  • Bike shops aren't the ones responsible for the excessive bike prices.
    Prices are too high, but we need to look at the whole supply chain for reasons why.

    Big name manufacturers making bikes in Asia for £400 and selling them for £4k+ is extortionate.
    Greed and mismanagement is putting them out of business left & right.

    Not only have the prices gone up, new bikes have cheaper components on them now. A 2018 Giant trance mtb had slx everything, now a new one has a mix of deore and lower quality brakes.

    • @dirtyred2000
      @dirtyred2000 Před měsícem +3

      So 2 things wrong here
      Trance X is a 2000$ full sus, deore got better and is what SLX was. Notice Deore doesn’t really make it on low end bikes anymore, shimano upped their game.
      Lower end brakes is also wrong, they have tektro m745’s nothing low end about those. Quad and 2 piston set ups, each brake is 100$ a piece so I think yall just need a better understanding of the industry. The bikes you see on sale now that is the new retail, from an LBS tech and ex giant mechanic you’re welcome.

    • @bkaza
      @bkaza Před měsícem +2

      Its easy to see the same thing is happening to bikes with everything else, receive a lower quality product for more money. It's the world we live in but there are deals out there for the bargain conscience buyer. You being an ex giant mech has nothing to do with what you said. It's just your opinion. Cheers!

      @@dirtyred2000just speaking as a trance owner the tektro brakes provide less bite or feel than the shimano on my fathom. They still get the job done but if I was consistently riding black or techy trails, I'd switch them out.

    I bought an SL7 Pro ultegra di2 for $7000 in a sale it definitely wasn’t worth the original $10,500. Now a 105 costs $7000 what a joke

    I never thought it was the bike shops. The manufacturers try to dictate the terms of their inventory to the bike shops, and depending on the demographics surrounding an individual shop, they may not be able to support and move that inventory without taking a loss.

    if most of the products we purchase are not made in china or global south, we probably have to pay $120 for a simple wrench in home depot, or $ 135 for basic denium jeans in Target, and $3,300 for iphone. Mtb & its components are mostly made in USA or japan except some forks or frames in taiwan.

    I just saw a Chinese carbon road bike with 105 di2 and nice DT Swiss wheels for $1999USD, and, a Chinese electronic conversion group for 800 euros. If the established bike and component makers don't get their shit together they're going to go the way of the Dodo.

    Remember it is only a push bike, 12 bearings 2kg of fibre and some aluminium. A 20k super bike is about 6K overpriced based on inflation. New cyclists with money think 10k plus is the norm. Im sure they will all get burnt and then may learn a lesson. Anything over say 8k is absolutely pointless for the punter. Remember YOUR the engine.....Unfortunately bikes have become a fashion accessory to ride with the boss once a month to show off. Note, no-one actually cares what you ride.

    Post Covid - Every man and his dog bought a bike. The bike industry realised how much they can push the boundaries and people will pay whatever price they set.
    I used to buy group sets/Bikes and parts from the uk much cheaper than here. Now most of that has been stopped. What do Coles and Woolies say is Treasure Island Australia.
    Capitalism, greed, cycling should be accessible for everyone not the privileged classes who can afford the premium high end bikes.
    It used to be accessible for the working guy/gal who would save up and experience something niche expensive high end could buy a decent spec bike as they normally drove a shit box car and enjoyed the benefits of cycling, freedom, fun, goals, adventure, community fitness etc

    I think the biggest increase in bike prices in the past decade has been the groupsets ... I used to be able to kit a bike with top of the range DuraAce for $1500 or less, but now it's a $4000+ endeavor. The bike frames in comparison hasn't seen such a significant jump in pricing.

    • @feezee82
      @feezee82 Před měsícem +1

      But to be fair, a modern Dura Ace is wireless, has a build in power meter, and is 12 speed versus old 10 speed. I’m also pretty sure that a modern Ultrega will outperform an old Dura Ace

    Don’t think it’s the bike shops’ problem, but I also don’t think manufacturers are to blame. Components are expensive, workers are expensive, everything is expensive. Manufacturers are struggling more than the bike shops. Prices won’t go down. It’s the same thing with everything else: cars, motorcycles, etc.

