      @@bjornzexi535 Nah man, I'll admit that I'm a huuge Mar-Vell fanboy, but I think that he's still the best character who ever used the Captain Marvel moniker (apart from Billy Batson and the Marvel family, of course, I'm still pissed at how they changed his name to Shazam). Mar-Vell was an alien war hero who fell in love with Earth and his inhabitants, and decided to betray his own race to defend his adoctive planet, the one he was supposed to invade. Kinda like Marvel's Goku, right? Plus, even before he obtained vast cosmic powers, he always managed to hold his own against those enemies wo far exceeded his power, like the Thing, The Hulk or even Thanos, by using strategy and tactics, and died one of the most heart-breaking deaths of any comic book character: he didn't died on the battlefield, heroically sacridicing himself against some cosmic tyrant, he died from cancer, accepting his inevitable fate and with his dearest friends by his side, obtaining respect from his historical enemies like Thanos and the Skrulls. His death is also one of the few in comics which can really be considered meaningful and definitive: hell'never return from the dead like almost any other comic book character, because he died of cancer, of a real disease which kills people in the real world. That's why he's the greatest Captain Marvel in my opinion. Carol Danvers, although doesn't deserve all the hate she's receiving in this period, has been stripped of everything that made her interesting in the first place, like his struggle with alcoholism. Modern authors in every media tend to write her as this flawless, perfect hero and try to make her as important as the X-Men or Spiderman or the Fantastic Four, yet she constantly get his ass kicked and is now starting to assume villain roles like in Civil War II. As for Monica Rambeau, I haven't read much about her, so I can't really say

      @@Keithchan2024 There really wasn't anything to fix. Both the video and these comments went on the perception/assumption that Monica was or was going to be a sidekick to Carol but that's not what the movie is showing.
      The movie is about Carol Danvers. They payed tribute to another "Captain Marvel" as a little nod, but they didn't have to since in the comics Monica's history and powers were never related to other Captain Marvels, she just chose the same moniker. Basically they could have left her out entirely but instead payed tribute to her and I'll take it.
      It'd be the same to say that it's "disrespectful" how they relegated the original Human Torch to an easter egg in Captain America, despite him being the original Marvel superhero and coming before Cap. You understand that the story is not about him so you take that acknowledgment as a fun nod.
      I'm not saying anything about the quality of the movie as a whole, but Monica's appearance was nothing bad in my opinion.

    I imagine the Ant-Man movies being a great template to follow if DC finally decides to fast-track that Blue Beetle movie. I'd have Jaime Reyes (the third Blue Beetle) be the main character while Ted Kord (the second one) mentors him, kinda like the DC Rebirth run of BB. You can even have an homage to Dan Garret (the first one), with being Ted's own mentor and friend. Granted, I'm still uneasy with DC's movie efforts unlike Marvel, but still.

The quippy, girl-power female lead is becoming a trope that in my opinion demeans women, not resembling how most woman would act in those same scenarios

    • @DianaGohan
      @DianaGohan Před 3 lety +2

      @@Raymal100 Honestly I think we are due for more movies starring female heroes with much bigger flaws and actual problems and arcs to get through that can be as troubled and messed up as any guy's hero journey. This is especially true after Mulan 2020 which though not as bad as other Disney remakes does make it clear that even if Hollywood finally is more fine giving female heroes their own action movies isn't letting them develop their own personas and problems like they should. This is especially ironic because honestly a lot of shows nowadays even ones for kid get giving their female character flaws and issues and problems to work on to make them better people. Amphibia Infinity Train, Owl House etc. Weird how movies have yet to catch up to that.

    • @Raymal100
      @Raymal100 Před 3 lety +1

      @@DianaGohan It would be boring if stories about female leads weren't explored more.
      I think that at least when it comes to movies the budget dictates the choices concerning how they portray women compared to tv. Shows generally have some wiggle room if the pilot is approved and if they are still writing as the season airs. They have a chance to develop the character in another way that might develop more viewership. Movies have one shot to do what they need. "Strong female character" is their safest bet given the bias of film journalism.
      It's funny too how closely "strong female characters" behave in more traditionally masculine or manly ways (not that they can't ever, it's more complex generally). It reinforces a patriarchal understanding of strength despite the claims of being "feminists."
      Wonder Woman did a fairly good job of developing Diana as a real strong female character who is also an individual with flaws and development.

    The REAL problem with Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, she established YEARS ago in the comics that she never wanted the name bcuz she didn't want to be in his shadow; hence she chose Ms. Marvel. What Marvel Comics NEEDS to do is reveal that the Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel is a impostor, maybe a Skrull, and that the REAL Carol is STILL Ms. Marvel locked away somewhere, maybe a Skrull ship, and Kamala's Ms. Marvel discovers this, frees her and the two overthrow the evil Captain Carol. Real Carol resumes being Ms. Marvel and Kamala, who took the name Ms. Marvel without actually EARNING it, now has to make a new name for herself while Monica Rambeau resumes the moniker on Captain Marvel since FAKE Carol stole it from her in the first place.

