Haiti and The Dominican Republic
The two countries that share the island of Hispaniola, the most populous island and second-largest island in the West Indies. What are the West Indies? Well, all these islands in or near the Caribbean Sea, for real. Because that Christopher Columbus dude, who was the first European to lead a voyage to the islands, thought he was near India when he first explored them, other Europeans began to call them the “West Indies” to distinguish the islands from India.
Anyway, Haiti is located on the western part of Hispaniola and The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern part of it. This 242-mile (391 km) border separates the two countries. Seen from space, this border is quite dramatic. On the Haitian side, you can see massive deforestation. On the Dominican side, forests remain.
While both countries have a lot in common, today a lot of people tend to focus on their many differences.

When the French arrived on the island of Santo Domingo in 1697, there was already a people (Dominicans), with language, religion, gastronomy, culture, towns, churches, roads, schools, monastery, and even a university. To anyone who is worried about the Dominican Republic and crime, tourist locations are completely safe (Punta Cana/Puerto Plata) but obviously don’t have 100k laying around in your open hands in the middle of the night (but that’s anywhere). Crime in general is only really seen in the big cities like the capital, but smaller pueblos/villages generally have low violent crime and at worst you’ll get some petty theft or something. It’s more so focused in certain places than spread equally throughout the country. Just use your head and you shouldn’t have any issues.
The tourist spots in the Dominican Republic are just as safe, if not more safer than tourist spots throughout the rest of the Americas.

Right now, the Dominican Republic is ahead of Haiti in practically everything. However, the Dominican Republic is still a developing economy and they still have a long way to go, but they are headed there. I'd like to see Haiti catch up to the Dominican Republic one day, it'll be a rough road but hopefully one day Haiti can achieve stability.

Haitians need to get their political system in order first before they can even begin to take off economically.
Great work. One thing I’d like to add…most videos comparing both countries always mention the massacre of the 30s from the DR to Haitians. This is sad and accurate. However, it should also be mentioned that Haiti invaded the DR 6 times while the DR never invaded Haiti. Not only did they do this, but they did it in a very gruesome way. One of the worst atrocities is called “degüello de moca”…degüello means beheading and Moca is a town in the north of DR. There are great videos on it but not sure if any are in English. Basically Haitians beheaded everyone in that town especially the white people…including women and children. This is something the DR govt purposely leaves out of elementary thru HS leaving it only to scholars and college level in order to avoid hate. I don’t justify xenophobia or mistreatment of Haitians but the tension between both countries lies especially in the history and it bothers me when people just chalk it up to pure “racism.” You did not do this and I thank you for that. You kept it objective…just wanted to give you that little piece of little known history even amongst Dominicans.
They don't dare mention these facts because it will hurt their reputation to speak the truth.
They would never mention that. Not one of these bozos that do these pieces for some reason, forget that part.
I’m from Moca and most people here know that history even if it’s not spoken much.
of course they wont you know the light skins are always the villans and the darker side are always gonna be the victim even though they killed and ran light skinned Dominicans out of the island when they invaded and ran the Dominican side for over 22 years but they never bring that up either they erase all that history its insane
Yes this may be very true. it’s important to learn history. There is still constant miss treatment that Haitians have to go through in DR and on the boarder In the present. Even if you travel legally the police still will hit you they will touch you inappropriately, swear at you etc. While Dominicans freely cross the border to go to Haiti an whenever they want. The many times I’ve cross the border I’ve seen this, and I’m not a hard-core victim of this because they considered me as American. When you speak English to them, they act differently.

