Bryan Robson would be my first pick on any England 11 over the past 40 years.
Robson was good but not great.
@@gunternetzer9621 At his best he would would have played in every international European team from 1980 to 1990. Unfortunately, he was often injured.
@@gunternetzer9621 every professional football player who played with or against him would disagree...I think their opinion has more weight than you 😂😂😂
So basically Gary named the 1990 world cup team...and Shearer.
lol
Nah cuz right back would've been Paul Parker
Is that the one when he shat himself on the pitch against Ireland and rubbed himself down like a dog !
I think it’s people he’s played with so that makes sense.
Viv Anderson?
I'm Scottish and I think Gary Lineker is brilliant. Years of getting ripped on They Think It's All Over has turned him into a really witty and clever TV personality, comes across really well
I agree with Barnes and Waddle out wide. Two absolutely world class players. Magic.
How much would waddle be worth on todays market natural 2 footed put a Ball to you foot from 2 miles away
@@simonsmith8949 Not world class, never did it at international level - Waddle showed he was not up to it in '86.
They can't all be unbelieeeevably gifted Gary! Great guy, great dress sense, great sense of humour. Top man Gaz!
This is brilliant. Great to hear an inside view of so many legends.
So many North East lads in that team! Shearer, Beardsley, Gazza, Robson, Waddle. Wish we could produce that talent now!
Mic Mid We can but it never gets a game. We import players. We don't export.
The talent is still there. It's such a shame so much potential isn't nurtured.
Mic Mid Such a true comment !!!
Ive always thought that, whoever ran youth coaching in the eighties in the north east deserves a knighthood, unbelievable pool of talent came out of there!
@@paulwraith1892 It didn't happen.
I'm glad he picked Des Walker, who was superb in his prime years.
mizofan I'm back!
Des Walker doesn’t get the recognition he deserves and has been largely forgotten by fans.
Pretty much the 1990 World Cup team glad to see Robbie and Beardsley acknowledged both great players
It's the best England squad in my lifetime. It's almost identical to the England dream team Bobby Robson picked too of the players who played under him in his 1990 autobiography. So much talent and Lineker said in another interview the Italia 90 squad had a dozen world class players, not sure we'll see such a talented squad ever again. Only the 1966 squad can claim to be better and that was a long time ago.
As a Forest fan from that era, I’m both proud and depressed.
Your in the playoffs hopefully see u in the prem
Back...
the gap in quality from those really good english players to the shite they have now... staggering, and -I don't get why so many ppl dislike gary, hes a perfectly likeable bloke and this clip is actually more interesting than 99.99% of football clips out there
Do people dislike Gary???....As far as the football media goes, I've always considered him to be one of the most liked. I could do without some of his lefty liberal tweets, but apart from that, he seems like a good guy.
Hittingitstiff yeah, but read the comments on this very video, most are insulting him, read his tweeter account,. how hes constantly attacked
juan altredo Yeah, but that's Twitter and CZcams, who doesn't get abused on there?
Hittingitstiff he, thats true
Spot on, his comments about Bryan Robson are perceptive...his loss in the 1990 World Cup was a massive blow, but your right,, he would have squeezed England past Germany, the English players like Waddle, Robson, Barnes, Walker, Butcher, Gascoigne were top dollar players, overlooked Beardsley...
Lineker picked probably the perfect England Team, Miss watching everyone of them. Especially Terry Butcher, the guy was an absolute beast.
NO HE WAS A TEDDY BEAR MON THE GLASGOW RANGER5 YA BASS HE,HA
Dreadful player - no skill at all - a plunger and a slicer. How he played for England God only knows.
Chris Whaddle what a player. I am amazed that Lineker thinks the same. Same for Pierce.John Barnes was the only reason England came back against Argentina in that game at the Azteca. And of course Gazza. The only difference is in the choice of strikers, Lineker was far better than anyone else.
If you talk about pure skill - Beardsley, Waddle, Barnes and Gazza.
If you talk about hard - Butcher and Robson.
If you talk about probably the 2nd best midfielder of the 80s behind Platini then its Robson.
And if you want to talk about the best English footballer of all time who could stand on a pitch with any player in history and hold his own then its Gazza - what a player he was.
Gazza was overrated
@@declanobrien1283 🤣🤣🤣
@@declanobrien1283 you mistake his underachievement for being over rated. Talent wise and if we are on his best day he is up there with anyone I've seen. But those days were to rare.
@@calumhyder339 If they were rare then he was overrated, an overrated idiot who did himself no favours.
@@declanobrien1283 bollox was he. He was the best player this island has ever had. Its not even a debate. You can't name me a better "footballer" than Gazza?!?!
I dunno why but the brian Robson story makes me laugh every time
This is how favorite 11 should be, well done lineker
Gazza was amazing!! What a player
Peter Beardsley is massively underrated, not with toon and pool fans though. The players he played with know exactly how class he was and always put him in their team.
Petes a guy who could put keegan and shearer in his team. Would be interesting
David Forster most underrated player I've ever seen. Man of the match 7/7 times I watched him against Boro.
