    Thanks for being one of the few people to cover this in an honest and non-cryptic way using the tools already availble in the program. Thanks for not try to shill me on third party apps and programs. I finally managed to do a half decent edit of my Lumix VLOG footage!

    This video describes a good sense workflow to set color profile, white balance, and color correction and grading of photos or videos, add to that a product comparison all in one cool 28-minute video. I am keeping this as reference. I wish the next Lightroom user interface would be like that. I like very much.

    The checker 24 is a standard 24 for camera correction and are for creating dng profiles. The passport is a video checker. They are for 2 different things.

      @@kwinzman I'm no expert on the why. But the colours on the checker are the standard DNG set they call it. Which is a photo workflow. Whereas the video ones have gels for video scopes.

      Because they picked different colors for the references the colorchecker is for print cmyk and standard hsl sliders the passport is for color matching a vectroscope.

    great video full of info, maybe give it a shot to use davinci so you don't have to play so much with adjustment layers and stuff. there are also options there to automatically select a grid for your color chekers. might save you tons of steps.

    Hi. As far as I have understood from other sources on the Internet, the spydercheckr 24 shouldn't be aligned to the vectorscope, because the colors are slightly different and intended to be used only for photography. Maybe that's the reason the x-rite colorchecker video didn't need that much aligment of the colors.

      Kind of an old post, but have they fixed this issue? Their Amazon sales page says it's for video as well as photography. Did they release some Davinci Vectorscope update/product update, or is it still primarily for photography? I'm getting conflicting information online.

    Very interesting vidéo. Thanks Peter. If i may, i have one question. The fact that you didn’t have to correct the x-rite as much as the otter one, does this mean that the color samples on the x rite chart are more accurate? And as a consequence the x-rite is a better color checker? Thanks for your advice. Kind regards. Herman(Belgium)

    • @faspete2nd
      @faspete2nd  Před 8 měsíci

      No. As it turns out the Spyderchecker is not used for video color grading. It's used for photo if I remember correctly. I did not know this until after the fact and viewers corrected that in some of the comments.

    This was really good and objective. I guess now months later it would bum you out to change the video's title to Color Checker vs Spyder Checker instead of Checker vs Checker. I blame the companies for competing on product names; it's confusing.
    I was fortunate to get the X-Rite rep at the local photo/video expo to give me a 30 minute one on one with their system, using stills all the way from the SD card onwards to saving a profile for that camera with that lens under those conditions in that city.
    My biggest take away from that X-Rite session was that the software does not, excuse my French, give a crap what we and our eyes are seeing in the way of colour on the monitor. You can do these steps on so-so monitors. Think of it like instrument flying for aircraft. You trust the gauges, (analogous to the waveforms and scopes) not your gut's sense of what's up and down.

    • @faspete2nd
      @faspete2nd  Před 2 lety

      30min with the rep sounds great. After the meeting were you more impressed with the software or less?
      I have no problem changing the name of the video. Honestly I did not even make the connection of the names and the title of the video until you mentioned it. Thanks for the comment.

      @charlieross-BRM Před 2 lety +1

      @@faspete2nd I was more impressed, but that was easy since before that I really had little clue how these things were used; I just knew it was important and saw an opportunity to learn from someone employed by X-Rite to train people all over the place. She traveled a lot on vacation taking her own photos and used some of them through every step. I was the only person who stuck at the booth so I could interject if I wasn't sure. Where I see people going wrong is by having a "yeah but... " attitude that they're seeing something different so they know how it should really look on their home monitor. She was great.

    Hi.
    Great Video,maybe the unique one to compare both color checker chart.
    I have the Spyder 24 Wich is very functional, I am using it to match BMPC4K with GH5,4 in Vlog,in resolve.
    Actually they have an automatic tool to get the colors but somehow it is always off in the red at least by my camera's...and it is better to do it manually.
    My monitor is 4k HDR calibrated with Spyder checker tool.
    I just bought for fun a Chinese cheap copy of xrite classical chart.
    And to my surprise somehow the automatic correction produce better result in the scopes...so I was wondering maybe to buy the original XL xrite vidéo checker Wich is 150 CHF € Dollars around...so it is worth it in your opinion?
    I have already xrite white balance card because it is actually most important to balance before shooting with a good white card and x rite imho has the best?
    Curious what did you think comparing checker 24 with the video xrite xl.
    Any favorites in your opinion.
    I am mostly doing video of classical concert multicam with lot of different camera's codecs différent bit but at least the MFT Panasonic and Blackmagic are easy to match the AH180 pana caméscope 8 bit it is another story...with WB as well
    But actually you made a great video and I was already doing what you are doing in resolve to put my camera in one world...
    Anything thanks in advance for your answer and greatings from Switzerland in middle of the biggest pandemic out brake...worst than last year...well hope where you are it is getting better yours

      I use my colorchecker video card all the time. I use it for white balance, exposure, and color correction. I use the Datacolor SpyderX to calibrate my monitors, but keep the Spyder Checker 24 on the shelf as a prop. I never use it anymore now that I have the large colorchecker video card AND the colorchecker passport. The passport is great to have for the run and gun video shots where you don't have room for the big card. I know the X-rite stuff is expensive, but I think they are worth the money...in my opinion.

    Color science is the first thing I'm looking in with digital funkiness. External temp changes electrical parameters of a video cam sensor.
    So color science will change a lot in the starting seconds of filming, when the cam is reaching it's temp : please use external power in studio like 15 minutes before doing WB.
    About this vid, if you prefer the X-rite colorchecker passport, then maybe you want a new pro monitor with some auto calibration process.
    The final grading (intro frames) almost corresponds the color correction of the Spyderchecker 24....
    So what's the explanation about using only the large X-rite colorchecker video card today (witch is not presented in this video),
    when your grading is what you almost get from scratch with the Spyderchecker 24 ? Must say, your final thought in the comments are confusing given the final grading of this vid.

      A few people have commented that the Spyderchecker is not used with video. So there is that. I do have a monitor calibration tool (datacolor Spider-X) that I use, but I am not a professional. I'm just a guy making basic CZcams videos based on my experiences with the equipment I have and sharing my journey with that equipment. I'm not sure what you mean about the confusing comments at the end of the video.

      @@faspete2nd Hello didn't say that friend. Said for x unexplained reasons you choose X-rite when in final grading you're like sticking to ur Spyderchecker color corrections. So you could do a video about your buyer's mindset, for X-rite given it seems you went from your original preferences to some other parameters. Would be interesting bc some say the Spyderchecker doesn't respect the Rc709 colors for video. So did you have that in mind ?

    However Yes presentation is important , especially with 4 k wildlife / nature .
    Have watched so many videos on this subject and now just plain confused as everyone seems to give different values to the sat and mid grey etc
    A point of interest is if the x-rite/calibrite basic 6 chromatic colour swatches are 50% sat then should not also the hue vs sat be brought up until each swatch reaches 50% not just hue vs hue ?
    And is this a rec 709 or sRGB gamut ? legal or Full ?
    Good presentaion .