In 1950, Haiti and the Dominican Republic had nearly identical rates of poverty and GDP per capita. But since then, the DR’s economy has grown tremendously while Haiti remains poor and underdeveloped. The gap between the two countries is now wider than ever
The people from this country were picked up from Senegal threw out Congo check out the poverty level of these countries it’s bad the reason they choose to stay and continue to occupy a territory that should be a Dominican territory. @@johnnymonestime3742 I doubt it
I’ve lived in haiit for most of my life, and am now studying in the Dominican Republic, living in both countries isn’t really different in terms of living expenses, however u seem to spend more money in Haiti, due to the lack of infrastructure (water, electricity, etc) u spend 5 times more everywhere just because the country doesn’t provide and everything is imported. The electricity is almost non existent in Haiti people run their properties on generators almost 24/7, water isn’t fed through pipes it’s brought to your house in a truck and put in a reservoir on property and all this really ramps up your spending. It’s not cheap either to pay these “basic” services.
But at the surface electricity bills on both sides of the island are similar except that one actually provides and the other just makes you pay a non existent service and you have to go out and buy gasoline for your generator instead
So THAT explains the confusion online about cost of living differences. This is fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing.
I went down to the comments specifically to find this one, thanks!

As a dominican, I admire Haitians' work habits. However, I always encouraged them to invest in DR and start business like other immigrants in DR do. If more Haitians become dominicans and act and think like dominicans, the Island could slowly become one nation. But, I also understand that Haitians might not want to succumb to the Dominican way of life and even less feel like they are under them (us).

Baseball is a huge economic driver for the Dominican Republic. Kid's are trained from a very early age to play the game. The player's that make it to the MLB send home a lot of money. The game has done a lot of good for the community. On the negative side.... A lot of kids never make it to the MLB. Those kids do not get a lot of education in anything else. All that they know how to do is play baseball.
Well put. It's comparable to inner city kids trying to make it as professional basketball players or rappers.
You can see the reason Dominicans are so good at baseball if you drive around the countryside. You will see very poor boys playing baseball without real equipment. The fielders have no gloves, so they learn to field the "ball" flawlessly. Often the ball itself is just tape rolled into a lumpy sphere, so it curves like crazy when pitched. Often the bat is just a broomstick, so you can imagine how they learn to bat so well hitting a drastically curving tape ball with a thin stick. When they are given proper equipment, they are awesome.
@@iammrbeat good comparison.

