This is doublespeak, no one addresses the elephant in the room. Tribalism, groupish and ignorance is the the mentality of most somali people, so it's no love lost between the two nations. The Shariah and justice is a prerequisite for peace for reconciliation of both nations. For now let's not fan the flame for war. This highlights China's robust engagement in these endeavors, I can assure you China is not missing on any deals there. lol
On the other hand, Ethiopia's actions is a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and the territorial integrity, and China has clearly expressed its disapproval by supporting Somalia in this matter.

For far too long, Ethiopians, and other Africans have been tirelessly working to bring peace and stability to Somalia since 1990. However, despite the people of Somaliland building an advanced democratic system and a state-like structure that offers great prospects for peaceful coexistence and cooperation with neighbors, they are still isolated from the international community, resulting in unnecessary suffering and bloodshed. It is time to recognize Somaliland's independence and grant them the recognition they deserve to fulfill their aspirations for statehood. The people of Somaliland are wise, forward-thinking, and well-versed in international diplomacy, and they can no longer wait indefinitely for peace and stability to prevail in the rest of Somalia. It is high time for the international community to support their progress and allow them to experience social and economic growth. Ethiopia on the other hand needs access to the sea to assure economic progress for its huge and expanding population of over 120 million which is vital for the regional stability.

By the way you are talking, you are probably Ethiopian and you don't know much about what you are talking about. If you really think Ethiopia can just get and have a sea port just like that your are not very intelligent. Do you know the history between the two countries? Do you know that Ethiopia have a very big region who is somalis who really don't wanna be part of Ethiopia more than somaliland don't wanna be part of somalia. Do you know that somalis hates Ethiopia more than any country on earth even the people of Somaliland who majority of them are against this agreement not only will somalia fight against Ethiopia, somaliland, Djibouti even the somali region in Ethiopia will fight Ethiopia and I mean every single one. The somalis that hate Ethiopia most are somali Ethiopians. So even if this agreement goes through. Are Ethiopia ready never ending war from every corner? Cause that's what's going to happen and this somaliland you are talking about doesn't exist. Somaliland have been in civil war last 11 months. A big part of it is gone back to Somalia and there is still a war another part which is where the sea port is located don't wanna be part of so call somaliland. If you say somaliland is a democracy you dont Jack shit it is a dictatorship. I am from there believe me I know. It's only one clan that always have the power since 1991 and everyone else is nothing to them. I don't know what will happen with this agreement but I know one thing and that is the horn of africa just started a never ending war. Somalia got nothing to lose, they have been in war last 40 years and Ethiopia is in a civil war as we speak and it just got worse

      O dear!
Regardless of our wisdom and whether it is a fact that countries were trying to help Somalia, where is the advanced democratic system that we have built? Do you know how many years our election is delayed? How many were killed in Hargaysa when they were demonstrating against this delay?
British Somali land is now 3 to 4 different states with 75% of them applying to be recognised by the Somali Federal Government as a member state. Do I need to name them? No for you, but for those you are misleading SSC-KHATUMO is already gone and is recognised by the government, Awdal state and Guban state (Gadabuursi and Issa tribes respectively) are already underway after Precedent Bihi's recent madness suggesting giving their land to Abey, and the forth within the Garhajis state if who are the majority sub tribe of Bihi's own tribe, but have been side lined for over a quarter of a century, if elections are not held ASAP.
Also where is the well-versed diplomacy? I have been monitoring the media around the world and found most of those who think SL differently to largely have false information such as democracy, peaceful, being different than other Somalis, abandoning the unity which they created willingly and having borders. Or is it exchanging ethiopian airplane revenue that could be at a loss with a quarter of the area of Somalia you are claiming!
The world would not even listen to you if they know that the reason you are signing that area for few handouts is that it belongs to Issa and Samaroon tribes not the main Isxaaq tribe!
Sorry for being tough on you, but take it as a brotherly slap to safe you from your own fulish actions that will result you being killed and your women owned by......
My massage to you and precedent Bihi is look inwards and ask our billionaires to start a better and more advanced Airline (call it Bihi airline if you wish) and ask them to give you 20, 30, 40, and even 49% without giving away our resources and bringing suffering to our families. It's worth considering the presence of military bases in Djibouti by countries like China, the USA, Japan, and others. Given that Ethiopia is a Horn of African country, would it be unreasonable for Ethiopia to have access to the sea and establish a military base in Somaliland? Ethiopia's intention is not to provoke conflict with its neighbors, but rather to seek peaceful access to the sea. Let's focus on the potential benefits of such access, rather than jumping to conclusions about war.

One very important fact in favior of such Somaliland-Ethiopia deal is the fact that unity of Somalia is not the same like the unity , for example , of Ghana or Kenya . Ghana or Kenya is not made up of two entities that recieved two seperate indepedences and the voluntarily united . Somaliland and Somali are two former seprate colnies that , after seprate independence , went into a failed union . So this two falling apart is not like Ghana falling apart. In fact an African Union fact-finding mission in 2005 declared that the of Somaliland is unique case , not a seceding region

None of the speakers have reiterated the unique historical fact of Somaliland javing been a different country that was granted Independence on 26/6/1960 by Britain and which united with the Italiaan Somaliland on 1st July,1960.
    Somaliland is not seceding frok
somalia Republic which ceased to exist in 1991 but withdrawing from a failed union that was not ratified by either of the parties.
The analysis by Mulongo is myopic and distortionist.
Recognition is apolitical decision vested with sovereign states.
Recognition of Somaliland does not open a pandora box because its based on colonial borders as at 1960 and the self determination and unique circumstances should be taken into account.

