PERFECT colour every single time | The Datacolor Spyder Checkr is a Game Changer

  • We talk about color and white balance ALL THE TIME and it’s obvious why - colour, after focus, is the most likely thing photographers get wrong when they’re still learning. Datacolor kindly sent us over a Spyder Checkr to test and review and here is what we thought.
    🔗🛒 Grab one, or just have a look: geni.us/perfec...
    We ALWAYS tell anyone who wants to run a brand partnership with us that if we would keep and use the product long term then we’ll create a video with it. If we wouldn’t - either because we don’t like it or it doesn’t do what it says it does - then we’ll send it back and end the partnership.
    This is important to me because I don’t want to be suggesting things that are crap and also, I’m a terrible liar. Like, really bad. So if I do say “This is freaking amazing” then it actually is.
    And this is.

    Hey there, long time lurker with a tip here.
    I hate having to restart lightroom each time - so what I ended up doing was:
    1. Create a folder that's easily accessible.
    2. Change Spyderchkr preferences to deposit lightroom/acr presets into said folder.
    3. After creating the profile, I use the Import Preset in develop module to easily and quickly navigate to the folder containing my new calibration
    4. $$$

    It's worth the effort to place this in your photo for every different lighting condition. Better than waisting time in post. Excellent video. I really like the case for the color checker.

    Awesome to sum it up. In Australia there was an offer to buy the SpyderX Pro and the 24 Checker as a package. I've seen you use that before so I took the plunge and glad I did. I use two monitors and had the problem the colour was different on them. After using the Spyder gadget they're virtually identical. I used the 24 Swatch version and on a few pictures yesterday and the result was amazing. I didn't get the case you use - but that may come with the 48 version. I've just got a double sided card, but that's cool and workable. Just proves you do know what you're talking about LOL .....as if there was any doubt! Awesome Jess simply awesome and Thank You

    I use it a lot when shooting video. I'm able to achieve consistency between shots without it when shooting photos, but I'll include it in my workflow for my next shoot.
    It might save time in the end while achieving better results overal.

    I had the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport but it's a bit old and seeing as I use the Datacolor Spyder X for calibration, I thought after watching this review I would order one from B&H. It arrived today and I realized I ordered the wrong one, I got the small passport version. I particularly wanted the tripod feature. Oh well try again wearing my glasses :)

    I'm a wedding/event/portrait photographer, let's say i want to use this in a church with light bulbs where few are yellow, few are white and on top of that i use flash, how on earth would i use this? i want to use it, but different light sources, and also towards the altar is maybe different than towards the exit? please answer so i don't spend my money and get disappointed :) i really want to solve the horrible colors that i get on so many occasions but is it really possible? great explanation btw :) but i'm unable to find any videos on my scenarios, thank you in advance!

    Definitely picking this up!! What a nifty little tool! 😍😍
    Quick question, when we but presets online, say etsy, and we download the file and load it into lightroom. Do we just do that or do we uncheck the whitebalance of the preset so it doesn’t mess with the raw photo’s color? Or does that not matter if we have this color pallet tool? What if we don’t have the color pallet yet and want to use a preset we bought for the time being? Hope that makes sense haha! Thank u!

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Před 2 lety +1

      It really is a great tool 👌 and absolutely, that makes sense however most presets don’t effect white balance so I think that should help 😊

  • @btpaulen

    Got the small one.. would you do another check if the light conditions changed? Like if the sun came through or you move location. I also find it a bit awkward when balancing flash with ambient light.

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Před rokem +2

      If the light conditions change significantly enough for you to question it then I would do another check. You may find when you come to processing your work that the extra check was not needed and this will allow you to get a better feel on when to re-check. But for the sake of an extra minute to get the checkr out and use it, that is better than the frustration caused later on when you are like "I wish I had just re-checked, I knew the light had changed". 🙂

  • @cindymayes6105
    @cindymayes6105 Před rokem

    The 24 color one doesn’t come with a case however
    I’ve just received an email from data color that they have a new smaller one called Spyder Checkr Photo but it’s only about 5 x 4 inches with a case versus 8 x 6 for the 48 color with case that Jess has. My question to Jessica is the 5 x 4 too small? It’s a lot cheaper than the 48 one with case hence why I’m asking….
    Thx so much. 🙂

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately we didn’t know a smaller version with a case was being released. It will be absolutely perfect for many people, just make sure it is a good size within the frame when capturing it 😊

      @@ThatPhotographySpot Also with the Calibrate Color Checker Passport, once an new icc profile is created it is automatically stored in the 'Profile' section of ACR or Lightroom, unlike Spyder Checkr Photo where newly created profiles are stored in the 'Preset' section. Are they doing the same thing? I thought preset is for colour grading and some effect but not icc profile. Can you explain?