Dominicans and Haitians have entirely different demographic origins that set us apart we are not the same.
Dominicans are an admixed ethic group the result of Arawaks , Spanish and Africans they brought mixing.
The Haitian people are an Afro Franco ethnic group who were brought into the island by the French.
In 1625 the islands history splits into two:
Spanish side evolved into cattle ranching, meat and contraband. Major factor was Spain abandoning the Spanish side for three centuries. Slavery due to this was practically non existent. Spanish side as a result never had black codes or Jim crow laws. And had relax views towards mixing (taino and African maternal heritage in the Greater Antilles 2017).
The French side had an export economy based on slave labor. The Spanish stop importing enslaved people of African descent by the end of the 16th century. Whereas the French began importing towards the middle of the 17th century and continued this practice throughout the 18th century until 1791 when the revolution of the Haitian people began.
Dominicans have three independence:
Brief independence in 1821.
Independence from Haiti in 1844 (we have two historical manifestos explaining our separation which is rooted in social and economic reasons).
Haiti problems is multi factor with both internal and external factors.
Haiti and the Dominican Republic constitution is similar to Japan, rooted in ethic origins.
Both sides have complex histories.
Dominicans also have the right to protect and secure it's boarders.
My two cents.
This is going to be one of those long comments...
Dominican here. These countries are vastly different, in spite of their similarities.
The grudge between the two countries is still alive. Many Dominicans loathe and fear haitians for the 1821 invasion. Many Haitians still believe the island should be one.
Many Dominicans still have a strong sense of patriotism. Our national anthem sings about the independence from Haiti and about the death of our Founding Fathers in those battles.
Haiti's main religion is voodoo, not catholicism.
Creole and french in Haiti. Spanish in the Dominican Republic.
Haiti has A LOT OF ECONOMICAL PROBLEMS AND DEBT, A LOT. The Dominican Republic has plenty too. However both countries are mired in corruption. The Dominican Republic cannot unite with Haiti.
We cannot assimilate their poverty or their corrupt money thirsty leaders. We barely have enough to feed our own leeches. WE ARE A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY TOO. I don't know what indexes they use to point to a " growing economy", our gas prices are the highest in the region, food is expensive, the minimum wage is usd1.25 an hour. Cost of living is $650 without rent. We do not have the resources.
Violence and social instability is far worse in Haiti. Another reason Dominicans fear Haitians.
What if Russia bordered with the US? Would Americans fear them? That is called Xenophobia. I have heard some ignorants quote racism when they actually mean xenophobia. Xenophobia can also be between blacks and whites and vice versa.
I do not go around telling americans or the french what to do with their illegal immigrants. I respect those country's sovereignty, I expect fhe same.
Haitians are welcome here, if they come through the proper channels. Is the immigration system corrupt? Yes, like everything else here. Welcome to the DR. You come here, become a Dominican, pay your 28% tax like everyone else, abide by our laws, sing our national anthem (dunno how you're going to go about that), don't give us trouble, and all is good.
This idea of uniting with other countries and open border policies is childish. It's irrational foolish crap.
Exactly. I don't blame you. Haiti didn't turn out like Haiti for no reason. That was the most successful planter colony in the Western hemisphere; the Pearl of the Antilles. And they turned into a virtually barren hellscape, stripped the surrounding waters of fish...it's insane.
@@chriswhite3692 History is complicated. People always think poor means oppressed. They fought for their freedom. They won. They beat most of us here in the Americas. But once free, they failed to organize, plan, build a structure. Tribalism and slavery (because african tribes enslaved other tribes) were no longer a thing. So they would have to evolve into a political system they did not fully understand. Corruption followed. Violence too. Fast forward to 2023 and they are still struggling to break this cycle.
We had the same beginnings in the Dominican Republic. Except we had an averagely better education because there wasn't segregation. Our founding Fathers, mainly Juan Pablo Duarte, studied in Europe and longed for his country to be like European countries.
Yet we still struggle.
The thought of reuniting the DR with the country they literally became independent from makes my skin crawl. So our founder fathers fought for nothing? This is the most idiotic thing ever. Haiti and the DR don't even share a language ffs, how can you unite 2 vastly different cultures? The fact that people expect the DR to just "assume" Haití and all their issues is unfair and just ridiculously absurd
@@prezzlola Because Haitians have impregnated in their brain that their country's curse is our fault because we shared the same land, got colonized by 2 powerful countries yet only DR turned out to be prosperous and overcame poverty.
They lack so much knowledge from the history of their country, that they abstain themselves from hating the ones who took from them the most, France mostly, England, and the US.
Haitians could be white and blond haired, but if the circumstances were still the same (extreme poverty, violence, totally different cultures) we wouldn't open the border and unify the island. Dominicans can't take care of 10M people who've lived in extreme poverty their entire life and bring them into their 2/3 quarter of an island when we're not even a world power.
It would destroy our economy. Those are facts. But people are more kin on being morally superior, than reasonable.
Also, the chaos generated by uniting such culturally, religiously, socially and everything else different countries, is something which those pro-annexation people haven't deemed! We have to use common sense and not only utopian ideals to project an image of "diplomatic peace" among two nations that the only similar thing they possess is precisely the portion of land they share. We must remember the disputes that turning us into one single state may provoke, in both sides: Haitians won't like to be ruled by Dominicans and vice versa. Not everyone is willing to accept an agreement of that magnitude to happen, not without fighting fiercely first. In my opinion, whoever who proposes it as the most "viable" solution for the island, doesn't have a clue about how both work.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti would make a shared government, with two presidents? No, and I can't just imagine the riots and protests because of being governed by, for example, a Haitian president, Dominicans would get angry, and the same in the parallel case. In order to provide a possible alternative to the border crisis, we ought not to think in the problematic as we do related to other countries, this needs a lot of historical and geographic study beforehand.

If any foreigner (lets say a tourist or an illegal haitian) have a kid in DR, the Government will supply a “birth certificate for foreigners” this birth certificate is only valid to claim their parents citizenship at their embassy, therefore the constitucion explicits says if somebody is descendants of at least one Dominican parent they can claim DR citizenship, if not, is just another foreigner.

