  • In this video, Greg mills two big butts of logs and gets a great slab out of it, so great, Beth wants to keep it for a project! He also comes up with an idea to help support the hoist that he's been thinking about - this piece seems like it is the perfect size. He also mills the 100th timber on the cut list and it sure feels good to see this progress...oh, and yeah, the Ripper 37 IS very sharp - it sawed off a log stop!
    Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab this summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    There's a lot of milling in this video and that usually means a lot going on! Excited about the 100th timber, not excited about sawing a piece of the log stop off! Lesson learned, I think. Hope you enjoy this video! 😁

    Howdy Gregg- congratulations on sawing 100 timbers! That’s a lot of sawing. I think everyone has or will hit a log shop and I’m guilty lol. That was an unusual timber you cut for the support post for the winch. It should be strong enough. Take care out there. God bless y’all

    Good job on reaching number 100. You have gotten really good at centering the pith. I'm not convinced on the quarter turn method, but give it a couple more tries. Maybe on a smaller log it will work better?? I always say that you should be willing to try things that you don't think will work, sometimes you are wrong and they do work.
    Thanks for bringing us along

      Thank you, Mike! Maybe on a smaller log?? Worth trying anyway. Those big logs are hardr and time consuming no matter how you cut them.
      Erik has made me better at centering the pith - takes a bit of time, but accurate. Thanks for watching! 😊

    That 1/4 turn method means you have to cut through the bark 3x. It's the bark on the side opposite the log stops that does the damage to the blade. So, 1/4 turn your blade isn't going to last as long.
    The other problem is that the 90 deg turns, you have 1 more chance to get the log out of square.
    I did it a couple of times on my mill and then stopped.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 5 měsíci +2

      That’s a good point about cutting through the bark. I’m definitely not a fan but it was worth a try. Thanks for your insight and for watching! 😄

    Couple years ago me and my son got tired of trying to turn big logs. So in my saw building I put up a oak 6x6x14' with bow side up from where your jib-crane is to a steel hanger where you over-beam is, then made a square steel sleeve with winch mount to fit over the 6x6, run battery cables back to the post to a battery on a shelf. The only problem was when saw-head is all way up, 4" of saw-gauge hit the beam, so had to shorten that....
    On a couple big logs while turning I could see that oak 6x6 flex and when the log flipped around it shook the whole building, so I dont think I'd trust a soft wood 6x6......

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Hi, it's a little hard for me to picture your setup, but there is a lot of force lifting those big logs.
      So far with the lift set up that I have - you can see some flex in the metal arm, but it doesn't seem to have any impact on the building. The funky post is more of a spacer more than anything. Thanks for watching! 😁