David Forster most underrated player I've ever seen. Man of the match 7/7 times I watched him against Boro.
How many times?
I read that even when he was at the top of his game he always carried the bag of balls and other kit out for training and helped put it away again. A wonderful player true down to earth and humble man.
It's absolutely criminal how little is spoken of Peter Beardsley's brilliance. The man was a different class.
Beardsley and Barnes. Two of the greatest ever.
Barnes is my footballing hero and Beardsley was just a little genius..That front 3 they formed with Ian Rush is legendary
No
LOL.
Beardsley was an absolute genius, i shudder to think what he would be worth these days.
I agree
Bryan Battista I never saw him play. And youtube highlights don’t seem to flatter him. Yet I’ve seen a lot of English players of his time call him the best they’ve played with, maybe more so than Gascoigne. So which player today would you consider resemble Beardsley closely? How good was Beardsley?
@@wthppl David Silva is kind of similar but Beardsley scored more goals and would dribble past players more often. He used to hit defence splitting passes without looking in the same direction as the ball which is why Lineker loved playing with him, they had a telepathic relationship. i understand your puzzlement though, I never saw George Best play and people from my dads generation went on about him like he was better than Pele but theres not much footage of him doing anything that amazing....its a similar thing
Zola?
£13.50
All those in their prime, that would have been an awesome team! Well done Gary!
Love Lineker he’s a legend
England have produced so many brilliant players, what happened? The older generations got to watch the likes of Lineker, Shearer, Robson and Gascoigne, and then my generation has to put up with the likes of Welbeck, Wilshere, Lallana and Townsend in another. Even the 'golden generation' was a massive let down having not got past the quarter finals in any tournament.
Jack Arnold Not since 1996.
What happened? Other countries have been producing superior players, simple as that. A country can only overrate their own players for so long before the fans realize they're just not as good as their opponents, except for England who's been doing it for decades.
***** no, just no...
Because academies are not bringing through enough technically gifted players.
Oh yeh? What about scholes, Gerrard, lampard, terry?
With a few variations the selection was basically the England 1990 World Cup team, my childhood heroes.
Absolutely love his story telling
What a squad! All fantastic choices!
What a squad!!! Legends
This is epic i love the stories, not just picking players
Four forest players in there, I'd kill for them to be in the team now!
A team full of men: Butcher, Pearce, Robson, Shearer. Unbelievable talent to boot throughout the team. How did we fail to win something during this period?
Because you need skilful players not 10k runners and cloggers. Butcher and Pearce - awful. Robson and Shearer were good but not great.
Lineker LOVES, ABSOLUTELY LOVES Gazza
This team is spot on, what a team!
Beardsley is the most underrated player of all time he was great
Even Beardsley's chin was on the wing , he was that committed .
That's a good side, 20 times better than today's lot.
Gary Lineker NEVER disappoints...........NEVER!
On the pitch..no. He is a rather thick, woke, hypocritical self-regarding fool and narcissist off it.
4 out of 11 are former Nottingham Forest players: Shilton, Anderson, Walker, Pearce.
Jacob Nicholson and the other 6 are from the Toon
Beardsley was as close a player in skill and vision to Messi as I have seen.
:oD
No
He was better than Messi and so was Gazza
@@Mod-rw9cw if that’s what you want to believe
@@benspiller455 You watch Beardsley in his prime and you will see how good he was!
I love Gary lineker he's gorgeous
What a great bloke
Probably the only England XI that doesnt include Lineker himself. Nice one Gary :)
Peter Beardsley always reminded me of Shawn Ryder just because I thought that he looked like him a bit 😂
Robson was better than Keane, Gerrard & the like - he was simply a marvel (Captain).
Lineker is that straight laced I bet he shouts sorry when he comes
LMFAO - This should have more thumbs up. You miserable basturds!
Very straight laced. Never got booked!
Do you always imagine retired international footballers ejaculating?
I volunteer to test this theory
😂😂😂
Who doesnt love Gary Lineker?? Model professional and a great example
I don't.
Four first players were all Forest legends!!!!
I want a compilation of Linekers Gazza stories please!
I second that lol, the biggest mistake they made was not making them roomates
we would have won 90
Matt Verrier
Hi
People talk about the golden generation of Rio. Cole , terry, scholes, Lampard, Gerard but this team would absolutely kill the 2002 team. and I'd put Lineker in front over Shearer.
Pleased he picked 4 Ex-Newcastle players (Barnes and Pearce also played for us late on in their careers).
Was sure he would pick Hoddle. Class as well.
We love you Gary we do we love you Gary we do oh Gary we love you
Des walker did a real job on Klinsmann in the 90 semi final. Best central defender in the tournament.
Absolutely
That German team was THE team though.....
wow; some all time greats
Robson was a phonomenal player.
If I was picking a striker for my top team it would be Shearer every time.
@ I just liked the way he played and his free kicks outside the box were brilliant.
