Hundred Dollar Squirrel | Squirrel Hunt on MULES in the Ozarks using FEISTS

- Using mules for squirrel hunting is a great tradition in Arkansas and it's a valuable transportation tool when hunting the rugged Ozark Mountains. Clay Newcomb of Bear Hunting Magazine goes along with Trae Autry and Michael Lanier to hunt with Treeing Feists on public land. After the morning hunt they fry the squirrels in bear oil (bear grease) after battering them in a buttermilk/flour batter. You'll see Clay shoot off his mule, Izzie, and lots of other fun stuff. This video is designed to show the joys, camaraderie and fun of hunting. Also, the great tasting meat acquired from a game animal that many overlook - the grey squirrel.

Every man should have a good friend, good dog,and a good mule.I have been blessed to have all three.Truely enjoyed your hunt.
Donald Wells thank you and sounds like you’ve had some good companions.
Truer words were never spoken my friend.
And a good squirrel rifle Savage A17HM2.
Mr. Clay you've got your one in a lifetime mule.. I had my one in a lifetime treein' walker and mule in my younger days .. can't go back but I do have the memories. Thanks for the ride along.
Allen Wilson thanks for saying that, and I’ve had some others say the same thing. She’s really laid back, she’s a good looking mule, and she isn’t afraid of much. She’s only 3, so we’ve got a long ways to go. Sounds like you’ve had a good one too, and a great hound.
Mr Clay you have a gift with words. Thank you for sharing your stories
I love how old school and tradition yall are...my dad has a black widow long bow (beautiful bow) he loves javelina hunting with it...I like yur way of doin it traditional I like it...thank you
Joseph Darger Jr thanks for watching, Joseph.
@@bearhuntingmagazine thanx for sharing
Just got a rescue dog and have figured out she’s a Feist. I’d love to her let loose on some squirrels out in the country. She’s doing a great job terrorizing the ones in our suburban GA yard! 😀 Great video
Squirrel hunting is fortunately under rated. It's not about the trophy, but having some fun in the woods. No one thinks twice about perch fishing, but for some reason look down in squirrels. Going out with some mules looks like a pretty awesome opportunity too.
Great fun, great eating, it's a challenge and lots of opportunity.
This is a great video. I loved the "hundred dollar squirrel" comment. A lot of what hunters eat is not value for money or value for time in today's economy but it is undeniably worth every penny. My daughter and I liked this video and watched it a few times. She kept asking me to try squirrel. Here in the UK they are a pest and we shoot them but we don't usually eat them. Anyway after about 3 months of asking, I finally went out with her and got some squirrels. We just had Southern fried squirrel tonight and actually it was really good. Better than the chicken you get in the shops anyway. We will be eating squirrels again. Thank you for the inspiration.
Awesome comment! Good to hear you enjoyed the squirrel meat! RIGHT ON!
Them wise words at the end of the video. So true brother.
I don’t have a mule and I don’t hunt, but I sure liked this video! What an awesome way to spend the day ! You are very blessed. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Absolutely wonderful video! I grew up squirrel hunting with dogs in south Arkansas and as time progressed and prior too the leasing of timber company land we rode horses while following the dogs for years. Brings back great memories of hunting with Dad and Jerry and Uncle Jim. Oh how I miss those days...
Death Dealer D2 man! Sounds like you’ve got a rich history of squirrel hunting. Thanks for sharing the experience and watching the video. Good luck if you get to go again.
Great to have fun even with small adventures! Creates lasting memories and great camp fire stories.
I think that's what stood out to me about this hunt....it was JUST a squirrel hunt but it was so much fun.
Great video ... I have ridden mules for 39 years this year ... got my 1st lil buckskin molly mule in 1980 ... love the ending of the video also ... Onward and Upward is the watchword...
Thanks for the comment. Sounds like you've had some good experiences with mules.
Nice little feist dog you got there
In My Opinion thank you!
My grandfather hunted deer off a pinto pony in the Florida scrub with a 45-70 lever action. He called his rifle brush cutter. thanks for sharing
Wow. Thanks awesome.
Gotta love Clay, and Izzy
Nothing beat the comradere of a few friends on the hunt ( be it squirrels bunnies birds ).
The memories are etched in our minds for a lifetime.
Great video Clay... thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Mark. It's truly a rare human pleasure. If somebody's never done it they won't understand. Thanks for watching.
You make Steve Rinella look like a city slicker! I admire that you are striking your own path. Enjoy your presence on the Meateater podcast and came looking for some of your content. I'm hooked.
I had to see just how "flashy" this mule was after listening to the MeatEater episode... I wasn't disappointed. I'm an upland bird hunter but really enjoy any hunting that includes the assistance of domestic animals.
Joe Wiltjer right on, Joe. I’m glad you were happy with Izzie’s “flashy-ness”. We’ve got the full video of Clay training this mule too. Will post link.

