- I have never touched Ubiquiti gear until I got hold of this box of random goodies.
There will be other more in depth videos once I get my head around it all and dig deeper. - Věda a technologie
I come here to learn Australian. "That's gone tits up" is my new favorite phrase.
We said that all the time in the US Navy. NTTS. Nipples to the sky. 😄
But did we remember the password?
His reactions are priceless to the Unifi stuff. Wish he'd been doing these all along the growth paths for this gear. "gives me the shits" and "gone tits up" made me LOL on the start of the hellish corporate work week.
Fair criticism of all the gear. Glad to see someone looking deeper than my lazy ass would do. I just like how simple it is. Although my family would disagree with all the tinkering I’ve put them through with my unifi gear.
The devices peform their "im here! Adopt me" dance by performing a dns lookup for "unifi". They then send out a hearbeat/ im here, to the inform http (not https) port of 8080 with the result of the "unifi" lookup.
Once they have been adopted, they will use the controllers address to phone home.
The whole unifi ecosystem used to be really good but has since been dumbed right down so any electrician can install. Its turning into a one click solution. Good luck with ipv6.....
Cant really agree with "dumbed down" being anything bad. Its really the future of networking, as in 98% could be done in a readable GUI.
Its consumer grade stuff, smb at most.
The 4+ years I've had my Dream Machine Pro have been flawless, I'm going to upgrade my old AC-Pro access points to their new U7 's and finally upgrade my G3 cameras to the G5 Range, I recommend Ubiquiti to all of my friends and family
I hate the "appleniss" of ubiquity stuff but i still run all the unifi gear home and at work. Easy to link sites. Setup vlans for the kids, iot, servers grannyflat. One AP can pose as 8 wifi stations. Poe switches for raspberry pi's etc. mine are setup to update themselves every night and i haven't had a problem in 7 years
I bought my first Ubiquiti AP last month. You can selfhost the Unifi controller with docker too. Not bad kit.
I installed UniFi controller on a Linux box, but my G4 Instant doesn't see it.
The best unifi review ever !11111
Nice video, cannot wait for the next part ;)
Nice Video , You had me going for a bit there because i thought you were going over to Unifi and i was thinking " Unifi is ok but quickly , very quickly you start to see its limitations" but as you said it does have its place , that said their A.P's are very very good
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I left Unifi 2 several years ago when an update crashed my network and the system and devices require a controller. It appears the Unifi OS has mature a lot of it still a controller.
I already have all my Ubiquiti needs fulfilled, just here for the cursing.
I'm glad my suffering amuses you!
@@TallPaulTech Hi from NZ. As soon as I saw that password creation entry, I thought here we go. This will be good! I wasn't disappointed. They love to keep their PW requirements a secret until you enter one, then they smack your bottom for being a bad little boy and not reading their mind.
Great video as always, thanks.
Our current home system has been a Dream Machine Pro with Ubiquiti access points and cameras and its been fantastic. I currently dual wan connect Starlink and NBN fixed wireless with it as well which has been pretty slick. I have used virtual firewalls with pfsense, sophos UTM and am also familiar with Palo Alto, CiscoASA and others and this for a power user or small/medium business environment is fantastic. Look a bit deeper too, as someone that's also familiar with using linux and having a lower level access its pretty good when you get into it for us too.
Was waiting for this day to come and get your opinion on UniFi Paul. Looking forward to the next vid !
Love the packet the capture... brings back memories from many moons ago, well before devices would 'call home' for no reason.... different world now.
If the Ubiquiti gear ain’t your cup of tea... interested to talk $$$ exchange once you’re done experimenting.
Chinese govt just received a wireshark tap warning. Target is described as a shocked looking shirtless haxor
Well, I like Ubiquiti but it is not everyone's cup of tea. I was going to say I wish that equipment would fall into my lap, but I don't think I could make use of much other than those access points. I would have fun playing with it though. There are reasons why it works the way it does out of the box (like not letting you choose "password" as a password) but is nicely configurable if you want to work under the hood. Would be great to see a video on what you make of it all.
I had a bit more of a look than what I showed in this video, and it seems like a pretty good all in one package. I'm surprise I haven't come across this sooner.
LOL at the password section.
Mate, it gives me the shits
It's even more amusing since the portal does not even try to offer tls.
Awesome comedy bit. Thanks for sharing.
It's not supposed to be comedy... maybe you're just laughing at me getting the shits with things!
your content is hilarious, in a good way. I love learning things through accidental comedy@@TallPaulTech
@@TallPaulTechnow is that comment meant to be funny? Coz it sounds funny…. You’re like Seinfeld when he thinks he’s not funny, and tries not to be funny, but actually is 😂
You've got some good kit there. I run the Ubiquiti WAPs which have been pretty reliable. The controller software is clever and allows the same SSiDs across multiple WAPs. There's a lot of hype around their switches and they seem decent, however it does look like the intended audience is wizard driven. It would be interesting to see if you can do command line configs like Cisco and HP gear. I run my Ubiquiti units with Cisco switches and the Windows controller software (which is java!!).
Never used Ubiquiti stuff myself, but there are a couple of channels on CZcams that have mentioned using them (Jeff Geerling / The HookUp) and like you said, it seems to need the Dream Machine and be an all in one management platform for your LAN, access points, cameras (with DVR functionality) and all that.
Nice to see one up close and get a better idea of what it's like as a platform - I'm privacy focused like you so, don't need pics of me with my shirt off on the interwebs ;)
Based on what I saw I'll be steering clear.
Thanks for the heads-up
Unless you build your own setup yourself, you might as well assume that any vendor is calling home these days.
