I Had To CUT The Transmission OUT Of My CHEAP Hummer H3

- This 2007 Hummer H3 might have been cheap for a reason. I only paid $3,000 and it sort of ran and drove. With all the other H3's out there listed for $7,000 or more I jumped right on this deal and somehow it drove home with no issues! Now that I'm digging into it I'm finding more and more reasons why they dumped it cheap.

There is an emergency key release for the panniers behind the panel above the rear light. The key is in the fob, push a small, concealed button on the side to make it pop out.
Yes I thought the same thing. My bmw definitely has overrides for power outages (though one of them is the “valet” key which I definitely don’t keep on me)
I thought it was just the car manufacturers that had gone down the rabbit hole of making your vehicle totally inaccessible when the battery is dead, so nice to see the motorcycle companies didn't learn from their mistakes.
Never hurts to have a brother in law that can bring the muscle. Great work Eric!
I literally hurts to watch you do this in a garage, on the floor!
Same 😂
@@WatchJRGo I worked in my dads transmission shop for decades in ElDorado and we never owned a lift.

Buy, borrow or steal a transmission jack to reinstall that thing JR!
They are designed for that and you can secure the transmission to it so it does not fall off.
Also, don't pay for oil dry or any kind of shop stuff.
Buy the cheapest kitty litter you can get. It's much cheaper and works just as well.
I haven't had a bike since the mid to late eighties. It would be cool if you put a camera on the front of yours next time you ride it.
Don't forget to keep the battery maintainer on it. 😊
The commitment on content creation that JR has is incredible
Buying trash?
@@ruckisdmb1836 exactly, it’s not like he wants to buy junk and make mediocre videos, if he doesn’t he doesn’t have an income
@@matthewsuter4645 mediocre videos? Would it make you feel better if he had 300k in equipment? How would you have done that job? Personally I’d be on the ground too like most people. Why pay a garage $150 an hour if you can get it done yourself?
@@MichaelSmith-cn7se I’m referring to the last 4-5 months of videos, and you’re wrong about the equipment, he has at least 170k worth of equipment in which he has access to he just chooses not to use since he sold the shop that he stored it all in.
@@matthewsuter4645 He got the job done so he had all the tools he needed as far as I can tell.
You have always had a great deal of knowledge, but over the years that I've following you, you've learned so much! Learning is one of the best parts of life, so thank you so much. I have no talent for what you do, except for hearing and usually knowing what's wrong and how to fix it. Theory only. Something I picked up from the old man that raised me. He was the shop forman for Al Capone's garage, during prohibition. I'm a studio musician etc, but he had an incredible hear for an engine and such. Yada yada, I always enjoy and respect your vids and explanations. Thank you.
There is a panel above the license plate that you pry off on the Gold Wing. You then use the emergency key in the key fob to open the saddlebag.
This brought back memories of changing the trans in my 78 dodge magnum in 3 feet of snow, by myself in 1990.
What a nightmare. 😅
Good job
What a great video. From a point of safety good jobe knowing your limits J.R. . Knowing that if that transmission kicks loose that you don't have quite enough upper body strength to keep if rom falling of the jack was a GREAT call. What a beast of a removal that was.
The intake manifold is a lot easier than it looks. The key is to go through the wheel well with an extension after removing the plastic wheel well cover. Some of the bolts are easier removed by feel rather than sight. Looking at a bolt pattern diagram simplifies the removal and installation process.
Also be sure to clean your throttle body while it's off. Might as well.
I need to get to replacing my reverse servo on my tow trucks 4L80E. This motivates me to get to it.
10 10 10 10 10 Perfect dismount at @5:20.
Crowd goes wild . . .
Actually, seeing you have to do these jobs in your garage (under a shade tree) is more entertaining than in your old fantasy factory.
It's pretty interesting after watching the live stream of the removal, to see just how much of it ended up in the video. I do respect you doing it in the garage shows it can be done, as much as it not fun to do.
I've put battery tender leads on every bike I've ever owned even a vintage CL77 I still have. Saves a lot of trouble with rarely ridden bikes.
Life Hack 101:
I keep a stack of collapsed cardboard boxes just for crawling on the garage floor doing a job just just like this.
It's the wrap. The Wrap sucked the life out of the battery.
On that intake be prepared to use as many extensions that you have, a swivel, and if I remember correctly a 10mm. Done the intake job on my stepdads gmc canyon with the 3.5 inline 5 on the ground just like you all are and it took me 2 days. After many cuss words I managed to get the job done. Just be patient and take your time and you will eventually get it done.
Thanks for showing me another vehicle never to get. I had to remove a Ranger trans this way when the motor locked up. Couldn't turn it over to get at the torque converter bolts. Fun times.
Bonus Goldwing content was a treat for sure.
