My 1996 Solectria Force, the insanely rare electric Geo Metro needs a lot of work. There are maybe a handful of Force's left in the world and this one is in pretty good condition... but the alignment was off everywhere. We're going to get it on the alignment rack and make this car drive the way it should.

Good thing to install a navigation car-audio unit system on a 20-mile-range vehicle. In case you get lost in your neighbourhood you could send your location pin to your family and drain the remaining battery listening to music and waiting for them to come pick you up.
I think you should change out the light to LEDs. Curious to know if it helps the range…
It will not, but good LEDs looks better.
@@pashko90 it might help a little. LEDs headbulbs uses ~10W while normal bulbs uses 55w. Thats 45w difference. Per headlamp. So thats 90w total for only those two.
I feel like this is the perfect long termer project car for the channel, definitely worth looking at upgrading to Li-ion batteries for this, would be really interesting to watch and see this car brought right up to date with modern technology, while still looking original on the surface (head unit replacement is a given, makes the driving experience in old car so much more enjoyable)

@@jxke AGM is still lead acid though. If you're going to do conversions, you ned a different charger anyway.
@@hojnikb Nah. AGM or Lead Acid Gel will work fine to replace those old batteries and maintain the same charger. His is the Lead Acid model not the NIMH Force.

Android auto is one of the best things you can do for an older car, it makes it more livable. Sadly a lot of cool cars are single DIN and a pop out screen blocks the controls for the HVAC.
You know what would be fun aswell? Making that thing more efficient - try moon hubcaps, lowering it and smooting the floor out with abs or aluminium sheeting and the freshest prius eco tires, LED bulbs everywhere and see what it does with the range
As a time served car audio fitter, I enjoyed watching this. Some double DINs werea challenge in certain cars with the odd cage sizes lol. Looks good!
Now if only the car could drive further than it takes to watch a typical sitcom.

That multi-fit install kit takes me back... and then you had to deal with the sleeves that never wanted to let go of the head unit.
Excellent choice for the older EV, it should place a lower power demand on the batteries. The wiring is usually simple for android head units which is a big plus.. As far as the EV, in your opinion, would a lithium battery swap increase the range or too little gain to justify the expense? Awesome content!
An episode of Texas Metal had the shop owner get his electric golf cart upgraded from lead cell batteries to a lithium battery cell.

Just did the exact same thing with the red wire on my Atoto I installed on a 1990 Silverado this past weekend.
I use the Atoto a6 in my Infiniti and love it, was told that because i have the bose system that i would need an adapter to make it work, but knowing something about car audio all i did is run a 4 channel amp for the speakers and hijacked the wires from the bose amp to the speakers with no issue. but the A6 unit has everything that the s8 does for the most part . I love it and would recommend the Atoto units, you cannot beat the price
I just put this same unit in my (almost antique) ranger EV! Super useful for keeping an eye on battery stats. Old EVs are cool, it's nice they're actually simple enough to work on independently
I have the A6 Pro PRB in my car, awesome head unit. Its a little slow as its 4yrs old but i think the only one now that has the Toshiba Class A amp is one of the high end S8 Premium models. They really do make the best head units. Also their steering wheel remote is superb and only $30.
The Metro had a radio as an option, IIRC. This could very well be the Solectria option.
It seems like the OEM radio would've been a Delco unit 📻

@@questioner1596 I'm sure they paid all of twenty five dollars for the JVC whereas a Delco that might come with the Metro that would cost you and me over $450 they could get for a whopping fifty bucks.
From what I remember the cars they ordered from gm were strippers for the most part. I'd be surprised if they had a radio when gm delivered them, if they did it was a basic Delco am/fm children's toy looking radio.

Those connectors were invented in WW2 and used by "special forces" in their demolitions kits. The early versions were self igniting. After a quick tiny chemical reaction the connection would be made permanent and water proof.
I have the F7, the wireless android auto works well... and then randomly disconnects. usually fine unless you're streaming music. and the touch screen is just slightly off, touch left of what you want, some things on the right no worky.
That head unit probably cost more than my 95 Metro.