Very, very well done sir!
Jayce Broda thanks for watching!
Seeing modern version of George Washington's creation, the mule, shine in such a beautiful place and helping bring such enjoyment is awesome.
Straight up awesome Clay!! After watching this video...I’m wanting a mule now for public land. Looks extremely useful. - Kirk

Potatoes fried in bear lard, the best ever.
Awesome video. I grew up hunting off mules going both squirrel and rabbit hunting. Both are a blast! Looking forward to seeing more videos!
You did an awesome job by the way with your mule, calm cool and collected
Kevin Roberts thanks! Have you seen the videos where I trained her?
@@bearhuntingmagazine the whole series and it was great
Kevin Roberts thanks

I want me a Mule...! Great video. Dialed you up after hearing Meateater PC.
Masonwildlife75 right on, bro. Owning a mule is a lifestyle. You’d love it and it would change you.
Clay I work on a Rescue Ranch in Texas and we have mules that are just in a pasture getting fat. You inspired me. I have never trained and mules before but I think I'm going to give it a shot
Great video man love squirrel hunting
Just Hunting right on. Good luck if you get to go anytime soon.

DylanJAllDay right on BRO!
Great video bringing back ol times .
Thanks, Ben.
Good job my brother. I love your story telling ability
matthew cornelison thanks Matt. Appreciate the comment.
I've killed a lot of squirrels call never hunted one with a shotgun before. We used 22 long rifle and 22 pistol with a red dot On it. Of course we didn't have to worry about shot being in our meat. Always try to go for the headshot. Great video as always
Kevin Roberts thanks Kevin. Appreciate you watching.
Now that how you hunt squirrels!! Awesome video.
Ron Wilson thanks Ron! Got to keep the Ozarks classy.
Absolutely loved it, great job!!
Sure nice to see Izzie again, she came a long way!
Guy Martin EN no kidding. She surprises me every time we ride. She’s still young and isn’t perfect but she is extremely laid back and doesn’t spook at much. She’s on her way to becoming and exceptional mule.
@@bearhuntingmagazine I'd say, I was really surprised when you shot the squirrell and she did not budge a bit. You done a good job with her.
@@simplyoutdoors1321 Thank you, guy. She's doing good.
I live and hunt in the Missouri Ozarks. Hunting from a mule is my dream! Thanks for the video. A mule just might follow me home someday soon. :)
csmall788 yes! Get a good one or train one yourself. Good luck man!
I am getting jealous of ya'll mule hunters now! Living in SW Virginia I have pondered many times that the older I get there is going to be a day when climbing the mountains is going to be out of reach. I guess I should start trying to convince my wife now before I get there that we should have a mule or two in our lives!
Sound levels were awesome even while listening on my headphones from my phone.
Christopher Ch I think we got that problem fixed. Thanks for the input.
Another fantastic video, that adds to an already fantastic storyline. I've rewatched the mule series several times now. Great work. Love the podcast too.
Hey, thanks a ton for listening to the podcast and watching the vids. Appreciate it. - Clay
Now I have to buy a mule. Thanks a lot.
Scott Montgomery haha! Yes, you do. Just don’t buy a hundred dollar mule...
Bear Hunting Magazine My wife is really pissed at you.
These videos are very well done
Mark Webb thanks Mark. We appreciate it.
Best video on CZcams. I surely wish y'all could make some more i really enjoyed this video thanks again Fella's and I'm following y'all's with the hopes of seeing some more videos in the future.
My goals! That’s one fine mule you got sir.
That looks like fun!
I started out hunting squirrel like many others back in the day. I learned a lot of woodsmanship being a squirrel hunter. I also learned what it felt like to be complerely lost in the Louisiana swamp! Haha! Great video Clay, appreciate your work!
Stefan Schmidt swamps and flat ground are hard to navigate. It’s pretty easy to navigate the mountains. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for the videos I loved watching the relationship between you Izzy grow from when you first got her to now. Keep up the good work
Love hunting squirrel with a slingshot look like you guys are having fun
blackout lancaster76 right on!
Awesome video love squirrel hunting just started hunting them with a .22 call PCP air rifle dam it's fun. Oh I forgot the only time ever throwed from animals was a mule and a Shetland pony lol. Thanks for the video I kind of miss worded my replies have been hunting squirrel for over 60 years just started in 2016 with an airgun whole lot different than using a shotgun or 22 rifle my father started me out with.
Grumpy Troll-1 haha! Right on. Thanks for watching and good story.
So pumped you’re joining Meateater!!! Just means more content!
Wow this is an amazing video great job on this
As an arm chair expert and a non keyboard assassin I gotta say...... Awesome video. 😁👍👍

This video hit me in my feels bro! Love it!! Well done and well said!!
This mule series makes me want one!
Matt, they are a lot of fun, a lot of work, but are an incredible addition to hunter's tool chest.
Keep making great videos!

