I watched your video, and then I watched the short where Trevor slaps open the lock. What the heck was happening there? Why would the lock open from a slap? Neither your video nor his explains why the lock fails so easily.
McNally's featured a lot of locks that can be smacked open in his channel, the short of it is that there's an internal spring that is weak enough to be vulnerable to kinetic attacks
They've both already explained locks with similar failures before, in essence the company didn't add a basic feature to prevent the catch from being jarred into the open position, releasing the shackle iirc
The three pins that LPL took care to remove from the shackle at the start of the teardown has shoddy tolerances that just jostling that part can open that shit up. I know I'm showing my age, but back in the 1980s, all the shutter locks I remember having all were key retaining. The key would remain in the lock until a brass stud was pushed in, allowing the key to turn and a ball bearing to engage the shackle. Then, some time in the 1990s, Master Lock came out with identical looking shutter locks, but were not key retaining, and from what I gather, had this flaw. I do wonder if lock makers should go back to key retaining designs, but I'm guessing people want convenience and ease of removing the key, as a trade-off for security. Ironically the American padlocks in the 80s and 90s (before Master bought them) were all key retaining, so a lock bypass was effectively impossible.

Bought one of these a few years ago on the back of a LPL video and now this. Guess it's time for a new lock. Mul-t-lock should be issuing refunds/replacements with a better option because they are not cheap.
How the hell did taking it apart explain to us mere mortals, the actual Design Flaw, I thought perhaps it was the spring loading that holds the pin in the keyway of the sliding part to begin with, But on Trev's video he slaps it, and then just slides it open, so the springs would have returned to their original position by then, Cmon LPL, you don't normally leave us hanging like this.
I think you're more or less correct. But it's hard to say without poking the little retainer springs. It's possible that once you get the little latch open it locks open until you relock it.
I suspect the physics of it work like this: there are some springs exerting force on some kind of locking bar or ball bearing that holds the shackle closed. When you strike it, inertia causes the bearings to compress the spring, and if the shackle is not horizontal, it just slides a little, preventing the spring from returning the bearing to the locked position and you can just slide the shackle out. If the lock was hanging so the shackle was horizontal, and you hit it on the bottom, it may not open so easily... but turn it a little bit and it becomes trivial. That's my guess. I'd also guess the engineers who designed it are like so many people with their cryptography... "I use 34295857 bit crypto, the NSA would need more money than is in the universe to crack my hard drive and find my MLP porn.." .../ or they need a couple of free willow switches and a couple of dudes to beat you with them until you give up the keys... but nobody thinks about that one.
@@anothersquid "34295857 bit crypto" That's not a power of two. So it's not going to happen. It's not even divisible by 8, which it would be if it was a "bit" key. Also, there are some people out there that will literally take their secrets to their grave. No matter how tortured they are. The engineers thought of practicality, not security. The lock should operate smoothly at all times. But real security engineers think like the thief and also employ thieves (white hats) to attack their security. The engineers simply don't understand the criminal mindset.
Straight-up laughed my head off at how strong the pick resistance is compared to the "workaround." Just amazing to see a lock that's probably in, like, the top 10 locks LPL ever opened be defeated by a flaw so bad that a literal baby could probably open it by accident.

As soon as McNally is mentioned, I know the fate of that poor lock. Say no more, LPL!
Worth checking out!!!!😅😅😅
That custom pick is very pretty.
@@anothersquid "34295857 bit crypto"
That's not a power of two.
@@anothersquid It looks like the production team went for cheap springs to cut costs without telling the naive design team they will be doing so.
The poppet springs are too weak. I know. Guess why. Hint: i used another lock to test it.
I laughed way to hard at Trevor's video 😁
Hahaaa!! Trevor’s video cracked me up
Straight-up laughed my head off at how strong the pick resistance is compared to the "workaround."
Just amazing to see a lock that's probably in, like, the top 10 locks LPL ever opened be defeated by a flaw so bad that a literal baby could probably open it by accident.