@@davidsantana9138 Haiti needs to take accountability for the self-inflicted harm that keeps being blamed on DR. Internationally, we are seen as a bunch racists that REFUSE to help Haiti solve its MANY issues. Sadly, some Haitians contribute to this discourse by continuously boicot DR for the simple reason that our country is doing better than theirs.
Now, tho DR is wealthier than Haiti, it is by no means a rich enough country to take in all of Haiti and continuously aid them in every single one of its problems BECAUSE WE HAVE MANY OF OUR OWN. We also have corruption eating away our country to the roots, it may be better than the other side but it is still bad over here. We need to deal with our issues first because Dominicans come first in DR.
Lastly, if the UN, US, Canada and all those other orgs and powerful countries (that are pressuring DR tho NOT inflict its immigration policies) actually cared about Haiti they would intervene themselves and not expect another poor country to come in and get everything fixed.

The DR is by no means a rich country, but I think calling it "one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere" seems a little too much, specially considering that below it you have countries like Nicaragua, Venezuela, Guatemala, Bolivia, El Salvador, Ecuador, etc in terms of gdp per capita. Of course when compared to countries like the US, Canada, and the Southern Cone, it's quite poor by comparison; but is it really appropiate to say "one of the poorest", specially considering it outperfoms a significant portion of the LAC region?
I think you're being nitpicky

this was interesting because honestly as an american we arent taught much about these countries in school at most we're shown one is poor and unstable and one is great for vacationing and finding good baseball players.

@Mr. Beat yes thank you and thanks for the links to other creators to watch more on the topic. my wife's friends husband is actually Haitian but moved here (southern New jersey) as a child, never talk much about history since every time I see him we spend the entire time talking about the goings on in the world of soccer.
Why would you be taught much about some of the most economically and strategically unimportant counties in global affairs in the American education system? I hate to break it to you but even in European schools very little is taught about these two countries as well
@@paul9299 Probably because of the human rights abuses and the illegal occupation of those countries? Luxembourg isn't very important for the global economy but you sure as hell will learn about it in German History during WWII because they illegally invaded it. That in it of itself is justification enough, and this whataboutism doesn't change the fact that the American Education system is incredibly americocentric.

Hi Mr. Beat! I'm a fan from the Dominican Republic. Thank you for making this video. As always greast stuff. You should come visit our country someday.
I would LOVE to visit.
Dominican republic has only one thing in common with Haiti, And it's that they share the same Island. Dominicans and Haitians are totally opposite of each other it's like oil and water they don't mix.
Very well explained about the two countries!
Thanks for the great video!
Just one detail: Christopher Columbus was looking for The Indies (not India), which is a much more generic concept. In particular was looking for the Islands of the Species, which is the Moluccas, in Indonesia
Video is GOOD/OK. But I don't really understand why every video about Haiti and DR finishes with this idea that both countries somehow should eventually be connected. Or that they have more in common than differences. That can literally apply to the entire world. We are all humans. We all have more in common than differences
I mean, there is far more in common between the United States and Canada and no one ever arrives at that conclusion when doing a fair comparison assessment between those countries.
Its hard to understand the low key obsession that the world has with a united D.R- Haiti when it has never been so. It makes no sense. Will Mexico and the USA ever be united? No
You are ignoring the overwhelming evidence that backs up the fact that open borders lead to more prosperity. Will Mexico and the USA ever be united? Yeah, I can see that happening. The border wall that currently exists between the two countries is only a few decades old. Their cultures are way more similar than you'd probably realize.
Having grown up in Dominican Republic, I can say you're 100% correct. Culturally we're very different, and every child gets taught in school about our war of independence against the Hatians. It's a matter of national pride. Plus, there's a bit of racism in there unfortunately, we will never see the island united.
@@iammrbeat LMAO, hold up. What evidence?
@@iammrbeat We Dominicans are open to more economic cooperation with Haiti and all nations but the idea of political unification as in giving up Dominican sovereignty and independence is unthinkable.
@@iammrbeat Open borders only exist in your head and is impossible as long as we live under a capitalist market economy. The capitalist market economy literally collapses if you have open borders. Modern nation-state exist in the modern world to separate markets and everything that it entails (labor laws, wages, standards, production, flow of capital, financing). Open border is a pipe-dream. Even countries of similar development do not have open borders among each other (See USA vs Canada which both protect their internal market).
Why would you suggest that such economically and socially divergent countries such as the Dominican Republic and Haiti should implement open borders? That would be crazy and suggest you have very little knowledge of how the modern economy works. No Dominican in their right mind would accept such punishment. The moment you open the border the working class dominican population will have to compete with poorer Haitians willing to do the same work for less.
as a Haitian who trace his lineage to two African tribes Hausa & Tikar. Haitians in general we have absolutely nothing in common with Dominicans but more in common with Africa, hence why we wanted to join the African Union
I had no idea about that!

