Ethiopia and Somalia
or...officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia
Two bordering countries in the Horn of Africa, which is the part of Africa that looks like, ya know, a horn. It’s not only a peninsula, but considered a geopolitical region, with around 140 million people.
Ethiopia and Somalia are the two largest countries in the Horn of Africa, along with Eritrea and Djibouti, which will likely be a future video for this series, by the way.
Which two African countries should I compare for this series next? Let me down below. Thanks for watching this motion picture.

@@iammrbeat Hi

You are Somali and you like this video!
The worst place to learn about anything relating to Somalia is a westerner/white person they literally lie intentionally and misrepresent anything Somalia or at best they copy and paste the talking points of their governments and spy agencies who has the interest of lying and smearing the country and the people. Never ever rely anyone of them to tell you about Somalia or it's people.
Great video! As an Italian, I had the opportunity to meet various Ethiopians and Somalis in Milan and try their amazing food, although Eritreans were more common.
Their food IS amazing. Thanks for the kind comment!
Many Somalis used to live in Italy but most migrated away. Hundreds of thousands of Italians migrated away from Somalia due to the war too
Where do you put the scale Italy when it comes to racism in Europe? Is it less or more racist than the rest of Europe?
The term "Ethiopian" doesn't refer to single groups. Millions of Somalis are found in Ethiopia. People who have origin in Eritrea and Mali also live in Ethiopia to.
@@sareeyemanusqaame8723 ngl I've heard some fucked up stuff coming from Italy. There are good and bad people there like in any other country, but just be warned their their racists are not "hidden" like in the U.S. Those bastards will definitely make it known.

Thank you for making this video! Very informative and well presented!!
Great video Mr. Beat!! Thank you as always for the great work you put out!!
Thank you for the relatively objective presentation. Particularly, I love the conclusion in which you recommended "both countries should work together". Afterall, Ethiopians, Eritreans, Somalis and Djibouti have so many things in common that can bring them together and form a one country with strong economy.
@@rory6860 You're right! But humanity comes first. After all, the great majority of people in these countries are followers of Abrahamic Religion (Christianity and Islam), and not Hinduism, Buddhism or any other religion. People in this region have so many common things (color of the skin, culture, psychology, world view, etc.). I remember when I was conducting my Masters and PH.D studies in Europe in the 70s and 80s, my country Ethiopia and Somalia were at war. Then my best friend was a Somali student called Abdulkadir and many other Somalis and Sudanis. Imagine, even war can't separate these people let alone religion. Cheers,
@@theoahmwa
Well said. And I like the optimism in your message. Unfortunately, we became fools that opted for non-ending war on each other. Horn of Africans share so many commonalities and yet have been a bunch of teenagers that continue to destroy one another. I hope we adopt your optimistic worldview. I am Ethiopian and yet an ethnic Somali. I grew up with both communities on either side of the border. And there is very little difference other than the misperception created by external powers who have and continue to use us in their proxy wars. We better begin to embrace each other. Otherwise, our demise will continue.
@@XalaalSomalis Thank you for your positive response. Let's hope that people of the Horn will one day come to their senses by reexamining the collective madness they are in. There is no one for us except us.

Ertrea is like Somaliland, took by the Portuguese Italians from the Ethiopia , reunification was impossible
@@rediettadesse2828 Eritrea (previously Amasen and part of imperial Ethiopia) was occupied and renamned by Italy, not Portugal. They ruled for 50 years but re-unification was not impossible because in the post Italian decades there was a strong pro-Ethiopia unification political movement in the colony. Political repression by HS and especially by Dergi is what produced a separation movement resulting in the establishment of Eritrea as a sovereign and independent country in 1993.

@@iammrbeat yea its really sad to see what happened to somalia. Once it used to be the strongest and richest country in africa, but now its a mess
Many countries have been or worse than Somalia and Ethiopia before so bad things happen sometimes but you move on that’s life.
At 12:55 I was so bummed you didn't bring up the Ethiopian Jews!!!!! I believe most have left for Israel but it's super fascinating that there was such a large and secluded Jewish population there and worth mentioning!
They also had their own kingdom in Ethiopia which was fighting against the Christian Axumite kingdom.
Many people including majority of Somalis themselves but Somalis have Jews also. They are very minority group who are discriminated against and their tribal label are "yibro/Yebrew".
Is Ethiopia really that secluded? Ethiopia is exactly the kind of place I would expect to have Jews. It's not that far from Israel (compared to, say, Spain or Russia), and I it's probably even mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, even if Sheba is actually Yemen, not Ethiopia. Without even looking it up, I would guess they probably had Jews in Ethiopia before Christianity and Islam even existed. Jews spread in all directions, particularly after the wars with the Romans, and thus ended up all over the region. I wouldn't except Ethiopia to be an exception. Also, I know Ethiopia has historically been accepting of Abrahamic religious minorities fleeing persecution, since the Christian Kingdom of Axum supposedly accepted some of the first Muslims fleeing persecution by polytheistic Arabs. Also, I think the Jews would have been fleeing the Romans around the same time Christianity was first reaching Ethiopia, and, given that Christianity is of Jewish origin, the two might even be related. The Jewish Kingdom of Simien/Beta Israel is interesting, though, since there haven't been many Jewish states. There HAVE been other officially Jewish states outside the Levant, though: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewish_states_and_dynasties , including for a long time in pre-Islamic Yemen.

