Just replaced my chain and Automatic tensioner on my 2003 with 42k miles a couple weeks ago. It sounded like a sewing machine. I found the automatic tensioner all the way out. Had to have a mirror to see the timing marks on the intake cam sprockets to replace the chain in the bike, but all an all not too bad of a job. Great video!!!
I from france, my 1st experience about hayabusa was exactly the same as yours, and since 1999 I love it so much more that the cbrxx that was my favorite bike design. Thank a lot for all the informations.
Thanks, I'm trying to work out why my 2008 suddenly wont fire! Dead, either no spark, still getting to the plugs, or zero fuel ie injectors. I fell in love with the looks, I reckon they look the part. Only a couple of months ago it went in for a recall to replace power regulator, and Im fairly certain it wasn't replaced as there is a metal frame pin with a plastic harness loop that neither end could pass through. You would have to cut that loop to replace. Anyway thanks best wishes from Australia.
Hey I'm having the exact same problem right now and I nearly tested everything listed in the suzuki workshop manual for the 2008. I'm getting crazy about it. Did you resolve your problem? Greetings from Germany ✌️
First water pumper GSXR 1100 was 1993. I have a 93, and a 94. 1993 was a WP, and the 1994 was a WR, at least in the U.S. Just trying to help Brock. No one respects your 7 second Bandit more than me, thank you. T.S. RACING
Looking forward to following this. I like the new Busa, dislike the Gen 2 (appearance, i know it is a quicker bike stock-stock) but love love loooove a Gen 1 and this one while rather "marmite" is a stunner (minus the rear seat i.m.o hope it has a matching rear cowl)
Thanks Brock, always enjoy these! Love my Gen 1 Busa, had similar issue and turned out to be a clogged fuel filter, granted mine is the internal fuel pump and filter style (or was before adding a turbo). Sucks to think it's the timing chain! Look forward to seeing the next episode to determine if that is the problem or not.
I would try swapping the ECU with a known good one. It sounds like it is bouncing off the limiter. Did you check the spark plugs? Were any excessively wet? What kind of shape are the injectors in? Any swelling? I'd ohm the injectors and give them a good cleaning. I would also check & ohm the primary/secondary on the coils. I would also check the wiring harness for any broken wires. Specifically at the connector plugs for the coils. (Give each wire a light gentle pull to make sure they're snug in the connector.) I've seen wires that were broke, but were held in place, and hidden below the weather proof seal on the wiring. I would also check for any broken ground wires. And for any broken wires at the ECU connector plugs. I would also maybe go through and test any and all electrical sensors. If those all checked out, then I would pull out the wiring diagram, and start at one end of the harness, and individually check each wire and its output for continuity.
I've got a GSXR that just never runs right at idle, "idle surging" and has been going on since 2500 miles. It also backfires once in awhile. Full Alpha T exhaust with ECU Flash. Driving me crazy. Runs hard as hell up top but at low RPM backfires. Wish a guy like you was closer to diagnose it.
I've had the exact same problem on my 2007 Honda CBR600RR, it would feel like a soft limiter at 12k revs (engine redlines at 15k+) The problem ended up being a broken top compression ring in cylinder 1.
@@Jason.cbr1000rr I'm going to put it down to poor maintenance from the previous owner (engine was quite dirty when I stripped it) I had only done 300 km's (186 mi) when she went pop. Funny enough I was also interested in a 2008/09 CBR1000RR they look really beautiful to me. And yes the under tail exhaust is super sexy!!
Brock, did you check the charging system voltage output? if the voltage exceeds the threshold that the ECU can handle, over 15.5v, this could be the issue. Faulty voltage regulator? Or if a stator coil winding is faulty, voltage may be too low? Other possibility is one or more ignition coils breaking down under load. Did you check the fuel pressure at the injectors? If the fuel pressure regulator is faulty and allowing pressure to increase or decrease from the specified 42psi, this can cause running problems like the one that you are experiencing. So many possibilities . . .
one of my friends had an M109R and it had a issue with the clutch switch on an aftermarket lever causing the bike to nut run right... I rode a Hayabusa for the first time ever ( my brother's gen 2 ) it didn't feel heavy like I thought it would and I had to constantly check my speed otherwise I'd be doing 80ish all over town and not even know it.
Are the secondary throttle blades still installed? Possibly issue with the STVA? What about the aftermarket fuel cap? Is it vented properly? If sealed it can cause an issue. Opening it and then immediately going for a ride under load to see if issue goes away. It issue appears after a few minutes then cap ventilation issue.