Oil Gator oil absorbent is your best friend. Bought a 30lb bag in 1994 and am still using it to this day. Works 1000x better than all other oil dry or kitty litter.
Soon back to a two-post? A hint?
Good, I'm not the only one who caught that.
That is some gritty auto repair right there. This guy gets the job done with minimal equipment. Shows everyone what’s possible if you have the will.
After watching a load of videos with folk who have the luxury of 2/4 post lifts, good to see someone who has to live with Jack stands and crawling under the car….. great vids
Wow, so many lessons to learn on this one! Great job!
We built a PIT in our back-yard with a covered space - Transmission were a snap to pull when you had as much room as a LIFT would give you.. at a lower cost.
This video reminds me why i dont miss being a mechanic soaked in gearbox oil 😂
Looking forward to watching the A pillar restoration on the H3 next!
Such an underrated channel
I got a Trans jack to go with my 2 post lift last year. If I had to go backwards now I might just pick a new hobby. 😂
Love your vids man so much fun and informative and really like the way you keep the good vibs. Well done JR. 🎉🎉
My 07 H3 Hummer is now 16 years old. Never been in the shop for anything but oil changes. Best vehicle I have ever owned!
Reminds me of when I removed the transmission on a 98 Chevy Blazer. That was a nightmare!
Add a battery tender and pigtail to the battery when you install the new one.
17:47 I think Jake made a fair point:
For a bike that is not ridden for a while long - i.e., almost all bikes - I think you should put in place a "easy" / "comfort" connector directly to the terminals - from the brand you have a charger, e.g., CTEK, NOCO, Bosch, etc...
This way, not only you are able to charge it easily, but also you will not go through this again.
If your motorcycle has a cigarette lighter you can rig up a 12 volt plug for that and get power to the battery that way
Hey man you should try the avalon king on the windshield plastic and see if it does anything for the hummer
Makes a lot of sense with the converter bolts being super tight.
Hopefully the flex plate is good
Tried to take any metal out of the converter, the flexplate looks perfect 🍻
That gold wing battery is pretty tough. Must be a Honda thing I have an old pc800 Honda pacific coast. You have to take the trunk off, three different plastic pieces and you still have to fight it in there. It’s not cool lol 😆
Great video as always
Yes, I agree with the transmission shop. As much oil that came out of the bell I would say the converter is bad.
With all the parts you get... gotta save some of the cardboard boxes to lay on the garage floor! Also nice to have scrap 2x6, 2x8, 4x4, etc laying around for better stability with the jack
I'm beginning to think the problem is that it's a Hummer
Very possible... the V8 would've been much easier 💯
@@WatchJRGo there's always next time 😊
Add a Noco quick connect charge port to the motorcycle. At least then with the larger chargers, you can turn it into power supply mode and make it unlock the box. It acts as a remote jump terminal. I think the small jump box can plug right into it as well.
Would've cutting the inspection port in the bellhousing bigger work to make those bolts more accessible? It must've been tiny in the first place
On my Victory motorcycle the 12v power port is a constant on and I plug the battery tender into it. There are adapters all over for it
Twitch is back !!! Yippee!!!
JR , that was a lot of fun for me watching you struggle.I said what I said.
If there was ever a moment where you missed your lifts and room from your old shop I’m sure this would be it lol.
Brings back repressed memories of changing broken transmissions in my 02 wrx on the floor and getting gear oil everywhere.
This thing sounds like an absolute nightmare to work on, no wonder i dont see these driving around anymore
Almost sounds like my nightware with a 4L60e rebuild I've been battling with my Trailblazer. Had it rebuilt, within a day started slamming gears, ever since then seems like TC issues. Been back to the shop for over a week now waiting to get fixed again.
Oh man, cutting things out sucks but you gotta what you gotta do, either way it has to come out, rent a transmission jack, trust me, watching now 👍
It sure wasn't the plan till we realized the bolt was toast and there was no other way to get the converter off 😢
@@WatchJRGo You gotta do what you gotta do, it certainly could have been worse. Been there, done that, got the shirt...
If it were me...on the goldwing, I'd have gone ahead and put a pigtail on for a battery tender.
You wouldn't have to hook up a tender, but the plug would already be there if you decided to.
Have great Sunday 🎉
If I could help Watch JR Goes remove the transmission from the Hummer I would drink the shots of whiskey and cold Bartle Skeets with him and pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky with him and get all schmoked up.
Are the GoldWing gods cool with only 500 miles per year of riding? Is it time to unwrap and sell to someone else?
I waited for over a month (in mid 2022) for a remanufactured 4L60E. It went out with fairly low miles (78k) on my '06 Avalanche....but it started acting up early (in reverse) with travel trailer attached. I never towed in overdrive though, which no doubt hastens the 4L60E's demise.
