INSANE Heat Wave Caused Gabe's Family Hauler To EXPLODE

- 105* degree days did a number on this VW Routan (Chrysler Town & Country) and the cooling system couldn't stand it. The plastic fittings between the engine and the heater core broke and stranded Gabe on the side of the highway for 3 hours. Today we're going to try and fix it at home without buying the very expensive factory hose.

Old times! You and Gabe working on a car in your garage! Always enjoyed these combos, car repairs and friendships all mixed into one video. Thanks!
It's fun to see old friends have fun cutting up together. At 61 years old I have already lost 2 of my best friends. I sure do miss cutting up with them. Great video.
Good to see you Gabe, just not under the circumstances. Three hours on the side of the road is torture, glade you are alright brother.
Nice to see you working on a car for a change. Good to see Gabe again, tell him sorry about the Sky.
Good to see Chrysler kept using cheap plastic on critical parts. This was the biggest problem I had with my 2.7 - plastic thermostat housing would crack every 40,000 miles.
When I worked at Chrysler Parts, the 2.7L & 3.5L coolant housing, and these damn heater hoses for the T&C/Caravan/Routan were sold on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis. they were complete junk.
Yup, we changed his thermostat housing on this last year 💯
Same issue with plastic coolant elbows on the GM 3.8 V6... they all do it. Tell any auto manufacturer they can save 5 cents per car and the beancounters will jump on it every time as long as it lasts past the warranty.
@@subrosa.photographyor the oil filter housings lol
The good thing is you become very skilled at it vs the frustration of doing new projects all the time. Like my wheel bearings, the first one took 6 hours now I can get it done in 1 hour with no trips to the parts store.
Thanks for always being there JR . You’re a good man.
I missed seeing Gabe on the channel! Can’t wait to keep watching the cabin content! 😂
Im a mechanic and was working on them for 13 years. left the job in 2012 and any plastic (water) fitting eventually cracks and crumbles on them. I can remember an audi A6 SOHC v6 the customer had a small leak from the water pipes that ran from the throttle body and eventually overheated. A slow drip. They have a splash shield for the oil from the cams in the rocker covers. it got so hot they both melted ran down the drain holes into the oil pan and the melted plastic blocked the oil pick up and that seized the motor. Awesome design. if the water leak doesn't get you the melting plastic will. The golfs had the plastic water outlets with the o rings that had steel sleeves around the 2 6mm bolts that hold them on. mk3. They regularly cracked from the sleeves to the centre and if you didn't see the the antifreeze stain it would turn into a dripping leak quickly. That was also compounded by the rad fan sender failing regularly. Any of the Audis with an orange plastic dipstick sleeve. They were on the fast seller list at the dealers. Well they break off at the bottom from heat and time and if you dont realise that they are broken the dip stick sits lower in the tube giving a false level reading. (by quite a lot) Then you have the brown positive cables on the A4s that run from the battery to the starter. After 2 to 3 years the insulation falls off them and the only bit that doesn't fall off is the piece that is under the 'P' clip on the back corner of the block behind the manifold. they are tight enough not to touch any thing but its still scary finding them. I could go on. LOL
I know exactly what you're saying. I'm a mechanic too with a lot less experience but I've already seen a ton of coolant leaks related to leaking plastic parts. It is sickening to realize how much plastic is being used in today's modern engines. I refuse to buy any of them; I stick with engines that are made with primarily metal. Amazing: they don't leak coolant...and seem to have less problems in general, too!
I just replaced both heater core hoses on my moms 12 Town and country a week ago, and about a year prior I had to replace both hoses on my old 13 Grand Caravan. I replaced mine in 90 degree heat in a blacktop parking lot in direct sunlight. Was definitely not fun but it is what it is. But the second time around I did it in less than 15 minutes. Was much easier in a 70 degree night. I used the Dorman hoses, for $150 both times. Mine actually burst, and my moms was just leaking. Super known issue with these vans.
Excellent job saving BIG $ doing your own work. I love to see/ hear people in your situation! Im the same way.
