Rusty's 10 Best Hollow Knight Charms

- Rusty ranks his 10 favorite Hollow Knight charms, and how they can be used! Due to recent COPPA guidelines, Rusty has been finding great difficulty striking a viable balance between not being too vulgar so as to alienate new viewers, and also not being tame enough to accumulate pesky FTC fines. Experts say his psyche is breaking at the seams. But not even our best, most talented analysts could decipher whatever that intro was...
In short, we're all doomed.

Honestly this list would be almost just like mine if dashmaster was replaced with sharp shadow. I just *love* that extra dash length and chip damage, it makes pure vessel and some other bosses much easier imo.
What improvement looks like: going from the "Grubsong, lifeblood core, quick focus" trio to the "unbreakable strength, quick slash, mark of pride" trio, sometimes featuring Steady body too.
100% the most entertaining hollow knight video I've watched. Subscribed and now gonna binge your other hollow knight vids
Mate, just from the intro, you got a new sub
Great video! However, I must say:
Quick Focus is actually a little better than you let on. I found that even in fast-paced fights like Pure Vessel, NKG, and AbsRad, Quick Focus let me regain that little extra tidbit of health that I needed to survive the battle. Personally, I feel that it is in the top three charms on my personal list.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on Mark of Pride being insane. You pretty much can’t do anything if you can’t hit your enemies. Easy top 3.
Same with Shaman Stone, spot 4-5.
A charm I felt should be on this list was Sharp Shadow. This charm is either instant win or instant loss, so I can see why you cut it out, but since I always find myself spamming the shit out of Shadow Cloak to dodge enemy attacks, I usually think: Hey, why don’t I slap on Sharp Shadow? The extra hit it does is just very useful, and the only problems I have with this charm is that the extra dash length makes parkour pretty much impossible and often leads me to dashing through a boss’s attack into the boss.
Another underrated charm is Dream Wielder. It can be extremely useful with most pretty much any boss you can get soul from dream nailing, as well as with not dying while exploring.
Surprisingly, ignoring all the memes, Gathering Swarm is one of the best exploration charms, allowing for a lot of saved time and geo from killing enemies, opening chests, and breaking deposits.
Obligatory Wayward Compass joke
Now... it’s paragraph time!!!
Personally, I feel like Quick Slash is overrated. It is pretty overpowered for basic enemies and chonky bosses, yes, but most of the difficult bosses move so fast that Quick Slash won’t even give you that much bonus damage. For example, in the Mantis Lords fight, when a Mantis Lord throws their boomerang thingies, you can hit them 3 times in a row normally. Quick Slash extends this to 4 hits, granting you an extra 33.3% damage, whereas Strength will give you a total extra 50% damage, because that is how it do be. With Troupe Master and Nightmare King, the same problem shows up, as even with Quick Slash it is near impossible to hit Grimm more than once or twice per attack, barely increasing your damage. Shaman Stone, too in most situations can give you insane added damage. In the mantis lords fight, why walk up to a Lord and smack them with your nail when you can just Yeet two Vengeful Spirits at them, dealing 4 times as much damage? Why dodge all of Grimm’s attacks when you can just spam desolate dive and abyss shriek and - oh, he’s dead. My point is, although Quick Slash is a good charm, Strength is just as good, and if you’re good enough to not die, or willing to grind out the 15K geo it takes to unbreakify it, then it always trumps out Quick Slash in any nail build. Bosses like the Brooding Mawlek and Flukemarm that just let you smack the infection outta them are not as common as one might think, as there are many small and nimble opponents such as Hornet that Strength or Shaman Stone help you far better with.
Keep in mind, this is my personal opinion. The way I treat these charms revolves around my play style, and my experience with Hollow Knight. Every charm (Except for Heavy Blow) is great in its own way, and has at least one great use in specific situations. With that being said,
Ciao.
Quick focus made all the difference for me when fighting NKG

Good video. Some constructive criticism would be to show more comparisons, like the difference in time with the quick focus charm, for instance. You could show side by side video of focusing with and without the charm. Seeing the two juxtaposed would really hammer home why these charms are so helpful in my opinion. Overall, very enjoyable video.
Dash master is my favorite charm in the game. The MOMENT I put this thing on I was suddenly flying across the map, running circles around bosses and just generally having a way smoother time. It’s even better combined with Sharp shadow and Sprint master

