I would argue its less about "Diversity" that's killing Marvel, and more the reskinning of successful characters and IP's under the guise of "Diversity" to monetise on "untapped" demographics.
They don't wanna risk making a *New* black/gay/trans/"insert what you wish here" character when they can capitalise on a existing characters popularity and make a quick dollar off of those who feel under-represented, instead of creating new, fleshed out, interesting characters.

Miles Morales and Black Panther are the only comic characters I’ve identified with on a race level. Marvel used the guise of diversity to shield themselves from criticism of boring or uninteresting characters. Having more POC, LGBTQ+, and female representation is not and should never be a bad thing but if the characters lack any qualities that make them unique/interesting besides the ones they were born, there’s gonna be a problem.

It's funny you bring up the X-Men female characters. Being a long term fan of X-Men, I can't help but be extremely skeptical at all the cries of "diversity" and modern comics being "progressive", since I've seen better written and less blunt examples of these things for decades. You won't find any other team book with a wider, naturally created pool of diverse characters in comics. Such is the point of the allegory of Mutants, after all. Everyone has representation in X-Men
I saw a recent review online of a Ms. Marvel book, wherein a fan was declaring what a great, "unique" and progressive step she was towards diversity. I pointed out X-Men already had at least two high profile muslim characters within the past 20-30 years (M in Generation X and Dusk in New X-Men). Combined with the fact she effectively has Mr Fantastic's powerset, there is very little at all in Ms. Marvel that hasn't been done before.
15:25 Exactly what X-Men has been doing since the 70's. Other than Jubilee, virtually every female X-Man, from Jean Grey to Storm to Rogue, has been nearly unstoppable at their peak.

Oh they said why thor lost his hammer and its dumb.... really dumb... yah know what I'm explaining it... the story.
Thor lost his hammer because he whispered "Gorr was right" meaning to thor "no god is worthy". So many things is wrong with that whole thing,
    1. Why would Thor care? - he leaves Asgard on a regular bases and helps save earth plenty of times over, but some how he consider himself unworthy because Gorr says so.
    2. Mystery- At first I thought the whisper was some secret magic Asgardian language that only the gods could understand or something, which would make more sense. But because they told me, its far worst then the speculation.
    3. Jane Foster worthy- This is the worst part because it has so many holes, how did she get to the hammer with cancer(it was on the moon)? Isn't there anyone else far more deserving then Jane? And why is she worthy, is it because of the cancer? Does Cancer make you auto-worthy? I assume from the writing that because she so STRONG to not accept magic as a cure for her cancer because... it has a price or something. But is completely compelled to use the magical hammer that resets her chemotherapy every time she uses it. "I must be thor, its the only way" type of garbage.
    4. She never told Thor until very late in the issue because... I don't know, something about not making him feel bad. Which he already felt bad anyway to the point of ditching his birth name with the hammer.
    5. War Thor- Now as much as I liked War thor after they showed him, But before we were all jazzed to finally see Thor... Odinson eh. Finally get a hammer back and become not just thor but the best thor with the most power hammer in existence. Only to blueball everyone and make him use it once and say its not mine though **shrug**.

Considering that there are female norse gods, as well as other 'entities' such as the Valkyries, they should have, instead of trying to replace an existing male character with a female, one that is generally 'used a lot' in Marvel, that they instead conjure a new heroine akin to Thor that is based on an existing norse goddess or entities such as the Valkyries...

  • @TheTsugnawmi2010

Jane Foster could EASILY have been her own hero on the level of Thor. Have her die from her cancer and be dragged to Hel (because her relationship with Thor makes her applicable for the Norse afterlife). There, you just redo the World War Hulk story-line crossed with Dante's Inferno. Sorted. Jane returns to life with Fire magic (to offset the icy cold of Hel) and healing (since she's a doctor) and becomes a Norse Phoenix heroine who uses a spear/staff. Her armour can look like Thor's because he was her frame of reference for a hero, but past that the two are distinct from each other. Easy!

When Marvel revealed that Ben Riley was "The true son of Mary and Richard Parker" and had him replace Peter as Spider-Man, it was met with backlash. There was nothing wrong with Ben Riley as a character, on the contrary, when he became Scarlet Spider alongside Peter as Spider-Man, he was great! It was the fact that Ben was supposed to replace Peter that annoyed people - and Ben wasn't even a minority being pandered to, as a clone of Peter, he was another straight, white, cis-male - now the exact same thing is happening, and apparently Marvel don't have the wherewithal to open their eyes and realise "hey, this is the same that happened with the backlash about Ben Riley" and instead are blaming sales losses on the fact that a lot of characters are minorities. No. It's because you're replacing beloved characters that have been around for decades with random new characters no one knows about! See, this sort of thing is why I'm an advocate of the sidekick trope; it allows a new character to be brought in alongside existing characters, allow them time to get the audience invested in them and then get their own book once an audience know who they are. In DC, when Wally West replaced Barry Allen as The Flash, that wasn't some new guy coming out of the blue, it was Barry's former protege taking up his mantle after his death - and as a result, that's something that was more readily accepted. If Riri Williams had spent a few years training under Tony Stark and using the Iron Man tech, and then replacing him at a later date even if it were temporary, I'd bet people would be more accepting of that. But no, the only sidekick that the big-two bother maintaining is Robin and even then, that's probably because it's become more of a tradition than anything. I personally think that Marvel or DC should try brining in a sidekick other than Robin, it'd give them someone who potentially could replace their mentor later on with less trouble than is being had with characrs just appearing out of nowhere, AND it'd give the existing characters someone new to work with which in and of itself could open up a lot more potential for new stories! Or... y'know... they could keep crowbarring in new characters to completley replace the old ones and blaming the subsequent failures on diversity....