He'd wanted to do the film for years and because it was him, an A-List, beloved director, they let him be possessive over it, to the point of Joss Whedon having to take Hank and Janet out of his Avengers plans. She'd be their first female led super hero movie, she's a black woman as well so they have another black main character on top of T-Challa and because she has nothing to do with the Kree and was entirely her own thing, there was no mantle for her to earn as well. Hell, I remember rumors where Captain Marvel was going to defeat Thanos and if it was Monica that would actually make more sense. Correct me if I am wrong but her powers is that she not only absorbs energy, she also becomes that energy and can use it in battle too. At one point in Avengers vs Justice League she drains Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern ring and is able to use that energy for herself. With this in mind, I can easily see her getting a hold of the Infinity Gauntlet, absorbing its energy and essentially becoming a human Infinity Gauntlet to battle Thanos with the real gauntlet. I would have accepted that and that would have been bad ass. Instead we get the 7th Captain Marvel, started out as a love interest for the original, most infamous story is her getting mind controlled and kidnapped by a dude from another dimension who makes her give birth to him and in both Civil War comics she was a shit head who happily arrests people without trials for nothing. They chose the blond haired, blue eyed white fascist Captain Marvel over the first black woman to join and lead the Avengers, and they want to act like it was a progressive move. Also there desire to remove every male rolemodel for the movie not only removed Mar-Vell, it also took Monica's father away too. According to one YTer called Youngrippa, Monica in the comics has a good relationship with her father and admires him...yet Marvel didn't add that in. Surely that would be empowering, right? Isn't it a big stereotype of black fathers being absent and black mothers having to raise their kids alone? So not only did they skip over her for a white woman and make her idolize a white woman, they made her story fall more in line with a stereotype. Only woke Marvel could do this, they retcon Ice Man to be gay then make him a stereotype and this is apparently not the first time they've done this so I can believe their half assed attempts at being woke ending up more offensive than they wanted.

      Because Monica has zero actual connection to the Kree. She just had the name for a short time and mainly because Marvel needed to push out another Captain Marvel comic and didn't want to rename Mrs Marvel into Captain Marvel at this point. You can just as well take Jessica Drew and say "okay, that's Captain Marvel now". This is not just about scoring diversity points, it is about doing what makes sense.

If they aren't going to do something interesting with them then why even use the one that has the connection? And I think it was for Diversity points considering they made such a big deal about her being a woman. Remember that the trailer had 'Her' before an O faded in to make it "Hero". It was all about woke points, so Monica seemed like the more logical choice for that.

      Carol is about as interesting and a lot more popular around the time the decision was made.
      The point about monica's powers is true, but carol has energy absorption powers which she can absorb to redirect or amp her strength. She doesn't turn into energy like Monica, but she's connected to a White Hole/singularity and has more gravity powers, ability to make black holes and access to larger spectrums of energy instead of just electromagnetic. Carol can basically swallow a sun and has better energy absorption overall.
      With monica there's no actual conflicts. There's no lore you can tie her to. There's very little she has to overcome in the comics except her fear of water which came after she lost her avengers leadership in 294. Her parents love her and give her all the support. The avengers respect her right away and eventually give her the avengers Leadership.
      Carol also has more personal conflicts in her story, like dealing with an abusive dad and overcoming sexism both in her personal life and in the military. When she got her powers in the comics she was split into 2 beings with DID and it contrasted her humanity with the kree personality which she overcame and had to deal with a bloodthirsty side. Even the story of rape became a story of neglect on the avenger's part. Her identity getting sucked out by rogue became a sad tale of her having all of her memories but none of the emotions. All of these led to an incredible battle with addiction/alcohol and redemption in Kang Dynasty.
      And Civil War 1, there was a law that was passed but even the movie version didn't have trials anyway... mainly because trials are about proving innocence but if you weren't registered there wasn't much doubt as to why (but some like speedball got trials). The aftermath also was basically a commentary on police brutality and overreaches of authority. It was an amazing arc for her to go from arresting people for breaking the law to letting them go at every turn. (and monica was right there with carol in Civil war II arresting people for no reason so whatever but that whole story is terrible anyway)
      Also while monica did lead the avengers, you may as well say monica's most infamous story is NEXTWAVE where she's a Z-list has been who's a completely bitter shithead (good book though, great character too) or how she lost her avengers leadership in 15 issues flat.