Would’ve been interesting to hear a Mr. Beat explanation of Selassie’s bizarre role in the world of Rastafarianism
Perhaps in another video
@@iammrbeat Yeah, since Sallasie was Christian he never endorsed their claims of being the second coming of Christ but did not them making his name less obscure in the western world.
Saying all that is to deny the influence that both the emperor and the people who follow behind him has had on the past 80 years of human history.
In Ethiopia, he was almost worshipped. People prostrated themselves when they saw him. His titles were and usurpation of the titles given to Christ. No wonder the Rastafarians thought he was the second coming of Christ.
The rastafari movement has been mocked Jared and persecuted from its inception, but with all that it has done nothing more than grow and become more influential in the process of time so at the end of the day the only thing we can say is is only time and time alone will tell. Not just rastas are influenced by Alice Selassie pretty much every single country in Africa and their leadership in one way or the other have been influenced by him and the more we recognize is present in our time is the more we will appreciate the value of his work.

I've been researching our history for the past 10 years (all horn nations) and this was an excellent video. A few things I'd correct and add in here and there though but hey it's an esoteric and little researched part of the world and you got everything that would want to be known
Actually, the First Italo-Ethiopian War dragged on well into the 1890s. What finally put an end (for the time) on Italian hopes to conquer Ethiopia, was the 1896 Battle of Adowa, where black Africans for once was equipped with modern equipment, like bolt-action repeating rifles, and showed that if equipped to a similar standard, Africans could defeat Europeans.
Somalia, in the 1990s, had no government. That's how bad it was, and it was a state of affairs which held on until the Islamic Courts took power in 2007. A move which was swiftly nullified by a Western-backed Ethiopian invasion.
You added more information. Thank you.
@@iammrbeat Most of the rifles that equipped the Ethiopians were supplied by the Russian Empire because both countries were officially Ortbodox Christian.
On 7:44 Any resistance since 1936 was very minor and more akin to civilian guerilla activities and disobediance rather than military units refusing to surrender (which was mostly the case in late 1936 after the Italians took Addis Ababa). The Italian occupation of Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia (as the colony of Italian East Africa since much of Somalia was re-occupied) ended in 1941 primarily because of British Empire invasions (primarily by Indian, South African, and eastern African troops).

Somalia Has one of the Cheapest Internet data in the world, No.1 in Africa, and you are saying they dont have access to the internet. even you contradict your self by saying at 17:27 that telecommunication is one the biggest industries and seconds later at 18:46 "only 2% has access to the internet".
you made some mistakes but that was your biggest. also Somalis just accepted Islam, never was conquest.
Hello Mr Beat good content! 😁👍
Thank you and hello!
No problem good sir.
Good job thank you.......
Mr. Beat, you should do a video comparing Iran and Iraq.
Well I already compared Iran and Saudi Arabia
@@iammrbeat Fair enough.
@mr beat. Lil bit correction. Actually Somalia have the fastest and cheapest internet connection in Africa.
Can you do Indonesia and malaysia compared? (South east Asia)
Excelent Job I love Ethiopia thank you
You should compare Grand Rapids, Michigan and Asheville, North Carolina :)
You are the first person to ever, ever suggest that. :)
@@iammrbeat I just figured it would be interesting since they're kinda subregional "capitals" within their respective states
i am an Ethiopian and a huge fan of your channel Mr. Beat.
Ethiopia 🇪🇹 must recognize Somaliland and not that failed state
Have you ever had the chance to visit either country?
Nope, not yet. Have you been to Africa?
@@iammrbeat No, but it'd be interesting some day. My dad was there when he was in the Marines.
@@HistoryandHeadlines how many local people did he kill/murdered?
@@sareeyemanusqaame8723 None.
In the first part of the video of the arrow pointing to Djibouti was pointing to Somaliland
Personally, I would like to see you cover Djibouti. Most people know nothing about that country.
I don't know enough about Djibouti myself.
We are Somali 🇩🇯
@@SN-sm2ix but djiboutians(btw, is it djiboutis or djiboutians?) arent just somalis tho, they have different ethnicities there
@@mahersabit9265 The majority of people in Djibouti are ethnically Somali (70%), second are Afar (25%).. and other minorities like arabs.
@@mahersabit9265nah I’m from Djibouti 🇩🇯 and I’m Somali we are Somali 😂😂
I'm from Ethiopia
And when I visit there Most citizens have internet access its just really bad and the electricity and wifi goes out often
yeah the country needs better connection like it is super bad and it sucks. hopefully the new telecoms can help but idk
When are you gonna start doing challanges again
You made a mistake about the map of somali, where is ogaden region and NFD region