I’m looking forward to you diving into the “unifi” ecosystem and in particular their WiFi “tune ability” from your professional / expert WiFi knowledge and experience with the larger enterprise tested brands like Aruba and Cisco. Actual enterprise level providers
The thing it, I won't be able to compare it in a multiple AP type deployment that I'm used to (to test roaming, etc). At first glance though it seems tunable. You can disable low bitrates (generally) which is good.
I know you’re new to Ubiquiti but RTFM man!
CZcams is so pathetic... it removes my comments. I replied with something like, yeah I'll RTFM right after I'm finished sucking this...
😂
I agree with the sentiments around companies like that say they care about privacy often aren't, the heavy cloud based management tilt their product has doesn't sit well with me either.
What's your thoughts on Mikrotik gear, they seem to have some fairly good value for money kit as well, however are still closed source, but ultimately I think it's fairly hard to beat the SoC performance per watt of ARM chips as opposed to full x86 CPU running Linux for routing?
I wonder about MikroTik too, I have used them for years, now I want a wiretap to know what they have been shipping off to the cloud all these years...
I quite like the ubiquiti gear. It's got my house sorted and is a big step up from all the standard home garbage. The mesh roaming works really bloody well and the external wifi access point gives good range. The roaming is better than the shit Cisco setup they have at Monash - but that'll be Monash just not knowing how to configure shit properly.
As I was reading that, I thought most of the time it's bad setups that cripple the systems, then you wrote that too.
What was the domain or filter on the pihole blocklist that blocked the connection?
"Here's a box of stuff which full off a ute." As they say in Monty Python, "you lucky, lucky bastard!".
That's not what I said
Question to the group... If I have a UniFi controller running on Linux, and I want to get my G4 Instant running. Can I just get the CloudKey+, connect it to my local controller, connect the G4 to the CloudKey and be done with it, or is there more?
you ever heard of google?
@@harrisonb006 Thank you for your CZcams grade comment. Of course I've googled it, and looked at Ubiquity's site and I wasn't finding an answer, so I asked for advice on a video specifically about this. Crazy, right?
it had a show video button at 7:33!
what do you use as Firewall at home?
A Linux box with nftables
So the shirtless footage won’t be appearing on websites under your pseudonym “Dream Machine” 🤣? Keep up the good work - looking forward to the next instalment.
You got me... that's my only fans handle
pS Trace is phone home for people using the cloud console
Omg-cool upload!bye. Tall-=))
I wish I could justify the price of this stuff for my homelab. But if I spend this much in network only, I wont have any budget left for the actual servers. I am in the market for a 2.5Gbps switch, but I need 16 ports minimum, which does not seem to be easy to find on a budget...
You connect the UDM first dude, then add the devices , much easier.
I'm pretty sure all those boxes have pull tabs, meaning you don't need the blade!
some of us keep the cutter on us at all times
how much does it cost for the whole package?
Someone else is gonna have to answer that!
probably more than whatever building you're putting it in
Vendor sponsored kit? Ubnt kit is good for most part but camera are vendor lock-in and not worth touching.
Vendor lock in is not good at all. Open standards are better for inter-operability too.
yeah, at least they do support Home Assistant integration so that kinda acts as your "bridge" between Ubiquiti and other stuff. Still not ideal and some data it doesn't give to home assistant.
It's all cloud based management. Haha
I'm pretty sure the Dream Machine can locally manage the devices with no internet (after initial setup). That's what the "network" software running on it should do. It backs up configs to the cloud by default, but you can disable that feature.
Slightly better than Meraki's business model, but still gives me "own nothing" vibes.
It doesn't have to be, I have my controller locally on a Linux VM.
The internet requirement is a pain, but yes - all local thereafter! There's a method to bypass that step too via SSH - but haven't needed to explore that just yet :-)
thought you were aruba fan
Good job TP, I was worried you had been 'sponsored' by Ubiquiti. Give em hell mate. After the last data breach in 2021 I sold all my gear and closed my account
Lol did you actually look into that data breach of 2021 it was sweet fa i would be more worried about the recent one this year where other users could see your cloud controller but to be fair they did notify everyone and do the right thing straight away
I'm waiting for the G4 Instant camera to get connected. I bought one and can't get it to do anything. I think it requires a UniFi console, which I didn't know before I bought it. I'm hoping I can use the camera without dropping another $100+
You need a CloudKey+
@@AfifAhmad will I also need the $30/month UniFi hosting?
No it's self hosted
Just hate it when you follow the password rules and the computer says "na"😂
Or when it displays no rules until you enter your first attempt, then out of nowhere, a list of rules appear. I have to calm myself down so I don't throw the monitor through the window
Exactly
It is a linux box...
Congratulations on getting the apple of the network world.. i love my ubiquiti gear 😂
Yeah look respectfully. I don’t think you ubiquity equipment is for a bloke like you
however you can access to most of the devices because they are a wee Linux machine but they pro-sumer level if your life was driving a mouse and a windows machine😂
Ubiquiti do make some good gear, most of my network and all of my cameras are Unifi.
Sounds like you hit the jackpot on some expensive gear (That G5 Pro is crazy expensive), I use their cameras at home primarily for the fact that they're an American company that manufacturers their stuff in Vietnam and I actually need to view them remotely sometimes.
Unlike you I can't be bothered going detective sniffing through packets sent from those chinese state owned CCTV companies like hikkyvision and blocking web access. Rather the CIA watch my house instead of the Chinese in my case.
still confused why you need to do a packet capture on a device you are doing a setup video about. Fail.
Yes, indeed you failed.
@@TallPaulTech I didnt make a video with unnecessary steps. so now you failed again.
TIGMTFS - I shall put that in my code somewhere.
