We are so excited to bring you all along on our western whitetail hunt!
We load up Clyde, Reata and Cedar and head out to hunt rutting whitetail bucks with our rifles.
Being the first time we have ever hunted this particular country we had no idea what we were in for. But after one day of scouting the country we started to put together where the deer were holding up.
This was also the first time we packed out meat on our own mules, which made this trip especially meaningful to us. If you've been joining along for a while you know that we have been working hard to get our young mules safe in the mountains and being able to pack meat is a huge step.

Thanks Bo! It was so fun to have the mules over there. Lol yeah, it was like a sauna there in the afternoons 😂 But that tent is incredible! If we had cots, we’d have a TON of space in there- even with the dogs. Episode 2 should be our best yet!
I have watched your other videos but I can say that this video is the best one yet…. As a mule owner myself I particularly enjoy you hunting off of mules since this is something that I’m planning on doing in the near future. If I can critique anything it would be not to play music except for the introduction it takes away the natural sounds of the wild. But I did enjoy the content and I’m planning on showing this to my buddies. 👍

I was always hoping you would combine a hunting trip with your mules. That a has to be one of my favorite videos you have done. I really enjoyed the rugged open country beautiful landscape (not as rugged as your motel stay 🙂) Apricate your horsemanship (not sure mulemanship is a word?) and the progress you have made with your mules.

Great video guys! Congrats on the whitetail hes a beauty! Hunting with mules seems like it would be fun and another challege for hunting. Quick question.... did y'all worry about the mules spooking with the gunfire or were you far enough away from them it wasnt a big deal?
Thanks so much! Having the mules in hunting camp was a dream come true for us and it was super rewarding, but you’re right, it does add some logistical challenges. 😊 Super good question! We are definitely nervous about a gunshot spooking the mules… we’re doing our best to prepare them for when that day comes, but they were in camp when I shot my buck and also on the next episode when Alyssa gets her buck. We just went back and got them to help pack the meat 😊

Thank you so much! I actually got a new britchen and was excited to use it haha but we had forgotten our leather punch at home and it’s was too big and needed some holes punched. So I didn’t get to use it on this trip after all.

Cedar must have been going crazy when you left her back by herself. My horses go ape-shit if I leave them tied up behind in the backcountry to go look for elk. I can’t count how many elk got spooked because I separated the horses and they kept calling back and forth. So I have to go everywhere with the whole string 😂

I enjoyed the video a few questions though is this a popular hunting area it kind of seems like it also how many pounds of meat was that and how much can a mule carry since you had to walk it back to camp are the mules gun shy I'm not a hunter so did you wait an hour to make sure the deer was t wounded so you didn't have to track it I was so glad you brought the mules love that part I hope you have a merry Christmas and a joyous new year thanks kray
Hey Kray! Thanks for watching! Those are all good questions.
The area we were hunting on this trip is pretty popular, but not terribly overcrowded once we got away from the trailhead a couple miles.
Clyde was probably packing around 100 pounds of meat, I would guess. He could comfortably carry 180+ in that country because it was mostly on a flat trail.
If we shot right next to the mules, it would probably spook them a little, but I doubt they would run off or do anything too crazy. 🤞🏼😊
And yes, we just sat and watched the area where the deer disappeared for quite a while. It turned out that he probably died within 5 seconds of the shot, but if we had gone into the trees and spooked him while he was wounded, it could have been tough to track him and recover the meat.
We were SO HAPPY to finally get to take the mules hunting! It was a dream come true! 😊

lol I know, I know- it just tastes so much better with cream and sugar!
That’s a super good question! I think mules probably cover country a little quicker than mammoth jacks and I’d think they’re a little more powerful as well, but that’s just speaking in total generalities lol I’m sure a good mammoth jack could do anything our mules can 😊
How did that saddle pannier work out packing meat out? I've considered buying one. Please if you don't mind pro's & con's?
Morning Terry! We don’t mind at all! 😊 It worked extremely well on the saddle we have (it has a 15 1/2 inch seat). The panniers were tight on there so there was no play or sloppiness. The main pros for us were simplicity, and it gave us the ability to ride out, pick up the meat, and then just lead Clyde back.
It worked perfectly for us in this situation, but the cons would likely show up if you didn’t have a perfectly even load or if you were packing something bulky or awkward-shaped. We were also only packing about 90 pounds, so it may not work as well with a heavier load. We hope to find out next elk season 😁👍🏼