  • @lastpme

    If the bike shops make their money on accessories they are screwed because people can buy that stuff on Amazon. I have a mountain, road, and gravel bike so I don’t need a new bike. I buy all my accessories on Amazon. I only go to the shop if there is a repair I can’t do or I want to buy a new bike…but bikes are so expensive it will be a while before I upgrade one of my bikes.

  • @dw9025
    @dw9025 Před měsícem +4

    I agree 100%
    It's an over supply issue now combined with greed coming from the top, same as the new car market, the margins in new cars are next to nothing, so not the bike shops.
    Just with anything these days, bikes have come victim to clever marketing, you need to be so careful what you are purchasing, components are so variable and expensive, large companies intentionally fit bikes with a mix of average components and top tear, knowing those average parts will fail sooner than expected and you'll need to replace them, they still sell these bikes for top dollar, every component wears, but this tactic is cheeky, even on 10k+ bikes still have average components, then there are standards issues, like derailleur hangers, causing limited upgrade possiblities, 20k for a non ebike MTB , sure thing!
    I wonder how many people actually have the coin to afford one of these bikes, I mean walk in pay cash! most people would finance them, by the time they pay it off, the bike is worn or it's incompatible to upgrade with the components they want, if they can afford to even pay for maintenance, I certainly can't afford it.
    These bikes are also high risk of theft. Due to high prices.
    Buying a new bike is stressful, it used to be a pleasure, these high prices mixed with the above issues are making it very hard for normal avenge Joe's to own really nice a nice bike, me included ☹️, once you ride a good bike it changes you, you know the difference, you can't go back, that feeling of engagement, legs to wheels, your connected to the bike, I wish I never jumped on my mates custom $10k bike 18 years ago 😁 he's cost me some money.

    Models in the United States are changing with everything. Even Home Depot doesn't buy all their inventory, with thousands and thousands of inventory items stocked by manufacturer and point of sale and inventory tracking for payment on sold items. In bike a motorcycle shops manufacturers better start assuming more risk and getting more models on the floor for purchase, current model is going to have many bike shops not able to buy 10-15 bikes in different sizes at wholesale and shops are going to look more and more empty..bar codes should have people like Specialized and Trek knowing how many bikes in what size and color were sold per day or week and see if there is a trend.. with shoes, helmets and clothing, not having data is wrecking the business.. bike shop has 5 pairs of 36 or 48 shoes that nobody will ever buy..XXXL jerseys or helmets that manufacturers sell in lots so you get the clothes and helmets and shoes in sizes you can sell but are forced to take stuff you don't want and is shop clutter .. manufacturers have to make you pay for some inventory. But data is going to show if direct to consumer is really the answer for today going forward or are shops still a part of the sales and service model for bike business..if you want a crude fitting, it's not going to be easier than at a shop.. when you get your Canyon, going to end up going there anyway..

    too high? thisassumes prices were ever at some point low.
    I paid 50$ once to have someone remove a crank, and when i told them my bottom bracket was broken they told me i was wrong, guess what? it was the bottom bracket.
    people who work at bike shops constantly make mistakes, over talk when im talking, and charge too much for everything.
    "and here we have our 'light' bikes" lmao
    sorry but why am i paying an extra 30% to have to deal with....a small selection and a bunch of know it alls lmao

    there will always be high end stuff in whatever industry you can think of. seems most of the bike shops have been bought up by the corporate sector selling the mega priced gear. in my mind why bother? it's all eye dropping expensive. it's all proprietary. it takes forever to figure out what might work to fix something. my days of racing are over and I just laugh at what shops are these days.

    Look at the second hand market. S-works SL6 disc, selling for $7k. S-works SL7 disc selling for 9-10k. The $3k jump is Covid. The more concerning thing is the middle tier has died. A new cyclist may get a second hand average bike for $1500. Then wants to buy something new mid tier with Ultegra and it's a massive jump to $8k!!! 105 is acceptable but that is still $7k. There is no way in hell I'd pay $7k for a 105 bike, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. I can buy an S-works Sl6 rim brake full DA for $6k and have the best frame, lightest groupset and fastest setup. The poor mid tier cyclists just feel like they are getting screwed and they are. They are leaving the sport in droves. There will be fewer and fewer who are still in the sport when they reach a financial level to buy a top end bike, by then they will be playing golf.