@@christinesommerfeld9815 thank you! I have always had an interest in mechanical work. I come from a long line of “gear heads” but I myself am not. I’m not super knowledgeable but I can confidently do most “basic” maintenance. I got quoted almost $900 for coils and plugs on my old car. I did it for $150 all in. It’s very satisfying to me to do my own work. It was that job i did that made me realize it’s not as difficult as people have made it out to be. I just want to be confident in my ability. Hopefully I can learn to do some more repairs from of the work on my car I’m doing with my dad tomorrow. Really looking forward to it! I’ve never really payed attention to the suspension work I’ve been growing up with. But I’m really going to try to retain what goes into it tomorrow. :)
Good to see Gabe again!
Just a quick correction. The coaster you were describing with the cable lift is Millennium Force. A Giga coaster standing at 310 feet. Initial drop speed, 93 Mph. The one that stalled is the Magnum XL200 , a 200 foot coaster with a chain lift. Initial drop speed, 72 Mph. Built in 1989, it was the worlds first "Hyper" coaster and kept that record until 1994. The ride stalled due to what is being called a "standard ride stoppage". These typically are a result of a track sensor error that will not allow the ride to re-start until it is cleared for safety reasons. Love your videos btw! Keep up the great job!
I've been stuck on Millennium Force half way up. We waited 45 minutes and they resumed it and said it was a 'unbuckled' seatbelt.
Great to see Gabe again!!!! My van just did that to me a couple of weeks ago. First time it's ever left me stranded. Fix those lifters soon or you'll be changing the cam as well.
It's what happens when accountants override the engineers. They'll spend a billiondy dollars on a 10 Way adjustable seat that you will never readjust once it's set, but they will totally skimp out on critical engine items like cooling hoses. It's asinine.
That's a great observation ! There always things I never needed and would not miss.
Yes! And the consumer blames the people at the assembly plant for the corporation cheaping out on components. Unfairly.
@@christinesommerfeld9815I blame professional auto reviewers. They get so caught up with gimmicky junk and "soft touch dashboards" vs "cheap feeling plastic dash" so manufacturers respond accordingly and we end up with giant laggy screens, bubbling "soft touch" dashboards (literally touch mine once a month when cleaning, made more difficult by not being plastic), 8 buttons to accidentally hit on the key fob, and fake buttons.
Dorman makes the aluminum oil filter etc adaptor on the top of the engine too, and it sounds like it's starting to lose one of the roller rockers from the minor tick I'm hearing. If it is replace them right away before it starts eating the cam lobe, then it's a lot more work and parts.
Yeah but it has problems too, After 2 of them I went back to OEM.
I always love Gabe’s shirts 😂😂
If I remember correctly, the OE part includes the cross-over behind the motor or something. It is expensive. My wife's T&C had this issue last year. Just wait until you have to do the oil cooler. I was talking to one of my buddies who runs a shop and he was impressed my factory one made it to 180k. He said probably because I change my own oil and don't crank on it.
and you WILL have to do the oil cooler! They always start leaking and you'll know it when you dump oil on right turns.
Nice! Sounds like your Pentastar might have the lifter tick going on as well.
Keep an eye on the plastic thermostat housing. Was a super slow leak on my caravan and took out the alternator with it.
Love seeing you and Gabe working together.
Wait, this is a car channel? 😂 Nice to see Gabe again. 😀
Now these are the “Watch JR Go” videos I like to watch. Welcome back.
cars vs building remodels? Yes (unless it is a garage 🙂)
Gabe is back with his epic follow up to Sky Fall in Van on The Wrecker. It’s full of excitement but low on coolant. 😮
Circa 2011 I was working at a dealer and a woman bought a dodge van. She hated it and had a million problems with it. We took it back and sold her a Routan. Next time she was in she was going on about how you “could feel the German quality” 😂
I know they’re the same platform, but after thoroughly test, driving the caravan, Town & Country, and Routon, I had to go with the retard! There was a noticeable difference.
Good to see Gabe again.
I was so relieved to get rid of my Caravan years ago. Comfortable to drive, tons of room, but horribly unreliable.
Good to see Gabe in the videos
That Y fitting also applies to any *.7 Mopar engine. Hadda pick one up for our 4.7 Durango reman swap.
At first i was like Honda or Toyota broken down on the side of the road no way. Then I realized it was a VW/Chrysler and it all made sense.
I pass many Japanese makes broken down on the side of the road. All brands have their weaknesses. 150,000 mi. And a $20 plastic piece cracked. What a catastrophy...
My father-in-law owns a repair shop that specializes in imports.