Great video. Brings back memories of hunting squirrels with my pap,dad and uncle. Except we used 22's.
Jason Simone excellent. 22’s are the way to go.
Clay you should right a book! 101 ways to use Bear Grease! My favorite is for eggs in the morning! OOOh and it does make the worlds best pie crust!
Richard Burnett good idea man! Right on. Sounds like you’ve used some before. Good.

Right on, Matt. You're the MAN.
Izzy turning out to be a fine ride . Hunting off a mule it’s something you must try . Your right to quote human life is like a flower in the wind ! Hope there’s many more seasons for all of us !
That mule will sure extend your hunting into later years.
You are the best
Marius Ivascu thanks for watching.
Good job breaking in that mule didn’t even move when you shot the gun
Joe Precourt thanks Joe. She’s a pretty good one, but I had been preparing her for this for a while.
Looks like alot of fun.... 👍 good vid Clay... Looking forward to your next vid.. hopefully another trad hunting vid soon...? 😁
Andy J if I could ever kill something with that tradbow I’d make a video. Lol. I missed a lot of critters this year! Planning to try to kill a deer here before the season ends.
Love this video! I would like to squirrel hunt with my boys
Just discovered your unique clip on squirrels, wow, we had Arabia's on the farm growing up and I shoot 100s of gophers, wonder if they taste the same : ) They were bad for the horses so I shot many and now thinking I should have had my own restaurant! Love everything about you guys, knew your bit at the end too, which was most wonderful and I just about fell off the couch many don't mention their faith up in Canada, I think we're on the same page, I love the word as it's saved me! Love hunting too, new to both but many mouths to feed
stevi jay thanks for the comment and for watching! In an genuine effort to be authentic we’ve got no choice but to mention our faith! That being said, you’ll need some faith to eat those gophers! Haha...Good luck and good hunting.
Also lots of riding trails for mules...
great video.
Jim Satterfield thanks Jim.
We had a good mass I thought this year, here in Mo. At least our Jefferson County areas did. So did our southern properties in Madison and Wayne. Love the vids Clay, and your narration is second only to Morgan Freeman.
You know....I heard the same thing from other guys in Missouri. I western Arkansas we had VERY few acorns at all.
Now that’s livin rite
Master Dan Price thanks Dan.
Awesome job training your partner! Worked a team of them back in the day 😊 never been more pissed off in my life and proud! Turkey hunters think they have highs n lows!... 😂 I'm a turkey hunter too!
This was a very enjoyable hunt to watch! I sure wish I could've tasted that squirrel fried in the bear grease. Looked good! What shot size do you fellows use by the way?
Wonderful video. Loved it.
Todd Childers thanks Todd.
Good video
Thanks, John.
She didn’t even flinch

This was awesome.
A man that says Akern, orta be able to say Holler as well.
Reminds me of my grandfather's old mule he had. You fire a gun off her back for hrs and she just stood rock steady.
Travis Derry right on. It’s a good mule if you can shoot off their back.
Very cool!
David Gonzalez thanks David!
Awesome! I'd love to see some more hound hunting from you such as coyotes, mountain lions.
Jm Kronholm right on. Good idea.
Very enjoyable and perhaps next time the location will have more animals to hunt.
Thanks for watching Stanley. Squirrels were pretty thin in our area this year. They'll come back.
Mules....gotta love "em.
👍👍
Great video!!
Kevin Balius thanks for watching.
Love the video I like how you keep everything traditional all the way down to the bear lard. I thought the only thing that was funny about that or ironic is that I see your propane bottle in the back video hahaha kind of figured you guys would be cooking over an open fire great video still a thumbs up for me👍
Right on and thanks for watching the video. Our goal isn't necessarily to always do it the "old way" just wanting to give a hat-tip some old things that are still relevant.
@@bearhuntingmagazine I completely understand and agree like to see good ol mule work for y'all. I'll be doing some squirrel hunting soon as deer season goes out here in the farm. Ummmm ummm squirrel and dumplings hell yeah. 👍
