milling it to see what you get. I feel like it’s time for that deck of logs to get milled up. Doesn’t need to sit for another winter. Thanks so much for watching! 😊

    I think this will look amazing as siding! Cannot wait to see it in person. ❤

      Thank you! We think so, too. We are also excited to see how it will look after it's up and stained. 😄

      Thank you, Adam! Greg likes all of them - Beth has a little hesitation 😁. In the end we will grade and match them out for siding and other projects.

    Good days work sir. Almost 20 lineal feet of tall wall siding from 1 log. Yes those big logs are some work! Be well and stay safe.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you, Todd! Those big logs are energy and time eaters but when you put the boards in the stack- sure adds up fast! 😁

    Awesome! Maybe too nice for Exterior. We love the ceiling we did in Blue Stain T&G. Since the Blue Fades in the sun, Interior may be deserving as a thought.

    Good morning, I think the electronic cut thickness device would be more accurate with a magnetic position reader on one column like a lathe or a milling machine.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Always weighing accuracy and speed - always welcome accuracy but this is still rough cut lumber. If we are within a 1/16th - we’re happy. 😁

  • @littlegriffoffgridalberta6837
    @littlegriffoffgridalberta6837 Před 4 měsíci +2

    Lumber looks awesome ! Lot of boards out of on that big " I see you use a lot of water has it thrown a blade , That pine mush be a lot more pitch than the green spruce I'm cutting, I have only used 8 gallons in 92hrs , Just a drip & i have no pitch build up at all on the blade or belts,

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thank you! I try to balance the pitch buildup vs water. Ponderosa is pitchier than Doug fir and lodge pole is worse than either of those.
      I haven’t had a problem with throwing blades. I had problems when I first started from to much build up on the blades and belts but none since I turned the flow up. Thanks for watching! 😁

    • @littlegriffoffgridalberta6837

      @@ourdreaminthewoods Yes it's just learning as we go :) Every tree is different for sure we just learn what works for us , I had watched a video a while back & a guy had been learning kinda new at it & was throwing blades he showed the video & many told him to much water i think he even talk to woodland mills , He cut way back & it run fine after, But I've seen others with that pine & it's bad for pitch, Keep up the good milling we will see that barn go up :)

    Why is it that when you filliting that you do not leave any gaps between the layers😓😓 for download any airflow

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi, John- That’s a good question.
      When I started stacking 1” material I left a gap. But then I was told by a local sawyer that on 1” and less that I didn’t need to leave a gap. So I stopped. Might be a mistake- time will tell. 😁

    I see that camera mount sucks, won't stay in place. Is the speed of the head lift an issue?

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi, Justin, the camera mount could use some improvement. I have it cranked tight but it doesn’t want to stay put.
      Even with the slower lift - I think that I am sawing logs faster. I didn’t use a tape measure at all (butt end) or my 1” jig. Thanks for watching! 😁