His father and uncle started it in 1957.
They work on Japanese vehicles every day and they suffer from minor niggles to catastrophic failures just like American and European vehicles.
They aren't as reliable and durable as urban legend suggests.
Daawwwww. Missed opportunity!
Routan BOOM!
I think VW would be fine with you resurrecting that.
If I see you and Gabe in a vid, I immediately know it’s going to be some awesome content! 🤝
A combination of Chrysler and VW. What could possibly go wrong.
280 temp and the engine still runs without a blown head gasket. That is indeed the miracle here.
Great to see gabe back on the channel!!!!!
So good to see Gabe again.
Its so true! After fixing a coolant leak it always smells like coolant for the next week. No matter how much you try and clean it.
You have your coasters mistaken JR. Magnum XL was the biggest at just over 200 ft, but it is chain driven. The one out of the station and straight up quickly is the Millenium Force.
Yep those Y-connectors are super common to go out on those! If you're just replacing the Y-connectors do make sure that the hoses themselves are not grungy because they will self destruct in a very short amount of time! I've had that happen before on those and it's no fun!
Great to see Gabe again.. and JR too. HAHAHA
Some stop leak, send it and back to the mini resort! Good to see Gabe again.
I was thinking about replacing that Y-pipe on my 2012 T&C as a preventative measure, and I was sure I was going to have the order the metal replacement part. It's nice to know that O'Reilly had it in stock. I'll have to check them out.
With common failure parts, they usually have a stock.
Always happy to see Gabe on video :D
we need to see more of Gabe!
The 3.6 in the town and country has the same problem, I had to replace mine at 125,000 miles I think it was
Orion at Kings Island is nearly identical. They are both great rides. The best thing about Cedar Point was Top Thrill, but it will be back next year.
Good video, glad it was a cheap repair. You have got some serious lifter tick in that engine, though. Super common 3.6 problem. Eats the cams if you keep driving it that way. Best get that repaired or you'll be replacing the whole engine.
I am very disappointed by the amount of plastic used on the 3.6 engine. I have seen so many coolant issues on these engines. (I'm a mechanic so I see a lot of vehicles come in and out).
My 11 Caravan seeped at the same spot last year. The tech actually sent me a video of the y pipe leaking. Service advisor got it covered under the Lifetime Max Care contract. Very good.
12:13 Six Flags Great America runs the American Eagle in reverse at times. I sadly never was there to ride it backwards. But I think it’s probably the best wooden coaster in the states.
Bold call putting the engine cover back on before testing. I’ve learned to leave *something* off as a sacrifice to the automotive repair gods while testing. The smite the over confident.😂
Just replaced all the roller rockers on my 3.6... and I hear the dreaded ticking sound on Gabe's engine... Better change them before it eats the cam
Good to see you again Gabe!!
Great to see Gabe back on your channel. Miss the fun builds you did with him and Josh. Hope to see more content besides the resort build.
Gabe is like sunshine on a weekend, there is never enough sunshine on a weekend.
When the weather gets to the 100 degree mark and over, enough is enough of the sunshine. 🙂
@@pcthayer😂🤣
Such a good neighbor!
That lovely Chrysler 3.6 colab lol
Gabe and ice cream, what else do you need? Oh yeah, and the Kansas Highway Patrol! Haha
I have a cedar point season pass since I'm local. Getting stuck on a roller coaster is my nightmare. We got stuck on the King Cobra at Kings Island in the late 80s, early 90s and they let us wait it out until they got it moving. It didn't take long but it was pretty horrible.
I fixed that issue with some aluminum replacements. Easy fix.
I feel like you're confusing Magnum XL 200 with Millennium Force. Magnum (the red one) is 200 feet tall (the first Hyper coaster) , so the ride stoppage happened near the top of the lift hill. Millennium Force (the blue one) is over 300 feet, so it's a Giga coaster. I'd take Millennium Force over Magnum any day!
Going to Cedar Point this week, so I'm hoping the coasters are all running!
I literally replaced those heater hoses on my Caravan 3.6 last week. Rockauto has the cheapest set of the complete hose assemblies i could find with metal y-fittings. SKP brand.
112 degrees F here in Phoenix, AZ for the past couple of months. My Mercury Grand Marquis hasn't blown up.
