  • The return of the Tommy Tiernan Show with first guest Roy Keane proved to impress the audience with viewers hailing it as "ridiculous, intense and hilarious".
The football legend spoke at length to Tommy about his career and family life. The Cork native revealed that the "only time" he cried during his career was when he "left United and had a few disagreements with some people."

He kept saying he wasn’t the best of players. Let me tell you, I watched Utd live many times and even in that great team he was the best player I’ve ever seen. Football isn’t just about how many step overs you can do. I’m his prime Roy controlled everything on the pitch. He was constantly moving team mates into the right place. He hardly ever lost the ball and always moved the ball forward. He was a joy to watch.

I led Roy Keane and his teams out of the tunnel onto the pitch on two different occasions . 1994 World Cup at Giants Stadium, NJ were Ireland beat Italy 1-0 and in 2003 at Giants Stadium Manchester United vs Juventus were Man U went on to win 4-1 were I also got to sit at the end of the bench. How lucky can one guy be? I am a huge fan of Roy and Man U. and those moments are simply unforgettable.

You simply have to love this man. It doesn't matter where you're from, what you do, the man oozes honesty, loyalty, commitment and doesn't TRY to be loved by anyone - he's his own man and is total class. Humility despite the highest achievements and integrity. Wonderful man. Not a man utd fan, was only getting into football after his peak, but hugely appreciative of his impenetrable character. Roy plays down how good he actually was. That Champions League semi final 2nd leg against Juventus in Turin in 1999 was epic. Juventus 2 - 0 ahead after 10 mins & I thought it was game over but when he pulled it back scoring that header to make it 2 - 1, that's when he took the game by the balls. Juventus had Edgar Davids known as The Pitbull but Roy was a lion that night & was determined they were going to win of which they did & he got a yellow card that cost him playing in the final. Love watching him as a pundit nowadays, just tells it straight. Great to see him relaxed and humble, absolute legend.

This has got to be one of the best interviews ever for an ex/current pro athlete. I think the reason why so many people resonate with Roy Keane is he represents all the qualities and values we see in ourselves or have been taught from a young age. Forget his football success for a moment, this man represents hard work, loyalty, discipline, integrity, honesty and commitment. All the characteristics you would want in a partner, son/daughter, best friend etc. He transcended Man United and the way professional sport and football was viewed in this country. Finally, he downplays his technical skills a lot and says he had to play on the edge to make up for his lack of technical skills. But let me tell you this man was as gifted as any midfielder. Real football fans know he had absolutely everything. An absolute legend and icon of world football and sport.

Just watched this and it's amazing how Keane is so good at acceptance. Accepting that he had to work hard at 9/10 to get to England, acceptance of his weaknesses, his mistakes and his technical ability as a footballer and acceptance that it was over. Clearly, he doesn't delude himself but at the same time, he knew that his strength was his will to win. However, I would say personally that the defensive side of his game was up there with any elite player, brilliant at timing tackles and good distribution to other teammates when he won balls back.
