- While Dorico will load sounds automatically from its installed sound libraries, this video shows you how to load any third-party VST 3 libraries you may own and assign them to your project's virtual instruments. You can also set up an external MIDI instrument to play your music. Finally, learn how to set your chord symbols to play back, using a sound of your choice.

2:53 Multiple VSTs firing simultaneously!!! Oh bless this day.
been using Sibelius for years but, after watching this very informative video, im going to try Dorico pro 2 now. thank you very much for the video
thank you Anthony, I switched from Finale to Dorico Pro 3.5 and your explanation for assigning the VST 3 instruments has been very helpful.
I bookmarked this page for further reference. Thank You again and God Bess
super-clear explanations of some quite complicated aspects. Thank you!
Privet Anthony. You are brilliant. Thank for the hard work you (and all you team) have done to provide the world with this amazing software!
Mikhail
Clear and Concise - Thanks . . . .
How wonderful !
fantastic tutorial, congratulations!
Very useful, thanks!
Really helpful. Thanks.
If I’m understanding correctly the difference between Sibelius and Dorico working with VST is that here one assigns instruments by loading a particular set for the score with matching channels, not an entire library into playback configurations first.
well if it really means the world to you - here it is - thumbs up
In regard to the part of your video where you talk about adding an external midi instrument; I purchased Dorico elements 3.5 a few days ago and I love the application, however I am experiencing a problem with the instrument sounds not playing correctly in my Yamaha CP 300 when receiving midi information from Dorico. Instead of the correct instrument sounds being activated when play mode is scrolling, I get a piano sound from every note being played.
The drum sounds in the keyboard are playing correctly because I was able to configure that in the play mode under midi instruments in the endpoint set up for the keyboard. The vst HALion sounds are working just fine, but I would like to be able to also work with the other sounds that are in my keyboard. I do not see any place where I can put in data regarding LSB or MSB or any other information regarding program numbers or banks such as 0 or 127 as I have had to do when I used to use Encore. I went onto the Dorico forum, but the best answer that I got was :
“I’m not sure you can control the sounds of your device remotely - through Dorico. These are informations you should find in your device user guide.”
I have looked through the guide but have not found anything relating to my situation. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I have a problem, maybe someone can help me here. So my standard Halion SE plugin does not work when I open a new project. It works with other premade projects by the company but not with selfmade projects. So i assigned my east west vst plugins. The only problem is, I only have 16 channels but need sounds for a full orchestra, which has about 32 individual instruments. Is there a way to use several instruments on one channel so that both instruments can play independently? Thanks!
@Dorico I'm limited to only changing 16 instruments but I have 19. How do I upload the sound to my last 3 instruments if it only let's me dona max of 16?
Dorico has been very cool finally. but also I would recomand the one thing. very important.
Dorico must include this funtion or feature. It is grid Warp Grid. It's most important feature ever. cubase has this. real music require this warp grid or flexible grid. and this feature only has cuabse in the world.
Okay and how about a tutorial for Dorico 4
I would like to now if there exists downloadable epr.maps for famous sounds / libraries such as VSL or EstWest etc. Can I use the same maps I created in Cubase in Dorico?
Yes, you can import and then edit Expression maps from Cubase.
Looks so great... but I don't understand why it's not included in the Cubase Product... it looks quite similar - except no production stuff is in it (audio etc.).Would be so great to have Dorico and Cubase together...
Hi - many users of notation programs would find Cubase too confusing when they just want to work in notation and they wouldn't need e.g. multitrack audio recording. We are aiming to improve the Dorico - Cubase workflow though in the future for people who want the best of both worlds.
@@dorico Just became a full-time Cubase user AND Dorico user. I watched the Alan Silvestri video and saw how he was starting to integrate both programs. I know this is coming and please know you have a bunch of us waiting. Great job!!
Is there a Dorico 4.3 update for how to add VST sounds?
Not yet, although it's basically the same as in previous versions but it's all on the left now instead of on the right.