Dr Abiy’s government is playing with fire. Somalia and Ethiopia were at war in 1970s over the Ogaden region where Somali Ethnic people live within Ethiopia. Also in 2006 the TPLF regime under instructions by the US invaded Somalia and killed thousands of people and displaced millions. The TPLF regime also killed thousands of Somalis in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. These wounds are still raw and people are very angry with Ethiopia. if Ethiopia goes ahead with the plan Somalia will take military action against Ethiopia which is battling with internal conflict in the Oromo and Amhara regions. Egypt, Eritrea and Turkey are supporting Somalia. There could be serious consequences for Ethiopia here including the risk of disintegration and all out war just like what is happening in Sudan.

The determination of people must comes first without using war as a means of subjugation ,if there is unique historical background to be considered at this modern time. Africans must worry first how to grow mutually rather than promoting colonial agenda which might be emerged in different names this time.

Why do some educated individuals from Africa display such bewildering behavior, leaving me speechless? Was the international maritime law flawlessly crafted, considering African representation? Are these laws genuinely intended to benefit African nations? Let's acknowledge that all laws, whether international or local, have their flaws, so let's avoid idealizing them. Instead of dwelling on problems and adopting a pessimistic stance, my African brothers and sisters, let's actively contribute to solutions and maintain an optimistic outlook. While past mindsets may have deemed unity impossible for many African leaders and literate individuals, we should, at the very least, aim for cooperation, support, and peaceful coexistence to prosper together.

Facts: not to confuse Somaliland is not a part of Somalia-italiana.
Somaliland is not a clan based secessionist state far from it, Somaliland was established as
    a nation state on 26th June 1960,
    when it gained its independence
    from Great Britain.
    Its borders
have the same international status and legitimacy as those of
other African and Asian countries, which were drawn by European Colonial powers.
    In 1960 Somaliland went
    into “union” with Somalia-italiana.
    The
“union” was legally suspect under the international law:
    The people of Somaliland overwhelmingly
    rejected the Union Constitution
when it was put to a national referendum in 1961.
The “Union” was never legally ratified by the people
    of Somaliland.
    In 2001, in a national
referendum the people of Somaliland overwhelmingly approved
    the decision to re-establish their
sovereignty 97% For the Somaliland republic.
The people of Somaliland exercised their right to
    self-determination and brought to
an end the union of the two
    states

Many thanks all, especially Prof. David Onsireo for your rationally and morally viable analysis. Let's, we all Africans, solve our problems ourselves through peaceful mean as to avoid the external manipulation that kept us in a war cycle generations after generations. But one thing I can't pass by without mentioning is that the journalist seems to be so biased in which she tends to support Somalia side only. Oh, our people, you can't imagine for a country like Ethiopia with huge population and immense economic demand without access to the sea, that she even lost unfairly within the very recent years, 30yrs. We need to be as fair as we will be as to when the issues will be merely ours. Anyway, we need to stick to the principal saying, "Divided we fall, but United we stand!" The other is, I would love all of us to listen to Prof. Lumumba's wise speeches in this regards. Thanks!

Mr. Mulongo, where did you get from that Ethiopia declared to gain access to the Red Sea even by force?! You distorted what PM Dr. Abiy Ahmed said for some purpose, leave alone the signing of the MOU was a mutual peaceful agreement. Also, this panel doesn't discuss the reasons for the aspiration of Somaliland due to the massacre and genocide by the state of Somalia in 1980's. Where the world powers have occupied the eastern Africa with military bases and maritime control right on doorsteps of Ethiopia, why everyone is against the Ethiopian aspiration to gain back access to the Red Sea!?

Great reporting. Love the questions by anchor.
    My two cents...
    1. Somaliland gained its independence and recognition before Somalia.
    2. Somaliland is the one united with Somalia for the purpose of uniting all 5 Somalis.
    3. After the genocide JSL took back their unity from Somalia.
    4. Somaliland rebuilt their nation from the ashes with no help from anyone including Somalia that wants to claim them.
    4. For 33 years, they govern themselves and become a democratic nation while Somalia turned into a divided failed state where the president has zero control over some parts of Somalia and he can't even visit these parts.
    5. Somaliland now enjoys peace, prosperity, and democracy.
    6. The need for recognition is great, very deserved and their basic right as country.
    7. Somaliland gaining recognition will also benefit Somalia and the stability of all of horn of Africa.
    8. Most of the conflict in Somalia will cease to exist when Somaliland is recognized.
    9. After the recognition of Somaliland both Somalia and Djibouti will gain an ally.
    10. Finally all three countries can promote their common interest in peace and prosperity.
