  • In this video, Greg does a little Spring clean up with Erik - there's a burn pile, they cut down a few trees, Greg falls (see if you catch it) and he mills a huge ponderosa pine log that took forever on the sawmill...Greg thinks, maybe 7 hours! This includes the edging and the clean up of the log, but that's A LOT of time on ONE log. It did produce a lot of board and batten, but, wow. Have you ever spent that much time on one log?
    Did you know we are building a barn out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer and are on a pause while we mill all of the lumber needed for the barn build. We have A LOT of milling in our future.
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns!
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    Looks like it was worth the challenge. That’s a lot of material from one log!

      The log took up so much time! But, happy to get some great board and batten. 😁

    Your right about the board giving more pressure and thereby more stability,great job,enjoying the videos

    Thank you for answering my questions about the 4x4s. Makes sense. Wow that’s a big log!

      Of course! Yes, we have some big log sections from a huge ponderosa pine we took down last year. Thanks for watching! 😁

    At the end of the video, Greg talks about how many times he scrapes the sawdust off of the lumber and log... Beth counted (as best she could 😅) and she counted 152ish times! That's crazy! But, while Beth was counting, she also tried her best to count how many times Greg empties the orange sawdust bucket and she counted 18ish. That's A LOT of sawdust! Probably not perfect counts because it is from a time lapse, but pretty close!
    Hope you enjoy watching! Let us know what you think. 😊

      Greetings - I enjoy your videos. I keep my Iphone in my pocket as I work around our HM130MAX setup. I'm basically the Pusher and Saw head programmer. (EpicSaw Lift) even with my doing board removal and stacking I some days get 15,000 steps which come out to 5 miles. I have learned so much from your projects and milling strategy. Thanks.

      We are trying out something similar to EpicSaw lift in our current video. Really cool technology!
      I should definitely check out my steps because my iPhone is in my pocket, too. Thanks for that reminder! 🤣

      Yep, mold. A lot of extra time, but worth it to avoid the mold. Thanks for watching! 😁

    Howdy y’all- I sure agree with you about sawing the big logs. They are definitely time consuming with a manual mill. That log produced a lot of lumber. It had right hand grain in it which is supposed to be fairly stable. Left hand grain will unwind on ya. It’s over my comprehension lol. Did y’all get any of the snow the other day? Hope you have a great weekend. God bless

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Hi, Paul! It was a huge pile of boards - good looking stuff. I’m with you not understanding why right hand turn is more stable than left- above my head. No snow from the last storm but lots of rain. Thanks for watching and take care! 😊

  • @waderue
    @waderue Před 5 měsíci +5

    well here is the deal I have watched all winter you cut lumber, so when are you going to build? I can say if you are going to do timber frame you need to start the notching of all 4x4 and 4x6 and all that to go together so stand them up and connect them

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 5 měsíci +3

      Hi, Wade! We have had a lot of timbers to mill this winter to get ready for our build. You are right, we need to prepare, but we are building a traditional barn with mechanical joints, so no notching. 😁
      The plan is to start building June 1. 🙏🏻

  • @hpw59

    huge log.....I don't know if this would be worth the extra effort. The first cuts that still have bark on them, level from the pith and mark the end of the log so when you cut the bark off you can still keep the pith centered. Which that would mean you could only cut one side one at a time to keep the pith centered when cutting bark/wane off. That would keep pith centered vertically and horizontally...clear as mud??
    .
    maybe a electric leaf blower to help with sawdust removal. I believe that is what MIke Morgan does. I have my air hose from my compressor for getting majority of saw dust off.

      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Hi, I read your comment a few times and couldn’t come up with what you were talking about. Sorry 😁
      I could try my leaf blower- might do a fair job. It seems to have moisture in it that makes it a bit sticky. Thanks for watching! 😄

    Gonna make some great siding !! I would say cleaning off the dust is a worth while venture you've got a boat of load of time invested in each board might as well keep mold free..thanks a million for another great video look forward to the next