My Grand Caravan had the metal hose upgrade long before it became an issue. It is the same on the 3.3 and 3.8 motors.
Hot with silly humidity! That's why I live in California. We get a week or two in the 90s with low humidity and breeze off the ocean cooling it down in the evening. And sign south of town says no service for 70 miles. Just cows and twisty roads to ride motorcycles!
Good to see the Gabe man back. Still the master of understatement. Shame about the circumstances. As a point of interest we have not had a reading above 16 Celsius fir 4 weeks now . We are located 25 miles S/West of Glasgow Scotland. 😀
Don't need a good mechanic when you have a friend as handy as JR.
It's been 2 years since I worked for AutoZone and I still remember that part number. The whole heater hose kit with the metal Y is the Dorman 626-315HP and is about $135
Easy fix. I hear that classic Pentastar engine tick.
Cheers from Canada buddy. Your buddy Tom Cruse makes your channel even greater. 😆
THANKS GABE! You saved the day... Bringing us some Automotive content.😉
Make sure Gabe gets the other three plastic pipes replaced. Same happened to me on vacation. Crapped out right beside a garage. Fixed the bad one and gave me the other two to take home.
lol. I can imagine after putting that part in JR looking at Gabe and going "Ok, let's put some coolant in it and see how it works..."
"Ok! Where is the coolant?"
"I don't have any. Didn't you buy some?"
You should do a thorough burping of the coolant system on these vans compared to other vehicles. If he comes back with random minor overheating, that's the cause. With coolant lines running all the way to the rear of the van, there's a LOT of spaces for bubbles to get stuck.
wtf is at the back?
A second heater core
I have done the same on my wifes Ford Expedition with the 5.4. Works great and the hose is $160 from the dealer.
That same hose broke on my 2011 Chrysler Town and Country. Fortunately the parts store had one in stock.
A roller coaster named Magnum XL?? This roller coaster is --asking-- *begging* for a meme.
HI GABE - GOOD TO SEE SOME NORMAL CAR REPAIR VIDEOS AGAIN
Classic banter with the Gabester!
Gabe, nice eagle rising plate up front my there!
Great having gabe break his car. After all the restore vidz it’s like a fresh of fresh air 😆 🍻
We love Gabe and his German Plymouth Caravan.
My 2006 Tahoe has those "y"s up by the firewall for coolant as well, and they too are plastic. They're not leaking, but I've got brand new OEM ones to replace them when I get in the mood. Don't know if they make metal ones for my car or not.
2006 Tahoe will run forever. Great buy.
That Y blew up on me too, but this was a few years ago.
When I had to do this on my Grand Caravan, I didn't know about the Dornan part. I paid $100 for the Gates part.
I have a PVC pipe cutter that works well for hoses.
You're thinking of millennium force, magnum is a true chain chugga chugga chugga. Still love magnum.
We learn, in the south, 2 things when we start driving. The importance of maintaining your a/c and importance of cooling system maintenance. Turns out, it was important this summer everywhere.
As always Gabe's T-shirt game is on point, and this one did not disappoint!
Probably worth changing out when you do a coolant change if you have that engine. Which I do.
That happened to me on my 2015 Dodge Journey.. That shit was crazy
Gade looks like my older brother always glad to see him on your channel
You’re describing Millenium Force JR. 😂. Magnum is much older and only ~200 ft.
Go ahead and replace the other Y as well. This happened on my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. I just replaced the one, then the other failed and overheated, taking the head gasket with it. Thanksfully this is the 3.3 L not the Pentastar engine.
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no point in being a damn fool about it." W. C. Fields. 5:19
Sounds like that van might have a bad rocker with the ticking noise. Sounded just like my GC with the 3.6. I ended up having one bad rocker but replaced them all. Now it's nice and smooth.
Exactly what it is! I’ve not had time or motivation to fix it though.
@@Gabe-ABNCW3 it was the same with me too. Summer was approaching though and I needed to do some family trips with it. Took me a month to do because I work so much from home and hot af but I got it done. It can be done in a day though, lol. Good luck!
love gabe lol. sorry to hear about your van.
OG, JR and Gabe in the garage!!
Good work and saved money
I love that John Ross foxes cars the way I do plumbing….with 3 trips to the store to buy parts that I should have bought in the previous run. 😂
Seriously, I’m not a car guy, but that is the reason I WatchJRGo.