The cupped attachment that comes with that heat gun makes using those soldered connections even easier.
I'm always curious about the audio quality of the amps in these. Since my old Saturn got flooded, I couldn't justify the blood loss to replace the speakers in my replacement car: getting in to those door panels is torture. Instead I just changed the head unit to a Pioneer Bluetooth cable unit, and honestly much to my surprise the sound quality improvement was almost as much as from doing the head unit and 3 ways (also pioneer) in my old car. I'd love something more capable (even if I don't drive it enough to really justify it) but I wouldn't want to go backwards from 2010 Pioneer head unit built in amp audio quality...
How much distance will you trade off if you turn up the stereo?

Now it's time to upgrade the battery and charging system. You need to upgrade to Li batteries and install a DC fast charging system. You need to go full on Rich Rebuilds for this thing!!!
Ive had the F7 for nearly 2 years now . I replaced an older Double din Pioneer and I was very impressed with the quality of Atoto. I have it hooked up to a backup camera, sub/amp. Ive had no problems so far with it. I have USB full of music videos that the radio is able to natively play, only when the car is parked😉

I've always put the microphone more in the middle of the car, behind the mirror, or just have it coming out right by the radio. When you put it by the door/pillar you pick up a lot of road/wind noise. 🍻
Does that radio draw any more power than the stock one you replaced it with? I wonder if it will affect the battery life

I've never seen Clarion as a factory stereo. I'm impressed that someone used the rear attachment for the radio, I used to install those in the 80's-90's and no one ever used them (I did). The stereo would bounce around if you didn't use it, made for a much better install.

I installed a head unit like that once.
GPS antenna, microphone, WiFi antenna, reverse camera, connect a massive rat's nest of wires from the previous head unit to the new one and I had to fabricate a connection to the steering wheel controls.
It was a horrible mess, the radio didn't fit the slot, there was no bezel for it, the unit (an Autopimpkin) was slow as heck and kept crashing.
Now I just fit a reverse camera with bigger screen and Android Auto to connect to my phone. Soooo much easier.
Two head units for the price of one 😀 good to see Gabe too

I never hooked up the wifi antenna on my atoto and wireless car play and android auto work without it
Check out the Joying car stereos in general. Wireless apple car play, tire pressure sensors, cool trim kits, etc. I like mine.

The steering wheel control option, is it one that learns your factory buttons? Having a mid 00's SAAB 9⁵, there isn't a steering wheel adapter easily available for the "Dame" era 9⁵'s, so if this learns the wheel controls, this would be perfect to upgrade...
My Focus required some ridiculous radio removal tool (basically, a pair of U-shaped prongs).

If memory serves, stock GM head units are DIN and a half. That head unit looks like a double DIN.

JVC radio is not stock, it’s a after market radio.
Solectria may have ordered them without radios and installed the JVC, so it would be stock in that case 🍻

Had an ATOTO A3 (I think that was the model) in my 99 Sierra a few years ago. Was a great "no name" unit! Enjoy!
Careful with those head units! They drain the battery dead and many times won't turn off when you turn off the car
I've installed these for a few customers. These ATOTO headunits are junk when it comes to RCA output voltage. Mainly the single subwoofer RCA that only outputs 0.8 volts. Cranking your amps gain up that high to match is awful. To get past that, you need to spend more money for a good line out converter. They're okay if you're just looking to upgrade the stock headunit in your car and get it somewhat relevant. Even with all of those "hifi" quality settings, it is very far fetched. Get a Jensen CAR910W for cheaper. Less settings. But, way better on the preamp side of things. I run one in my car and it's distortion free all the way up on internal amp side and the preamp side, with a solid 4 volts out of the RCA's. Or, save up a bit more money and get the new Sony Mobile ES XAV-9500ES unit for the ultimate feature rich sound quality headunit that you will never have issues with.
can you show how you figured out what harnesses you needed to connect this head unit to your car? I was looking at installing this in a Honda Fit but I wasn't sure about what harnesses were needed or even how to figure it out.

There's no way that JVC is stock. That's probably what the second owner did because an original owner wouldn't pay $450 for a stock GM head unit and then replace it.
Maybe the $450 had to do with extra equipment to make a radio work with an EV like with the AC?
If you find it's tricky getting the screws started, magnetize your screwdriver so they stick to it.