Isn't the battery just for starting the bike. Doesn't the stator/alternator provide all the electricity needed to run the bike once started, as well as recharge rhe battery from the loss during starting? I know you should be able to remove rhe battery from the bike once started and it should remain fully operational.
Not on most bikes. Unlike cars, bikes don't have the room to carry high output alternators, especially fast bikes since they rob power. Additionally, power requirements are far greater under heavy load than when cruising so even though it may run...it doesn't run correctly or for long at high speeds.
I keep seeing people saying that the Kawasaki ZX-14 is better than the Hayabusa but you have to realize that year that it came out they put a governor on it and instead of it going the natural 200 mi an hour it only went to 187 and the ZX-14 is a bigger motor 1400 versus 1300 and you got to think about the rider also
Was the there that audible tick tick tick noise you usually hear at idle with a stretched cct? not sure if it's noticeable on the older model bikes. Have definitely noticed it on newer kawi's when the cam chain has stretched. Never owned anything but kawi's so not sure.
@kawi lifezx10r - yes, there was an audible tick at idle. I tried to catch it on video -but the sound is elusive on the audio due to the noise the clutch basket backing plate springs were also making.
Hopefully you can see this message and have time to answer my question. I just purchase a 2001 busa and they eliminated the oil cooler and put block off plates on there. Am I safe to drive around like that Don't do so much long distance driving. Or should I put the oil cooler back on thanks
Never a good idea to street ride without oil cooler. But reinstalling can get tricky too unless they added a bypass hose. If blocked and capped, you must reinstall the plug.
@@BrockDavidson Are you talking about the plug? That's behind the oil filter besides putting everything El spec. Thanks for getting back to me appreciate it.
Yes. But also be weary of any other "tricks" - like welding the oiling holes shut in the balancer. If you get everything back to the specs in the Suzuki Service manual - you will be fine. Best of luck.
Hi Brock. I was hoping if you could please help me out with a technical question. on 2017-2020 GSXR 1000R, the connector that plug into dashboard/speedometer/gauge, could you please tell me which wire ( color code) is the ground and which wire is 12 volt power supply to the dashboard? Thank you so much Brock!
@Tj Tj - yes. We used to have a gearing adjustment drop down on our ZX-14R Guhl Moto flashes specifically to cure this problem. Unfortunately, Guhl has left the industry and I don't know any other 3rd party flash software that knows how to cure. Maybe ask Chris Moore if he can help.
@@BrockDavidson I don't drag race but I know the diameter of my wheel is smaller so if I do make a gear change I think I need to go down maybe by two teeth on the rear sprocket instead of one up that is on it?
Love this video thanks for putting something out like this. Just a helpful tip most of your watchers probably do not know what a encyclopedia is they use Google now😂😂😂 JK
@@BrockDavidson hey Brock just wanna say thanks for responding youre one of my heroes. and im trying to match or beat your record with my turbo busa. wanna be on the prostreet goat list thank you for inspiring me brotha! and so many others out here in the pursuit of glory!
Why don't Hayabusa riders have frame sliders on their motorcycle? That looks easier to drop than a Harley Davidson because this is heavy and higher. Perhaps, I don't know something about.
@@BrockDavidson oh ok. I would say fuel filter, but you already changed the pump. I just had mine do it with a crap starter relay. But I just got to the part where you said the cam chain tensioner is the possible culprit. Great content man.
Put some plugs in it, 4000 miles and they are done, I have an '03 for 13years in the UK, every 4K it drops a spark on one plug, did it at 3900 miles 8010 miles, but the bastard has just done it again after only 1200 miles. 9K miles from new. Totally stock bike.
@Mark holroyde - Yes. Consistently fouling plugs (in the same cylinder) are typically a sign of inadequate cylinder pressure (tight valve, head gasket leak, etc...) or oil contamination (poor ring seal) both are easily determined by a leak down test. If it's happening to random plugs in random cylinders - look more towards the tune-up.
@@BrockDavidson Different cyls, stock from the factory, 9100 miles, no oil use...ive been leak testing cars for 35 years, not coils, this thing has beat 20 so called "experts" so far. New plugs, good to go, its a real difficult one, no codes, starts instantly etc etc. cheers for reply.
I had a CAR BATTERY explode in my face when I was 17, I had both caps off the battery…..yes Kids we used to be able to service our own batteries…..but when I was locking into the battery my girlfriend/wife’s cousin LIT A LIGHTER for me to see and BABOOOOOOOM! Was not pretty, I was blind for 20 min, luckily a medic from the Army saw it happen and grabbed me and flushed my eyes and cleaned the acid off my face. My hearing is now damaged due to the explosion. Batteries are nothing to mess with….. When I was in the emergency room, I was hospitalized for a few days, a nurse told us that a few weeks prior a local farmer had been decapitated trying to jump his tractor batteries and crossed the terminals!
WoW! Glad you are ok. We have established safety protocols here, just because lead acid batteries are dangerous and the new ones are scary AF. I had a lithium battery start to smoke in one of my Harley's. Filled the garage with crazy toxic smoke. Luckily, my son noticed it, pushed the bike outside and pulled the battery. It literally smoldered FOR DAYS. I used baking soda - no luck. Ended up burring the damn thing...it's probably still smoking, lol.
@@BrockDavidson wow that’s crazy shit! Yeah people underestimate what can happen w batteries! @@BrockDavidson Ignition or cam timing then?
@@georgeanddaddecker7563 good call...both 😉
I love my Gen 1 I need to bring her down to you to get flashed ASAP. Mine was miss firing til I cleaned out the injectors now she runs rich
Love it!

