  • In this bonus episode I'll be taking a look at a bunch of different monster miniatures that might be of interest if you're thinking of starting collecting miniatures for use in your games.
    Note that I'm not affiliated with Reaper Miniatures in any way - I'm just using their models as an example of the kind of thing that you can get without breaking the bank.

    One can also get a decent amount of „giant spider“ minis for little money when shopping for Halloween decorations. Put them on a base, apply a quick paint job and voilá! Dozens of spider minis for small money, ready to swarm your player characters!

      No problem :) (though the price of a lot of models seems to have gone up a bit since I posted this :( ).
      If you've also seen my 'sprue' video (which is looks like you have), and if you are in the UK, then another good online source for picking up sprues is 'the sprue shop' (I'm not affiliated in anyway, but I have used them in the past without any issues :) ).

    I know it exceeds the budget of 20 pounds, but my favorite way to get a lot of models for my money is board games. Particularly the D&D adventure board games. Not sure what it is in pounds, but where I'm at in US they can be found for around 40 to 50 dollars. Lots of bang for the buck as there is around 40 models, but also lots of extras that can always be useful. I recently found some copies of Descent Journeys in the Dark 2nd E and 1 E for only about 40 to 45 dollars on Ebay. That is also another one I like for lots of minis and other stuff that can be handy to use. Most of my minis came from the various board games I've picked up over the years. I also don't mind buying another copy or two of ones I have. Especi8ally if they can be found on the cheap. I've gotten some of the ones I have for less than 40.

    • @CrookedStaffTerrain
      @CrookedStaffTerrain  Před rokem

      Yeah - that's certainly an option to get a bunch of mini's all at once (I'm actually quite tempted to pick one of the boardgames up myself - just to give it a try). Though you are stuck with what comes in the box (rather than being able to choose exactly what you want/need) - but I expect that's not gonna be much of a problem (as folks would probably just pick the box with the theme they most like).

    • @dmdc5719
      @dmdc5719 Před rokem +1

      @@CrookedStaffTerrain yeah that is true. For the D&D Boardgames I think "The Legend of Drizzt" is one of the more popular ones. It is one of my faves anyway. But the others are good too. I have noticed that a lot of DMs pick themes for their various encounters and such. So that would definitely be a way to go. Pick a theme you want to run and get what matches that theme. The D&D board games I think are some of the best options. You get a lot of bang for the buck. They use a lot of molds from thier past lines of minis and those painted ones are really high priced in the after market. The dragon from "Wrath of Ashardalon" for example is from one of the previous lines and that mini alone I've seen go for not less than $50 USD! You can get a whole game for that lol. That Balor from the Drizzt one last I saw was around $70 USD! But picking the models you want/need is definitely a great way to go and start out too. Lately I've been looking at 3D printed models from Etsy. Pretty good price (depending on which Etsy store you go to), and the models are pretty solild. I have gotten several from there. Particularly Gnolls which I think are tough to find these days.

      @@dmdc5719 Yeah, my brother was recently showing me some Halo mini's he picked up from Etsy - and they looked pretty good.

    i do like miniatures, but they take so much space... and also usually is hard to just have what you exactly want to represent when using them, unless you have a big collection. also, you do also need to paint them, i have done my fair share of painting from 40k in my time, and is cool, but it also requires a good time investment and another collection of paints and other materials if you want a good finish.
    my take on it now is using printed 2d ones using images from google and the like. usually with a white background, and maybe a couple changes on my part. i print them from both sides. they do the trick quite well and they hardly take any space. also is usually easy to print around 17 of them in a single A4, so is easy to get good numbers of them if you need them (usually you dont need more than 5 of any mini in my opinion)

    I am far from a new to mini's person so originally was going to skip this video but glad I didn't. Christmas is coming up and my daughter is new to miniature painting and being a game master. This video inspired me to gather a beginners set of mini's together, using your ideas as an inspiration. Unfortunately some of your suggestions are sold out so had to get equivalents from their Dungeon Dwellers range.

      I'm actually going to be using mine as part of a traveling DM's kit for when I'm gaming away from home - or to loan to the DM if I'm not running the game myself (though I have added a few more to this little 'starter set' since the video was released - just to fill out the small box I'll be using).
      Anyway, I hope your daughter has fun with the models you've got for her :) (always to good to hear that new/younger folks are getting into tabletop gaming :) ).

    My advice, there are only two choices. Cheap as hell, or all in. I suggest printing out tokens to be cheap. They ARE flat. But can be colourful, and can be crammed in a bag safely. Either that, or locate a brand that can be bulk friendly. I can suggest Alliance. They do 72nd scale minis. Everything. Fantasy, real world Napoleonics, Ancients. Dirt cheap, sold in sets that are quantity friendly. Plastic. Normally aimed at the table top market. I get my models from Ukraine. They are amazing at delivering considering the current circumstances.

  • @AdamBragg
    @AdamBragg Před rokem +3

    A decent starting set. It's as valid as what I've seen other youtubers propose. I'd personally suggest a few generic bandit type figures which could stand in for roadside bandits, pirates, city guards, alleyway cutpurses, rival adventurers, etc. but it depends on how likely you are to feature encounters located in areas of civilization rather than dungeons or wilderness.
    As for how does this video compare with your other ones, it's kinda "meh" really. Perhaps a GM just starting out may get more mileage from it, but it's so basic as to be not terribly captivating. I only watched through to the end to see if you suggested anything new or different. I predict this will be one of your lesser watched videos of your library of uploads. Not a "bad video" per se, but ultimately not the reason why people come to your channel.

    • @CrookedStaffTerrain
      @CrookedStaffTerrain  Před rokem +4

      Actual human bandit/npc types would be a good addition I think.
      As the for video itself - it's a bit strange, but the mini's related videos tend do a better than my regular stuff (maybe they pull in more un-subscibed viewers or something - I don't really know :) ). But that's not why I do them (chasing the algorithm isn't really my thing :) ).
      But it is a question that I've been asked several times now (and have seen similar questions in other places) - so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring :D (even if I did sound like 'captain obvious' at times - lol).

      @@CrookedStaffTerrain In that case, full speed ahead, my friend. Why not do a video on how to make cheap D&D minis using Pound Shop purchases?
