  • What is the difference between deck mud and fat mud? Although tilesetters in California use fat and deck mud, many workers from other parts of the United States are not familiar with the differences. This is not an exhaustive discussion on the uses of each type of mud, as I have other videos that explain in detail how each type is used.

    Shower float days are my favorite, hawk n trowel , mud stand, 12 bags fat ,5 deck put on some good music and go. I really don’t care what new product the industry comes out with, I’ll always float my showers.

    Hi Isaac. Thanks for all the great videos. We're redoing our main bathroom and are tiling from floor to ceiling on all 4 walls. Do you still float a mortar bed on all 4 walls when you do similar projects or is it a combination of backer board and mortar?

    QUESTION:
    Drypack is used for swimming pools. How can it cure with the hardness it needs to, when so little water is added? The strength in concrete is a chemical bond, requiring the precise amount of water. Does the loose packing enable a bit of 'breathability'? Seems like this would be good for a shower floor, in that if there were a leak, it could pass through the dry-pack better than if it was just dense mortar...

    Great idea👍
    Interesting that you’re using Quikrete, a 4:1 mix and mention Laticrete and Mapei, all 4:1 mix. In past I thought I’ve seen you use Dyna 710, which I believe is 5:1 mix. My guys prefer the Dyna and Sika-BMI which is also a 5:1 mix. When we’ve had supply issues during pandemic, they’ve even mixed their own but finding a really consistent fine sand can be difficult. The higher sand ratio makes a more workable product in our experience.
    Thanks for the garbage bag tip, I’ll share with my tile crew.

    Isaac, would you suggest deck mud for leveling a slab foundation? I used 2800# of VINYL CONCRETE PATCHER on 1000sqr foot since it would go feather edge for Vinyl plank flooring. There were roller coaster when you walked around the house. Screeded each room, followed by hand grinding high spots. Was not impressed with floor leveler, cost and it did not actually level in a test room. Deck mud looks way easier to screed with limited grinding high points.

    • @casualbillionaire
      @casualbillionaire Před rokem +1

      I have this issue. Concrete patcher is not recomended for large areas. Can't imagine laying down a complete floor of fat mud, that would be a nightmare. Deck mud for the deep areas then concrete resurfacer for the final 1/4"

    Ive had problems with the dyna crete deck mud. When it dries the next day when i put my sheet membrane down the small grains of sand can poke holes in my membrane. Is there a way to make that not happen. I do flat trowel it with water at the end. Is there a better product to use to get a smoother finish on top?

    hello need your help..
    I have a bathroom floor 8 x 9 with tiles. I want to remove the tile and replace it with new. 24 x 24..
    should I remove the the mud floor with steal mesh and add new 7/8 inch plywood and then retile? or is it better to leave the old mud and remove the old tile and
    install new 24 x 24 tiles on top of the old mud floor.. basically what's best remove the mud floor and replace it with 7/8 plywood?

      Just leave the old mud as it can provide support for your new floor. If you do a tear out it’s going to be tons of work and money for the same result. Yw. 😉

      Get a job with a experienced tile guy and work for at least 6 months to a year. Trust me I tried doing the same thing and ended up backtracking and doing that. I consider myself a great worker and take lots of pride in my work. Even though I am a very intelligent guy and a quick learner taking on the tile jobs, especially shower tile jobs, is a completely different beast in itself and hard to perfect from just starting out.

    Can you use deck mud to support a fiberglass tub that is already installed? I have access to the front and back of the tub with access panels. It's sitting on feet about 5" off the concrete slab with wood shims underneath. But it's creaking when you stand in it. Also considering Great Stuff Big Gap Foam. Thoughts?
