Whether or not Ireland would have done better with Keane is irrelevant.
The fact is that people within the FAI were not up to the job of giving the correct tools, preparations and support to the squad.
And when a player had the audacity to criticize their failings, the FAI put the blame on to him.
Worse, some influential members of the squad didn't have the courage, or intelligence, or both, to recognise that the preparations were indeed amateurish, and to back their teammate and captain.
If people aren't familiar with high standards, how can they ever know any better?

Keane was right and Mick "Couldn't handle the truth". It's very difficult for anyone, especially a headstrong Mick Mccarthy to admit that they made a mistake. Mick could have said to Roy that what he was saying about the training pitch etc was right, took responsibility for it, and moved on. But he didn't. The fact that ireland were in Saipan in the first place showed a lack of proper leadership, and then the way he dealt with Roy questioning it compounded that lack of leadership.
