- In this video, Greg shares how he prepared and has been preparing for months to get ready to build our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge. He has made things (sawhorses), purchased the tools/necessities from companies, Facebook Marketplace, ebay and from people he heard about from friends. The brackets we need for the build are HEAVY and we could not justify the shipping cost having them made anywhere but locally. We are very happy with them and Greg even has another project he's thinking about having made.
Beth definitely questioned buying a used planer from Japan, but Greg knew someone else that did it (and heard it was the thing to do for the best price) and it worked out, so we did it and it was a great experience and we are happy with the planer.
Overall, we need all of the items Greg shares in this video and there's something about feeling READY for a build and not scrambling to buy everything you need right before it starts. It just makes the process go a little more smoothly.

We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.

***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!

Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"

not wide enough at the base. They will be tippy if you try to slide anything on them .
@@bobstewart8584 Hi, Bob- After using the sawhorses- you are right. But hindsight at this point- just have to work around them being tippy. 😁
PPE, if you don't have it already. Hard hats, safety toe boots, gloves and glasses.
You might have been a Boy Scout and took that "BE PREPARED" motto to heart.

Howdy y’all- you can never have too many toys- l mean tools, but I think you have a few more than is legal lol. Freud makes a blade for those beam saws that are made sixty tooth. I thought about getting one for my big Skill. To be honest I’m a little bit jealous of your big planer. I’m working out some twelve inch oak that I could have used one on. If you come across on a good deal on a chain morticer you might grab it. So looking forward to seeing y’all cut the bents out. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. God bless
Hi, Paul- I’ll keep the 60 tooth in mind next time I need to change it out.
That big planer is a beast. We have been working it over and it’s a workout. Making 2-3 passes and getting about 90% of the saw marks out. They sure look nice after a couple of passes.
I would like to eventually learn how to do some traditional mortise and tenon framing and the chain morticer would be a must have. I feel like I am cheating compared to your craftsmanship - no mortise and tenon joints on this build. 😊

Looking good. Really nice on the brackets and plates. When I first saw them, I thought you had them painted, but no, powdercoat. 1st class. What are you going to use to drive the screws in? An impact wrench instead of an impact driver might be necessary. Extra drill bits for drilling through the beams and trying to line up the holes from both sides. Good idea on the extra saw horses. I like to make mine 17°. I think they are a little more stable with the wider foot print. But they do take up extra room. I like the tool carts with 1 or 2 drawers. Gives a place to keep smaller items so the big tools aren't laying on top of little things. Magnetic parts holders help to keep screws, nuts, bolts, washers, etc. separated and keep them from getting all mixed together when rolling a cart around. A wood shaping disc for an angle grinder will make short work of the bevels to let the posts fit down where the brackets were welded. Some long ratchet straps to pull timbers together to get a nice tight fit. The first bent will tell you what you might have missed. To get all of the angle braces in at the same height, you can measure down and screw in a stop board. Once the angle brace is in place, you can just unscrew it and use it on the next spot. Easier than trying to hold it in place when it is loose on both ends.

I have an impact wrench for the wedge bolts but I could see it coming in handy for the timber screws. We are doing some pre drilling as well. Ended up getting some 12” screws.
I put on my first T-bracket last night. Not an easy task to get all those holes to line up.
Good idea on the grinder to make the bevels.
Copy on the long ratchet straps!
Definitely will use a stop board on the angle braces for the sides.
Trying to come up with processes that are repeatable and accurate. Making templates, have one person (for the most part) do the same job so the end product is consistent.

@@ourdreaminthewoods One rule that I have, is to do an area/part/joint that is not visible (or at least not as visible) first to learn on. That way the mistakes aren't front and center. Good luck

Most of those sawhorses tweaked in the sun and now are a little wobbly. But once you put some weight on them they are solid. Seems like they are maintaining the same height though. 😁

I wish I could be there to help because I would porta cable drill and driver and we will at the end of day witch one is still running because I am trained carpenter and you will never see dewalt in my bag and there is lot guys who because they are cheap and east to find but for those who know we buy porta cable and never let me down
Hi, Wade- Once you take the step with dewalt batteries- they have you right where they want you.
I am far from a professional carpenter or builder. 🤣
Those are super strong brackets and gussets really fail proof for your intended use. I like powder coating, however give me Alwgrip or Imron paints, even primed and single stage automotive paints will last decades indoors any day versus powder coat. These finish coatings do not chip, delaminate with time, finish can be touched up, any color can be matched, much lower cost, longer lasting/durabality, no need to sand blast for prep. Can Boeing Airbus Gulfstream Kenworth Mack Peterbuilt Bertram Hatteras Caterpillar Case and many more all be wrong with preferred coating/paint choice? Alwgrip and Imron are proven tough finish coatings used commonly in the most extreme environments. You could have saved big and had a more durable finish you could apply DIY. Ask subscribers for advice/suggestions for processes in future only cost to you is time needed to receive and review suggestions? Ray Stormont