I have recently updated to Dorico 4 and bought Kontact with a couple of their instruments to try out. Unfortunately I simply can't seem to make this work. I have my composition, I have chosen Kontact as my VST, I have chosen the appropriate Channel for Guitar and Piano Port: 1 Ch: 1 & 2. The correct sound plays when I audition using the onscreen Piano. But when I play back my piece the library sound doesn't play. I have been using Spitfires BBCSO Core library and I have managed to get that to work. I know others are using Kontact happily. Am I going mad or have I not done something obvious?
Have you mapped each instrument to the Kontakt instance on the correct MIDI channel? For BBCSO there is a playback template available to do this for you: blog.dorico.com/2020/07/spitfire-bbc-symphony-orchestra-templates/
My 2.2 Dorico doesn't show this option and I don't hear anything when typing notes. I open up a new project with horns for example but nothing is being played back. When I go to the "play" section and select the symphonic orchestra, it load strings and not horns. How do I make so that when loading the big band template, the correct sounds will load automatically?
To load the default sounds in Dorico you shouldn't need to do anything other than choose some instruments in Setup mode, but you can reset the sounds in Play mode from the Play > Playback template option - choose HSSE+HSO and then press 'ok' and it'll re-load all the right sounds. If that doesn't happen then I would reinstall both Playback 1 and Playback 2 from the Dorico section of the Steinberg Download Assistant (www.steinberg.net/sda) or please get in touch with support for more details and assistance: www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
If you already made a score and you want to change the library to a new one that is not from Dorico, how you make it worked because, I just got East West Sound library and Dorico is not recognizing it. Please advise.
You'll need some expression maps or a playback template for East West. Try our playback templates page and see if there are some for starters: blog.dorico.com/playback-templates/
The East West sound Voices of Opera in not there.
I have Hollywood Orchestra Diamond Edition. Does that Sound Library play on Dorico?
I don't know of a playback template for that library yet, so you'd need to create one or start by importing some Cubase expression maps.
@@dorico, thank you.
Hello, I am try to use now Cubase AI, I am new at this, I have my Midi file that I made in Dorico pro, but now that I download it, the libraries I use I can not hear them. I have try many thing and seen lots of videos is there a simple video to show to import the library and set it in your midi file.
I was able to set the ALion Sonic SE in my midi file, how I really did it I do not know, but when I try to add to another part the East West sound library, the other one dissapears. Thank you for any help and advise.
To add additional sample libraries such as East West, you need to click on the '+' icon in the RH panel in Play mode to add another item to your rack, then you can assign the new one as well as keeping Halion. You might want to email support from your My Steinberg account or ask on the forum if you have more questions about this: www.steinberg.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=246
OK, thank you so much. have a nice day.
Am on iMac Catalina, Dorico 3.5, when I change from plugin headphones back to built in speakers, there is silence. I need to go 'Device Setup/ Device Control Panel' then reselect the "iMac Speakers" for the , despite the setting stating . I got to the very end of Anthony's most informative video (still no playback) and in desperation opened the tab to the device control panel. Voila
Sorry does not show underlined text '...... for the output, despite the setting stating configure automatically.'
You can set up an aggregate device in your Macs Audio MIDI Setup and include both headphones and built-in speakers and then it should switch more easily.
Hello I am using the instruments from HALion Sonic SE, but for some reason is changing what I choose, how can I solve this problem. I am also using instruments from EastWest Sound and they are OK. Thank you.
Dorico will only change the instruments if you reset the playback template. If you manually change an instrument then Dorico will let you make your own changes.
@@dorico Thank you dor your help. Now is ok. I have another question, I exported my score ones to Midi file and it worked fine. But now for some reason does not work, it says Error saving file, I also try to export as Audio and start loanding but does no finish the download. Please advise. Thank you.
@@feigasiedler3979 I think we'd need to see the file to see what is happening. Can you please get in touch with our support team by raising a ticket here: www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
Can we do this on ipad too?
If you have other AUv3 instruments that you want to use, yes
OK, But Now (ver 5) is all different, is not any more possible to assign instruments at players in play section. Why?
You can still assign instruments/sounds. The VST rack is now on the left in Play mode instead of the right (in v3.5 and earlier).
Nothing works out of the gate for me. I have managed to make 1 instrument actually have sound. Wish it would just play the instruments without me having to fix this out, not sure if it's glitching/broken or just me. Weird. I kinda hate it.
