2 Years with a Modded Nintendo Switch - Worth It?

  • Over the past two years my interest in the Switch has come and gone, and come back plenty of times. Currently with the great games coming out this holiday season for it, I'm very excited about the console and have been playing it quite a bit.
    The combination of the Switchs great games in addition to the many retroarch cores a modded Switch can use make handheld and console hybrid a perfect piece of gaming history. However if you strictly want a box to play retro games, the Xbox Series S is the way to go if you are buying something new off the shelf.

    Been thinking about modding my Switch, but have been hesitant given I have a modded PS VITA that basically emulates everything I need to play already. I like the idea of backing up my physical media, and I also am intrigued by playing with Lakka on the device. Thanks for your perspective.

      Hey I’ve been thinking about buying a ps vita or v1 switch to mod, it seems like the vita would be the easier choice but I’m not sure

    • @BrianJones-wk8cx
      @BrianJones-wk8cx Před rokem +1

      @@CastjAviEr1 honestly, since last we left our heroes, I hacked my Switch and kind of love it. The hacking process feels much simpler on the Switch, but I can’t speak to pricing and availability if you don’t already have either device. I would imagine it would be easier and cheaper to get your hands on a Vita, and if you do, check out the recent tutorial by Retro Game Corp here on CZcams for a comprehensive and excellent walk through on that process. The Switch is a bigger screen, but an OLED Vita is a better screen. The Switch can comfortably emulate N64 with a slight overclock, the Vita can only run a handful of N64 games. The Vita is more portable and the hacking/homebrew scene is much more active than what I have seen in the Switch. Both can run anything below N64 pretty well, and I go back and forth on which I prefer depending upon the moment. If I had to pick only one, I’d probably go Switch, but that’s only because I have both already. If I had to buy one now, I’d probably go Vita. I don’t know if that lends any additional perspective, but I wanted to at least share my thoughts in case they did help out. Happy to answer any specific questions if you have them as well.

      the best answer is to have both, I use both but recently the switch more for exclusives. Althought i'll admit my modded vita has given me 0 problems since day 1, about 10 years now i guess?? But my first modded switch died after about a 1.5 years (power problems) , recently bought one on ebay and it works great but the docking doesn't work so no tv play for me ;( but i've heard if it turns into a power issue and its not the usb c port you're pretty much screwed. I think the vitas are built much better plus that OLED screen vs the v1 switches but thats just my own experience with it. I just personally think its better to have two V1 switches incase one dies at least you can mod the 2nd one after

I had mine listed on ebay and it had many bids and was removed as counterfeit just moments before the end of the auction. And of course they will ban you if you relist that item. And then attempting to sell on CL is a major pain because most people are flakes and the people willing to consider buying back out when they find out that they actually have to learn a few things about how to use the console and get games on it.

    I have modded almost every console thats moddable, I can actually tell you if its worth it or not, its a double sided coin, on one side theres the fact that you can get games for free on it, you can get any emulator you want for it and its enjoyable to do, but on the opposite side it ruins the value of said games you pirate, the emulators aren't very good because why would anyone play a snes or n64 game on a switch when you can play actual switch games, eventually you just want the original hardware, another thing is that when you're pirating games it devalues them, you don't value them as much because you got them for free, don't want to play them as much because you can just horde games until you run out of space so you don't care about the games properly, when you actually buy a game you own it to some degree and can hold it and you value it because it cost you something, I'd say its up to you but there are negatives none of these videos ever mention, oh and theres NO ONLINE at all with the pirated games for any console and any console you hack you can usually not play online with unless its a ps vita or you use some sketchy workarounds that don't always work and theres still risk

    So what I've gathered is that the big (maybe only benefit) is to the game backups and RetroArch for emulation.
    (Which doesn't even cover much wider an array of consoles than a PSP or PSVita does... not with acceptable playable framerates.)
    Considering your honesty about GameCube and Wii, PS2 probably hardly runs just the same. So in the end unless you're looking to steal games... I can only see one big benefit outside of backups here. Custom Themes. Which admittedly, interests me... but if I have to do all of this crap just for that and even risk bans/console damage then it seems silly.
    Actually... the rigged joycon might be the most useful piece. Just in case you need to fix a soft brick on these devices. Which is even greater than I'm thinking because that joycon would work on ANY Switch console for resets.
    Edit: Noticed some people agree. I use the Android side sometimes now- and occasionally boot Atmo to use my DS4. Truth is though, I rarely use the CFW side. Not worth risking a ban. I use sysmod and play online on my emmc. No emu shit. All the reading I did told me it was stupid to even prance around it carefully.
    I just do my thing and don't cheat or steal games. But really- I rather play my emulated retro games on my PSP when it's just me. The Switch is better for multiple players.