    My main problem with CM is that Carol Never struggles. Never faces an enemy that is too hard for her and never faces any situation that is too difficult for her psyche to handle.
    It takes 10 minutes to turn from a fanatic Kree Lieutenant to the Skrull savior. I mean why would she believe anything her enemy told her while holding her best friend hostage?
    She has no growth, nothing. I usually complain when a movie arc does a "circle" where stuff happened and is happening but in the end nothing changed and nothing got added in (for example The secondary plot of the Last Jedi) But Captain Marvel is worse than a circle, it is a "dot". The whole movie does nothing to her character.
    Superheroes are interesting because they visualize the every man's problems. They allow our depression and misfortune of our lives take shape as villains who the heroes fight!
    Karol in the movie captain marvel faces nothing. There isn't any challenge that takes her less than 3 minutes to clear. I understand that she is powerful and no enemy can stand to her.
    Thor in Thor 1 trashes the destroyer easily when he gets his powers back. But the movie is interesting because we saw Thor grow as a character and learn humility. Villians can be powerless
    and still be threatening Ozymandias was a just a man but he won in Watchmen despite facing a being which calling it a god doesn't do it justice.
    How I would fix Captain Marvel?
    Well I would have her not believe the skrull leader and pretend that she joins him. Only to betray him and all his people thinking that they are an invading force. She rushes in the Fortress and there she kills some Skrulls only to find out that the Skrull leader is correct. Then the rest of the movie can continue as normal with Karol realizing the mess she made and now she has to make up for it. Her "Am I the bad guy?" moment. That would be way better than what we got.

We also saw this in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes where she is introduced and is way more powerful than the rest of the team (though thankfully she didn't render them pointless) and I really don't get why of all the female characters who could have been picked for the MCU, she was the one they were interested in.
    From what I have read, there were plans to give Carol Danvers her own movie for a long time but Ike Perlmutter kept getting in the way. It feels like this was something somebody wanted to make for Phase 1 or early Phase 2, it got pushed back and nobody brought it up to the standards of Phase 3. Or possibly the problem is that well, since there wasn't much to do with Carol from the comics, nobody had any idea what to do with her personality wise. MCU Hank Pym is still a jerk like his comic counterpart but his worst traits are played down, him being a jerk is fun to watch but the sequel emphasized because he is such a jerk almost nobody can stand him. Carol doesn't have the downright villainous actions of her comic counterpart, but that doesn't leave her with much else.

    Kind of the sad thing is, at least in regards to the comics, Carol might be the last good legacy character we may ever get. I have three guidelines for what tends to make for a good legacy character (based off the Wally West Flash).
    1. The successor is someone who has a long history with the original. Check. Carol has been a part of Mar-Vel's history for a significant number of years, both in-universe and out.
    2. The original's departure from the role was done with respect. Check. Mar-Vel's death was a tragedy but he's still remembered as a hero and when Carol eventually took up the mantle it was done out of respect for her old mentor and friend.
    3. The mantle pass is intended by the company to be a permanent change. Check. Marvel and Disney want Captain Marvel to basically be their Wonder Woman. They're not undoing the change anytime soon.
    Like I said, these are guidelines, not necessarily requirements. Jaime Reyes and Miles Morales had nothing to do with either character before they took up the mantles of Blue Beetle and Spider-Man but they still ended up working out pretty well in the end anyway, in part because they paid so much respect to the people who came before them.
    Carol might be the last good legacy character we get because Marvel and DC seem to have no interest in permanent legacy passes anymore. Most of the time it's either cheap gimmicks meant to get people talking or part of a single storyline and the original is always brought back within a couple of years, and fans tend to be exited about that because the way the original is shuffled off is rarely respectful or anything they'd want the character they love so much to go out on.

    I loved the Ant-Man films especially the first one ..
    But even looking at these clips I can’t really remember much of Captain Marvel just that I was very underwhelmed leaving the cinema ...

    Carol Danvers when not being pulled down by her awful rape storyline was one of my favourite DC heroines and I loved her particular powerset in the video games where she plays Ms.Marvel...now while her taking on the Captain Marvel name wasn't a bad idea nor was the change from skimpy iconic costume to kinda generic militaristic one that bad... her character shift to short haired psycho Feminazi really fucked up her character and the love I used to have for her(Civil War 2 was the worst I've seen and that only because I dropped any related media with this version of Carol since reading it). I'd say the Captain Marvel perfectly encapsulates the version of 616 Carol that Civil War 2 and the story's that followed portrayed her to be and the actress Brie Larson has proved once again that Marvel is fantastic at picking actors who embody the character they are chosen to play( RBDJ as Stark, all of the Chris's as their respective characters, and so on) honestly I hated the movie but oddly was satisfied with the casting of Brie as the Captain Marvel Carol, even though I dislike both Brie Larson as a person and Captain Marvel as a character.

    Are you aware that, if you do the math, by the time of Avengers: Endgame, Carol is 51-56 years old? I guess age-defying immortality is also one of her powers now?

    Part of the problem is Marvel tried everything for Carol, they changed her too much I lost track what the hell she is in beginning. In the end nobody cared about her. Still her best remembered positive era is mid 2000s Ms.Marvel era. She is not Marvel's Wonder Woman, she is not feminist icon, she is not an inspiring hero, Marvel tried all of them but failed and she is still remembered for that infamous Avengers issue.

    • @MrSafior
      @MrSafior Před 4 lety +1

      She's a feminist Icon, she even start being a journalist for a feminist journal in her first solo séries.
      People should stop associate feminism with loony on twitter, that just make one dimensional jerk who is afraid of women.