Hi Bret. The default HALion sounds should work without any configuration. If you are looking to use your own sounds then please get in touch with our support team with details of your OS and which library you are looking to use. You can get in touch with them from your MySteinberg account here: www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
No one including Steinberg knows how to get 3rd party VST's especially Percussion/Drums to work properly with Dorico !
I personally use Presonus Notion and it works brilliantly out of the box and the price is a fraction of the overpriced Dorico !!
@@tobbebergman7583 that's not true. I've even done a template for Virtual Drumline. If you have any issues with Dorico, please let us know, but if Notion does what you need then you're happy?
@@dorico
Oh but it is true !
But then Steinberg hasn't really been Steinberg since Yamaha bought them in 2005 which explains why !
It is possible to synchronize Dorico with one
midi keyboard? (I have a Komplete from Native Instruments)
I would like to use the play, rec and stop keys
and others work with Dorico directly from
midi keyboard of mine....
It will depend which MIDI notes your keyboard sends, but yes you can map MIDI commands to functions in Dorico in the Preferences > Key Commands section
@@dorico I tried but it seems like a forcing.
The play button stops and restarts
correctly while recording cannot
be stopped. It is just possible
to stop playback.
Dorico maps only play, stop and rec.
In this case the software has many
limitations. Using the function keys
on my midi keyboard is essential for
working fast and producing more.
@@ilmonello1969 it should be possible to stop it. Which key command did you map to? Maybe get in touch with support and they can check for you? www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1 CZcams isn't the best mode of communication for this sort of question, sorry.
@@dorico play / stop, ok;
rec / stop is not possible.
the stop key ONLY stops playback and not recording.
Considering that 1 midi key manages only 1 PC event, perhaps the solution is to assign the PC space bar key to the stop key.
But I don't know where to find this event on the list.
I mean the space bar key only.
In my opinion it would be right to improve this area of the software.
The PC mouse, when working with music, must be touched very little.
The metronome is not mapped. Sure, I could assign the C key of the first octave but it seems crazy to me.
@@ilmonello1969 SpaceBar does normally stop playback, so I'm not sure why it doesn't on your machine - I suggest getting in touch with support as it's not easy to diagnose here: www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
No expression maps in Dorico 5. What now?
They are in the Library menu now.
thank you @@dorico
Why dont you tell us where to put the third party VST libraries?
It is really up to the 3rd party manufacturers where they have their libraries installed and in some cases people install them on external hard drives too. If you need help with this though, either contact the library manufacturer, or our support team by raising a ticket from your MySteinberg account and let us know which library you have and if you are on Mac or PC etc - www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
Love the software but this is pretty outdated. I would love an up to date tutorial
There are some newer ones, depending on exactly what you are looking for.
Seems incledibly fiddly - I wish library manufacturers would make them so that they would slot in to Dorico or Sibelius automatically - like NotePerformer - which is quite good - apart from the strings!
Compared to the way Sibelius integrates VST plugins (or doesn't), this is genius! In order to get my VSTs to work, I had to purchase a third party "soundset" for my particular VST (each VST has it's own purchasable soundset). In this case, I wanted to use Kontakt in Sibelius. Now every time I want to use Kontakt sounds instead of the abysmal Generic MIDI library, I need to use a specific score template, a specific house rule, specifically match the soundset name to each instrument I want to use AND create a new bank/preset of instruments every time I want to add or remove anything... and that isn't even all of the steps, JUST to get even a half way decent sound in playback.
Two things: First, to use two similar sounding horns was a bad idea. Second, I've watched this video 3 times and its still not clear what a slot is and how you direct an instrument to it.
Each slot is a midi channel
Assign your own sounds to instruments in Dorico | Play Mode in Dorico That's the name of this video tutorial????? Is that what this video is about???? and then he says he'll say it in another video, which he never did? I'm very disappointed. I've been wasting time for more than a month and I can't use East West Sound Voices of Opera in Dorico 4. They explain a thousand things and nothing concrete. They should make tutorials short, simple and easy to understand, we are composers not sound engineers.
