When street fighter is doing a better job at preserving the past then mortal kombat you know something is horribly horribly wrong. You would think that we would have gone like a collection for the original 3 games on modern platforms as well as the 3D games from that particular time period but no we still just have the newer titles and even half of them are not available to everywhere. And it sucks because Shaolin monks is a really really good spin-off title but yet it stuck on the PS2. And with the guest characters being more and more of a thing in later entries it's just gonna make trying to preserve the newer games even more of a problem. I'm glad we've been getting all these mega man collections because otherwise it would have been like mortal kombat.

Ultraman went through this too, the showa era as the classic era, Ultraman Tiga starting the expansion by starting over in a new universe, with the next few series taking place in their own (with the exception of Dyna which directly follows Tiga) and then Mebius is simultaneously the end of the expansion era and the begining of the retro era, which would eventually lead to the New Generation Era Super Sentai I feel is a curious case which this _should've_ happened, but the line isn't certain

The best way one can put it is: Things end because they have a purpose. Once they have accomplished that purpose, they cease. If that purpose can be reused from another perspective, it becomes a new purpose, and breathes new life. After that purpose has been reiterated again, and again, and again, swallowed and spat back out, it begins to lose sight of that purpose, and it becomes senseless, without aim. Because it cannot be allowed to end.

Midway was also awful for collections of the original trilogy on the 6th Gen Mk2 and 3 were on Midway Treasures 2 but in order to play Mk1 you needed the special edition of MK Deception And Ultimate 3 was only by having the special edition steel book of MK Armageddon Fuck at least Street Fighter has a decent collection

New collections would be amazing but its been years and nothing has come from us asking Until then ill have... Mk1,2,3 digital on PS3 as well as SNES ports Mk4,5,6,7 on PS2 MkDC and MK9 on PS3 And Mk10,11,12 on PS5

I don't think MK should be about time travel and alternate realities. That should be left for other IPs. It might have been fun to have it being the focus in one game for a change, but it becoming the new identity of the series is imo a mistake. Especially when their time travel concepts after 9 are so messy, underdeveloped, lazy and not thought out at all.

I've seen a lot of franchises go through this exact cycle, Star Wars and Sonic are the only two here I follow (I know next to nothing about Mortal Kombat, and as far as I'm concerned, there were only ever two Terminator movies). One franchise I like that has this in spades is Pokemon, with Gen 1 and 2 to be the "Classic" era, Gens 3-5 being the "Expansion Era", and Gen 6 afterwards being the "Retro" era, which is especially prevalent in anything made after 2016, namely Pokemon Go and Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. Some would argue it's slowly getting out of this phase with Gen 9, but that has yet to be seen. And then you have Mega Man, which is in a weird spot as they spread themselves too thin, then the creator of the franchise left and they cancelled everything, and other than re-releases, the only game they have released since then, Mega Man 11, was in the "Retro" category, though some might say MM9 and 10 were that with their 8-bit aesthetic.

The segment about fatalities not looking quite right also applies to entire characters. Triborg, we don't know if he's supposed to be completely mechanical or not due to having organs. Various fatalities like Kotal drinking a heart's blood become hilarious when done on a Xenomorph with acid blood.

That's still half, Fire Emblem has it much worse. The funniest part is that Fire Emblem Engage has characters from previous games as the Emblems representing lords and some major characters from previous games... most of which you can't play outside of emulation - FE1-6 and 12 were never released internationally, 7-11 were physical only, while, 13-15 became physical only once 3DS E-Shop was closed (which also made all their downloadable content unavailable). The only other game you can purchase without a hassle with all the dlcs is FE16 (Three Houses). So yeah, Nintendo complains about emulation, while giving 0 fucks about game preservation. I know it doesn't justify MK games being so unavailable, but damn, I wish FE had half.

The leaps I need to go to, to get armageddon are way to high where I can't play the MK game I have the most interest in. I need a PS2 emulator, controller and a working rom which is avalible on some abandonware sites but also u download at your own risk seriously the fact that microsoft of all companies allowed the age of empires team to remaster the older games but WB isn't letting netherrealm (or worse neatherealm has no interest) is honestly fucking terrible fuck this terrible level of game preservatio.

I actually had this conversation with my son, but on the capcom vs series. Telling him all the marvel crossovers, tekken, tatsunoko, snk vs games are pretty much locked on old hardware or delisted etc. Bloody tragic 😢

To this day I’ll never understand why WB and NRS didn’t allow Microsoft to make the OG Xbox MK games backwards compatible. They could have tried to enhance those games without NRS and WB needing to do anything other than agree.

I have the GOG version of MK Trilogy, and I can tell you it is just the PS1 version of the game. I personally wanted to play the N64 version, but I guess that's what emulation is for.

Snake's revenge is genuinely a decent NES title and it's the only reason the metal gear franchise exists because the dev asked kojima to make another sequel his way. don't talk crap about stuff you've never played. my estimation of you has absolutely plummeted.

"Most of them are trash" I want to disagree with this but most of the games are either not that great or are widely debated on if they're good or not...maybe it'd be easier for people to come to their own conclusions if we had ways to actually play some of these games

I think the arcade collection being purchasable on the 360 store is a half truth. Bought it maybe 2 years ago there and it REFUSED to download past 77%, and when I talked to a rep they said something to the effect of I shouldn't have been able to buy it

It's a damn shame! MK is one of my all-time favorite franchises, but with the lack of direction or respect for its roots, I won't be subscribing to any future installments. M1K was the only reason I got a ps5 & I feel I wasted my money at this point. 11 had a lot issues but at least it still felt like MK, now it feels like something else cosplaying as MK. Such wasted potential!

im not going to lie, the franchise im very fond of im feeling seems to be at risk of somewhat doing this thing is FNAF. While the story is painfully cryptic, one of the main issues that people have (and depending on how certain theories pan out, will have), the series will be skipping RIGHT to phase three rather than going through the middle stage. Mainly due to the series first major antagonist's downfall still having so many questions about it, that IF it is confirmed he has comeback rather than just have soul hoodoo voodoo crap being done on a sentient AI, it will likely show the franchise's unwillingness to let old stories end and new ones be written.

All the more reason to hang onto your old copies.