Culturally we Haitians are very similar to Africans especially Nigerians but to say that we don't have culture in common with DR is a lie because so much of Dominican culture comes from Africa as well. Do you think Dominican dances came from Spain or their slaves?
@@danielgermain5572 Merengue is based on european ballroom dance. What makes you think is african?

22:28 not really. Nothing needs to be "connected" between the two nations anymore than it already is. Haitians we have our own culture, history, music, even language. Dominicans have all that too, minus the language. The only thing that needs to happen is for haitians to continue focusing on developing our own country and keep out foreign intervention. We have too many problems as a country right now to worry about lunch table drama with the DR.

As a Dominican I can say that this is a very well made video, very aligned with the History we have always been taught. In terms of the cost of living question I would say the DR is definitely higher. Due to the points you made about the economies, but also from experience I know the haitian migrants get paid a miniscule amount in Dominican standards but would happily(relatively) do the job becuase its high compared to what they could get and need to survive in Haiti. As to the "closeness" and similarities they are mostly geographical since every major category that would separate any two societies exists (culture, religion, language, etc) so we can definitely work on joining forces to make each individual society better and stronger, but I dont think there will ever be more "closeness" than that. I always pray to see Haiti as a prosperous country which will benefit everyone. Peace and love to all our hatian neighbors.

Indonesia is huge. Especially in population. 4th largest in the world. Maybe " compare" its huge size to different countries. For example if put over the US Indonesia stretches from beyond coast to coast. The island of Java has more people than ALL of russia. And Jakarta their capital has more people than their former colonial overlord has total population.

As a Dominican, I hope that Haiti and its people can unite and take the necessary steps to restore the country to its former glory. I would also love to see Haiti and its people prosper. I sincerely hope that both nations can find productive and positive methods to work together.
Fun fact: Toussaint L'Ouverture served as a General in the French Republican Army in Haiti after France abolished slavery there fighting against the Spanish and British, for more than a year he served as a General in the Spanish Army in Santo Domingo fighting against the French and British for Spain, then served as a General in the Armee Indiginee - the rebel army of former slaves and indigenous peoples fighting against the French, British and Spanish.
That's awesome that you went on Hoser lol!

Phenotypically, genetically, linguistically and culturally we are different. We practically have nothing in common. Where are your roots?? I mean where are you from?? Spain
@@bastianx8772 Actually, I am half Spanish and half Dominican (you would be surprised at the number of Dominicans like me, children of a foreign father/mother) but it is more than clear that Haitians have preserved more of their African roots; They have been cared for and passed down from generation to generation and also retain most of their physical features. and we Dominicans have segregated ourselves, that's why there are many mestizos here LIKE ME. and there is nothing wrong with that. what I said was not with bad intentions, it is simply the truth.

As a Nigerian, this video and history of Haiti makes me appreciate the fact that the British were the ones who colonized/created my country and not the French. Most former British colonies tend to do better socioeconomically and politically compared to French ones. The British had a habit of importing and imposing their political and economic and social ideals on their colonies which tended to help them after colonialism. Yes, my country still has issues aplenty but compared to many other countries here in Africa and like Haiti, we are so much better economically and socially and politically and getting better still.
I've noticed this as well.
@@iammrbeat it is a very common trend in much of world history. I'd love to see you and others, like h0ser, talk about it. For all the negatives the British had, their colonial history had more net positives than most. On major example being that they were among the first in most nations and empires to abolish slavery, especially where it existed before they came like in Africa. That's one of the reasons why even in my country, despite our issues, most of us have a very positive view of the British.
