      yeah. they flew 10 hours to tokyo, changed planes and flew ten more hours to saipan. for a world cup that was in japan. utter madness. you know the japanese would have rolled out absolute world class training facilities somewhere in the japanese countryside. but mick had a friend in saipan...

      I was born and raised on Saipan. Nothing but chill vibes, nice people, beautiful beaches, bbq every weekends and beautiful stars at night. You all should visit Saipan one day, you won’t regret it!

    If mick mc carthy had of been cuter he would have left Roy join the squad later. Mick wanted to equalise him. He wasn't equal, he was an odd ball captain. But ultimately what was good for Roy was good for us.

    Ireland drew with Germany, progressed to the last 16 and were eliminated on penalties by a good Spain side. The 2002 tournament was hardly a disaster for them.

I am trying to think from the players perspective with Keane having a Temper tantrum over ham sandwiches and dry-cleaning. Sure the real culprits Are the FAI, we know that but to take it out on the players or Mick was madness.

    Yeah here's the truth,two big characters clashed ,first being Roy who clashed with most as he wouldn't accept mediocrity (winners just cant)and second mick who wouldn't or couldn't back down in front of the team and the rest is history.

      Crying and moaning and when one man stands up and speaks up the cowards wont back him up .
      Ive had it in jobs and its exactly what happend they went to their captin with their disgused at the conditions and treatment and roy been the captain
      Went forward and when hes turned to the players whi put him uo to it they were all to be found looling at the floor silent and walking away .
      If i was roy i woukdnt soeak to the entire line uo of sipan

    Arguably one of the best players not to play in a World Cup, sounded more like a holiday to be fair, one player done his ankle ligaments walking on their training pitch and said ‘If I was running , I’d of broken it’ , he was used to high end preparation for each club game, and this is the World Cup Finals. ‘Do me a favour, ur livin in cuckoo land’ hehe

    Roy was a great leader, but then you can't blame McCarthy because his record was also great. such a shame that it had to come to blows, because with Roy in that ireland team we could of won that world cup...

      @@Fintanflaherty Mick had a fantastic record as manager of Ireland. We were competing against the best. Unbeaten in qualifying against Portugal, beating the Dutch to a place in the world cup, taking Spain all the way to penalties...
      It's a shame Keane wasn't involved in the end.

      I'd say we've as much a chance of winning the Euro Millions or the National Lottery as Ireland winning the 2002 World Cup even if Keano was in the right frame of mind to play.

    Shay was never much good after he left Newcastle, think he sold out and played for money from then. He was quite good for a season at Man City and then awful, embarrassing for Villa.

He was brilliant at Newcastle for ten years (was inconsistent until Sir Bobby Robson came in), and had one good season at City, but then lost his place to Joe Hart & was rubbish for Villa. Age caught him up and he should have just stayed at Newcastle really.

      @@eamonmac2751 He had one season in the first team at City, then sat on the bench for a whole season behind Joe Hart (Given only played 2 cup games and 0 league games).
      Then went to Villa and lost his place to Brad Guzan and got loaned out to lower leagues 😂😂😂
      Then went to Stoke and didn't play a game for two seasons 🐐
      He ruined his career to win ONE league cup!

      Still why he went out of order is another one! The FAI and McCarthy were badly organized and Saipan wasn't the right place to be! They didn't even practice penalties before the Spain game either! Mick had to ask around who wanted to take a penalty..