@@BrockDavidson thank you fine sir!
Should still check fuel line from tank. Found dirt, rust. Replace filter. And make sure no rust in tank
We inspected the lines when we replaced the fuel pump.
I have an 2002 with 19k miles
@@BrockDavidson thank you so much
Battery Plus has the best batteries...

Soon! It's in editing now.
I have no idea...why would you want to know?
Thanks Brock for the reply. Trying to troubleshoot the Starlane Davinci-II TFT dashboard that I am trying to install instead of OEM LCD dashboard.
It should be black/white for the ground, and white/green for the +12V. Anyway, it’s easy to check with a multimeter and find the correct wires
Thank you Simone.
👍
Over thinking it on the cam chain. I doubt that's the cause of misfire
😉
My 2018 ZX14R is doing the exact same thing with only 4500 miles on it but at 3200 to 4500 RPMs and mostly in second gear any suggestions? Thanks
You changed your sprockets... use the blue support button on our site for more info.
@@BrockDavidson one tooth on the rear sprocket up to a 43 you really think that's what's doing it? I wonder if an ECU flash will help
Why did Guys leave?
Do drag bikes run a rear wheel sensor I would assume that they wouldn't because of all of the gear changes?
Yes
@@BrockDavidson all right looking forward to part 2 on the Hayabusa
Just curious, why would you ask about the rear wheel speed sensor vs. number of gears shifted?
@@BrockDavidson because there are several bikes that have had gear changes and not having the problem I am so it must be something else maybe
@@BrockDavidson I don't drag race but I know the diameter of my wheel is smaller so if I do make a gear change I think I need to go down maybe by two teeth on the rear sprocket instead of one up that is on it?
I like.. 👍👍👍
Love this video thanks for putting something out like this. Just a helpful tip most of your watchers probably do not know what a encyclopedia is they use Google now😂😂😂 JK
gonna do a turbo build brocky boy get back in the top 10?
Do I look like I need a hair dryer :)
@@BrockDavidson yes

@@BrockDavidson hey Brock just wanna say thanks for responding youre one of my heroes. and im trying to match or beat your record with my turbo busa. wanna be on the prostreet goat list thank you for inspiring me brotha! and so many others out here in the pursuit of glory!
Why don't Hayabusa riders have frame sliders on their motorcycle? That looks easier to drop than a Harley Davidson because this is heavy and higher. Perhaps, I don't know something about.
They slow us down ;)
Secondary injectors plugged or bad.
Gen 1 Busa's are single injector bikes. But GREAT call!
@@BrockDavidson oh ok. I would say fuel filter, but you already changed the pump. I just had mine do it with a crap starter relay. But I just got to the part where you said the cam chain tensioner is the possible culprit. Great content man.
Coils
That was my thought too. If its from the cam chain tensioner I will be surprised.
Coils going out.
where are you i want to bring you my busa i;m in new york

Brock, can you tune a bike online
No using what we offer here at Brock's. Get with Cecil at HTP Racing, he can tell you what it takes.
@@BrockDavidson thanks
And now you’ll see all these DRZ-400 boys buying up the MCCT market because they have no clue what it’s for but anodized bling is anodized bling…

air
Taking false air i guess is the problem
Bad fuel, check injectors, fuel rail for trash.
Changed fuel, how would you "check" Injectors (I'll tell you what I did later) swapped fuel pumps, old filter was clear.
A leak down test can help determine why it's happening.
@@BrockDavidson A leak down test for a failed plug?
Interesting. I would have to see the leak and compression results to try to help more.
Thanks as well, some hearing loss from the explosion and I wear glasses now (I prob would have anyway!), and a few small scares on my face if you knew where to look but hey, I’m not complaining!!!!
The good Lord kept me here to get shit done and that’s what I’m going to keep doing!
^Love the content as always, keep on keep’n on Brock!
Btw I just ordered one of the TTS Supercharger Kits for the Gen 2 Busa, can’t wait to see what all that goodness feels like on two wheels!