Back to me
I love Mark of Pride - I’ve essentially permanently equipped it - but there are some areas of the Path of Pain that are actually easier without MoP
Oi
I feel an honorable mention is gathering swarm. It cuts out one of the most tedious parts of playing the game, taking a few seconds to get all dropped geo for only 1 slot. Not to mention when geo dropped on the spikes or places you don't want to bother going. Out of the countless bugs you slaughter how much of that time do you spend going around getting the geo you so desire? Definitely not a combat worthy charm but a must-have for farming and general exploration for me.
I didn’t use it for the whole game and I bought tat every store easily early anyway
This is the same reasoning rusty has in his okayest charms vid
The sheer reliability of Sharp Shadow makes it hard to beat for me. Most of the toughest pantheon battles require me to dash around frequently so I end up chipping off tons of health with the charm, sometimes saving me a good minute of time. Plus it's visually one of the coolest charms.
I use no spells. So Sharp shadow, quick slash, mark of pride, and unbreakable strength is OP.
@@KaroxNightshade I'm still learning to make more use of spells on my fourth playthrough of the game. The invincibility frames on Descending Dark feel very useful.
I've just been obliterating since I got all of them. I killed radiance 1st try with that setup. But if you use spells, abyss shriek is a bit OP too. My only used spell.
Should we really listen to someone that said Sprintmaster, spore shroom, and defender`s crest useless in one of his previous video?
Rusty shouldn’t get hate, it should be me instead
Dat Intro was incredible dude
I’m not a big Spell person myself, but Shaman Stone is addicting, especially paired with Spell Twister. Your spell projectiles get a larger hitbox, and deal significantly more damage.
I was just casually grinding on the Colosseum of Fools and i upgraded my Fragile Strength to Unbreakable, and i also went to the Nailsmith to upgrade from Channeled Nail to the Spiral Nail (i dont remember what its called) and... wow. When i went into that second trial i pretty much devoured every enemy in my line of sight within seconds.
But yeah, Wayward Compass
I once was a Mark of Pride user like you, but then I took an Quick Slash to the build.
Ive never seen him pump out videos this fast
4:24 dashmaster the charm that makes you go faster, aka: *S A N S*
I can't act like I've done this, but I've heard that the Grubberfly Elegy is amazing for Radiant bosses because of the fact that you're either at full health or dead. And the projectile length of the Elegy is longer than the nail length of the MOP
4:30 no disagreements, I agree that dashmaster is a great charm, especially in the early game with less options to move around quicker, as well as increasing sharp shadow's damage. My only gripe with it is accidentally dashing downwards instead of striking downwards, effectively dashing into a saw blade- but even that can be mitigated if you just get good, and don't mistakenly dash downwards when you don't want to.
I need just that POSITIVITY intro as its own video, something that I can endlessly and easily loop for my own amusement.
I used the shamans stone to fight twk and yeah it helped a lot more than I thought it could
I always use: quick focus, quick slash, mark of pride and sharp shadow
ive been chewing through your content recently since discovering this game a month ago, and goddamn, this was funny coz i was just thinking "rusty used to love this game"
"Soul Catcher can and probably will be the first charm you pick up"
Me: *Laughs in Fury (of the Fallen)*
7:59
But like strength, quick slash, mark of pride, and long nail fits perfectly and I will never stop being a nail player
For me, because I tend to take combat more cautiously and fight at the absolute maximum strike distance, Quick Slash never really felt worth it because in the time it takes to walk back into melee you miss your window for extra attacks. Pairing it with Steady Body could work, I suppose, but even then most higher-rank bosses barely give you the time to get in a single hit let alone multiple.
When I want to go for a melee build, I typically combine Unbreakable Strength and Nailmaster's Glory along with Mark of Pride. Gives you the chance to deal serious damage with a nail art or at least a heavy single hit.
If you have the charm slots for it, use mark of pride and long nail together, bc it actually does stack
This is so great. I'm about to beat this game again and the pantheon of hallownest again.
I spent like 40 minutes on the 4 for fights. The first 39 were my with my standard build stuck on the first fight, and the last 10 being me with all damage and nail charms taking him down in less time then it took me to start the fight.
1:05
Literaly nothing:
Rusty: I LOVE YOU
UB Heart should have been on here. Paired with any type of soul/heal upgrade it extends fights to the point that it can allow you win ones where you would’ve died halfway through.
My end game build is quick focus, shape of unn, fragile/unbreakable strength, quick slash. Quick focus drains through soul, quick slash gives crazy soul, quick slash and strength get extra damage, shape of unn allows for healing at any time especially with quick focus. Everything works together for the perfect aggressive build. If this sounds dumb, I beat pantheon of hallownest twice in a row with this. Shape of unn is an underrated gem that allows you to heal even during abs rad.
I keep coming back to this video for that intro alone LOL