It could even be as simple as John Diggle in Arrow - a guy who helps out in any way he's needed and who can fill in if the main hero isn't available. Riri could be a fresh young mind who Tony sees potential in and takes under his wing, and who gives some suggestions for Tony to implement into his suit. Then, Tony is taken out of action by whatever Thanos-related event they'll inevitably do to tie in to the Infinity War films, allowing Riri to take over for a couple years.

Whereas Tony is now the AI and mentors to Riri who took his name. So to me, it feels like Tony is still in the room and this no name just stole his name and armor.

But the way Bruce was killed was a fecking insult. Arrow to the head because he might go on a rampage.
Hulk was a hero! But Marvel did everything they could to ruin him and Banner.
I think the flaw of Marvel comics is the same as DC. The shared universe. It always confused me why Mutants were hated and feared in a world that had super powered types as heroes. They have done better in their own world.

My problem with stories that make us choose a side is that they never bother to give us a legit reason for it. I don't like taking sides especially when both sides or multiples sides are wrong or they are doing questionable things. Choosing sides is something that has to be chosen carefully, and both sides have to give a good reason to be chosen.
Unfortunately most of the time neither side has given us a legit reason to choose them. Which is why I refuse to choose a side since no one has given me a reason for it. This is why I remain neutral about the Alliance and the Horde from World of Warcraft or Marvel Civil War 2 or the Real Life. The only time I choose a side was in Marvel Civil War 1.

Captain Marvel has never popular, rather infamous...very, VERY infamous. She's had her own series rebooted 12 times within the last few years, and her being the villain is, unfortunately, a lot closer to her character than most people think. Not helping her case is her actress in the MCU (Brie Larson) is one of the most insufferable people in the film industry.

Maybe better in my honest opinion because following Civil War there was A LOT of hero v hero in Marvel.

  • @jlwest23

Thor was deemed unworthy for a stupid reason which they revealed and I laughed as " He was right". Also Marvel has way too many books out so of course sales drop and even more so with the " World Shattering Events stuff" as take the avengers you have the Avengers book which is farther in the future than now, then you the Occupy Avengers, AIM, Uncanny Avengers, Greal Lake Avengers and I think one more so in total 6 different Avengers books. Then you had for over a year the X-men vs Inhumans nonsense which was subtle then ramp up to have an easy conclusion to now having 5 different X-men books on the way. Then Marvel lets writers like Bendis come in and does whatever he wants only for him to leave and have other writers come in and fix his messes he had done over the years. Finally its not that Marvel has a diversity problem its that they forget about a lot of characters that were created only to at times bring them back just to killed or make shallow attempts to replace existing characters with a poor writing and art team behind them.

When bucky becomes cap it makes sense because he's his sidekick and has a very similar skill set to the original and bucky lacks a superhero identity of his own so it's all good but when Sam does it it feels wrong, Sam already has his own identity and he's one of the most progressive heros out there (I'm fairly certain he was on of the first black heros without the word "black" in his name) but they took his individuality away for the sake of having a black captain america

As a matter of fact real friends did resort to punching and fighting each other in our own Civil War (my dad has studied the Civil War so he would probably debunk you ten times over) so the argument that real people don't do this is moot. I haven't followed the comics since Spider-man One More Day but I can say that Civil War isn't bad but it isn't good either. In my last comment I said that I agreed with a lot of Linkara's points but I didn't agree with everything. Maria Hill jumping the gun on Cap before the registration act was a smart choice because it reminded me of a story of one of Lincon's lieutenants who once he heard that General Lee wouldn't help him pursue the confederates said that he should have been shot on the spot. Our government does this kind of thing all the time, they will make you dance to their tune whether you want to or not. The pro reg side recruiting super villains to hunt down the anti reg side is no different than the federals recruiting mercenaries to fight the confederates who probably had done as many awful things as these super villains. Keep in mind that I stopped following the comics because of the ending to Civil War as well which was like the writers saying "Cap loses because the pro reg side is working for the government, you wouldn't rebel against your government would you?" which made me sick.