Oh yeah, towing in OD smokes those things
Next time you pull a trans mission, once you undo the rear tranny mount. If you are close to hitting the transmission hump as you pull it back off the engine. Put a jack under the front harmonic balancer and jack it up about an inch... This tilts the rear downwards and a lot of the time the tramission will slide right off the TC ..... Makes it much easier....
Awesome bike!
Can you do a video of converting from automatic to manual transmission?
So they took the Hummer I, designed to be easily serviceable in the field and squashed it down until it was unservicable with no room to remove anything. American automotive ingenuity at its finest.
I hate to say it but... watching you guys struggle with trans was actually interesting. I found myself watching your buddy in pain. I'm sure that trans is heavy and you guys really did struggle. Sorry about finding your pain interesting, lol. I think i was entertained because I knew what you were doing is something hard. Not only that, when I saw you guys upside down on the floor with all that fluid spilled, it just brought back horrifying memories. I really hate doing heavy, dirty stuff on the floor. (Get yourself a shop and a lift man). Good video.
Love your video you should buy atv see you fixing one good job man
Got to be a way to backfeed the electrical on the bike enough to open the bag. Power cell in a accessory Port Maybe?
I think it’s just really cool that I can tell, 100%, that there is one 100% Jake holding the camera for you. Lmao.
At least the access to the battery is decent once you get the bag open and the panel piece off. In my Honda Super Cub the battery is BURIED.
The goldwing doesn’t have a 12V plug outside or does it just not allow charging once completely dead? 😮
Damn people...nothing better to do at 10-11PM lol.
And it's time to epoxy the shop floor 😂
5 hours to pull the intake manifold? Would it not be quicker to unbolt the engine and lift it out of the truck, and then have enough room to remove the starter that way?
I clean up oil spills with dry sawdust for a couple of hours, sweep that up then scatter laundry powder over the remaining oil stain and scrub it in, then spray with just a little water - enough to make a paste and scrub that, then hose it away and it's all good.
Seem like the drivetrain in the h3 share the same one in 1st generation Colorado and canyon with the z71 package 😮😮😮😮
@6:30 time to do some sketchy shit do da do da hope I get away with it oh da do da dayyy lol
Would a tramsmission jack been helpful?
can you add remote jump terminals to that plastic cover
The pistons in the Goldwing must be tiny since it's only 1.8 liters.
8:38 ... looks like JR finally killed someone in his shop. 🤣
Who shot JR?
What a nightmare job on the H3. Shop floor was a mess. LOL. Can't wait to see once it's finished though. As far as your Goldwing and dead battery, did you try the good ol push and roll start in 2nd gear? I guess if the battery was dead as a wedge it wouldn't work.
every time ithink i have a 20 min project its always an hr , hr plus lol
Let ask you a ? I have a 1998 Lincoln Town car I just got the door module quit working if I send it to you could you take a look at it and see if you can repair it cuz you look do really good on electrical parts cuz I do believe it blew the capacitor out of it tried getting one used one from the junkyard but they where bad and ford don't make them anymore
Is that a G body rear end laying by ur bike
I see an SC430 in the background! Let’s see some Lexus content!
Yikes on garage floor ugh on parts cannon 😮
Back to 2 post lift soon? That's the second hint (or slip of the lip) I've heard recently. What's goin' on JR?
You need to tune up the engine on that Honda. It didn't start until the _second_ piston came up on the compression stroke! Sitting without being run for several months is no excuse. 😀
You need a set of Quick Jacks...
did ya check to see if the bike is charging???
Did you get rid of the lift you had for the garage? You had it before you bought the big shop...
You don't want quickjacks for a transmission pull 💯
@@WatchJRGo Roger that. Access and clearance... Got it
The more I think of it, these GM transmission are very much like UniFi equipment. Works OK, but you need to go through a bunch of hoops, just to get it installed removed or maintained.
Why didn’t you use Johnny’s lift for the transfer case ànd transmission?
He figured it would take too long to deal with and didn't want to tie up the lift for paying customers.
Because it would be in his way for 3 weeks, I'd much rather be in my way 🍻
@@WatchJRGo Johnny wouldn’t mind. He’d give you a parking space outside.
@@69Dartman Tie up the lift? No way. Johnny would help push it into a parking space outside.
@@gregdiamond6023 Johnny probably would because he's a good guy but I personally wouldn't want a rig I'm hoping to fix and sell down the road to sitting in a open parking lot that long. Might be missing some windows and parts by the time the transmission was done and no fault of Johnny's.
No wonder someone punted this one to someone else. At least it wound up in good hands....

I just watched the latest Jared video about Jeep frame rot. He did an actual O'Reilly commercial at the beginning! So what's up with that ? It's practically your second home !
sounds like the person either did the transmission themselves or had a friend do it instead of taking it to a shop
Can u power thru cigarette lighter? Harleys have them
Possibly but I'd have to make a cable for that 😬
J.R. worked smart, not hard. The only way to do it.