Bobby Robson was a great England manager, but I wish he had been more tactically innovative. Imagine if he'd invented the 4-2-3-1 system when we had the likes of Waddle, Hoddle, Barnes and Beardsley to choose from in the attacking three; Robson, Wilkins or Reid in the holding roles; Lineker or Hateley up top.
Very good point, god England had players of that quality in the 1980's...Those players could have wrought havoc at the highest levels...A Q/F in 86 and S/F in 90 not bad and did not lose a game in the 82 World cup and thrashed one of the great international football teams of all time, (Robson and Wilkins et al the French, did not lose against the Spanish or the West Germans in that tournament...don't tell me England did not have very good players before the Premiership...
I think it was Terry Venables form the mid 1980s who was eager to play Waddle and Barnes off the flanks and nearer to the midfield and the front man, Lineker...Venables got the job 10 years too late..
@@kailashpatel1706 Waddle, Hoddle and Barnes weren't up to it at international level - they just weren't, no matter how well they played for their clubs. Hateley - errrggh. Peter Beardsley of course very good.
He was not a GREAT manager - he fluked his way through a lot of the time.
Hell of a team
Great team Gary.
big praise for captin marvel robo ! that woz a huge statement 2 say we might ov won something if e had less injuries ! big MAN U fan so that 1 went down a treat for me !
that gaza story is hilarious lmao
Lineker top player, top bloke.
i didn't know Ralph Macchio palyed for England 0:28
From left to right
Carlos,Maldini,Thuram,Alves
Nedved,Viera,Iniesta,Ronaldo
Ronaldo,Batistuta,Messi
Four Forest players (Shilton, Anderson, Pearce, Walker). Lineker is a Leicester lad but he knows where it is at.
That Brian Robson and Gazza story hahahaha
His most successful season of his career, was at Everton. Yet he doesn't pick a single Everton player. And Gary has said many times, That 80's Everton team was the best side he ever played for ! Go figure.
Nice video, I enjoy watching Lineker's videos (I find him very honest). I do agree with John Barnes and Alan Shearer. Personally I would have John Charles and Gary Lineker in my team along with Jimmy Bullard and Robbie Savage (shame Robbie's Welsh), Jimmy and Robbie would be a right laugh at the bar after a few cans of Special Brew!!
Bullards not funny.
Gary Lineker's dream team = Forest. Good man!
Seb no mate 5 of them are geordies and never played for forest
essentially the italia 90 team
Minus arguably our most effective player in that tournament - David Platt.
Pretty much - apart from Shearer who was only 20 and wasn't there
Strong squad selection
Shearer and Gazza awesome
Barnes the player who makes me love this game...
Can't fault this geezer/legend's 11. (let alone goals)
What a great team and all English
Great team
Can't believe Glenn Hoddle didn't get in that team.
England's true golden generation well represented here. Add to this the likes of Ince, Adams, Merson, Wright, Rocastle, Platt... how the F didn't we win anything?!
Strange he's said Everton was the best club side he ever played for but he's not picked any of his then team-mates, didn't even mention one a possible. I'd have Trevor Steven ahead of Waddle all day long for example.
Compliment really though in a way; it was the team that was great as a unit rather than a collection of individuals.
Great team gary
I have to be honest..I never really saw the best of Brian Robson (pre injuries) as when i was getting into football his career was nearly at an end but from what i've seen i can tell he was a big game player ..and doesn't he still hold the record for fastest goal scored at a WC finals?
actually i think that is incorrect..
Bryan.
Basically the 1990 team,if not for the fa choosing an absolute wally for a manager they could have won 1994-certainly had the experience.
Taylor wasn't great for England granted but it was a transitional period..Gazza was injured most that time..So was Barnes and Robson, Butcher and Shilton was finished, Lineker finished, Pearce, Beardsley and Waddle aging. He only really had Platt from that italia 90 side
If i go through his list of outstanding players, i keep wondering, why England never won shit over the last 50 years. Unbelievable!
And after a while o following old memories of great England teams, i remember why they didn`t succeed: It was mostly because of us;-)! Greets from Munich!
You city Your stadium Our cup! Greetings from Chelsea :)
Scream Phoenix
Good one;-)
+scotti pippen germans as soon as they get out the womb they are forced to take penalties 5 hours a day
Because the English media only criticises/pressures them to fail
Touche
3 former Wednesday players! Up the Owls
As a Rangers Supporter ..To watch Butcher & especially Gazza was unbelievable....Both in there relevant positions were a mile ahead of anyone in the UK.
He picked a England eleven team, what a surprise. The Liverpool team of 78 would have played Lineker’s team off the park.
This is a forest back line
Oh Gary. 😁😁😁
Great side
Brilliant choice XXXXX
he was asked to pick his fantasy english team; thats why they are all from england.
You got a Geordie superhuman warrior in Robson a flawed Geordie genius in Gazza and Wizard Geordie in Beardsley not to mention the Premierships top scorer in a certain A Shearer.
Thank you ya Geordie ***** lets hope this boy Longstaff is as good as i think he is.
Never realised 1980s England used to field the black players Linekar has named (and good on him) - it's a shame SkySports, BBC, and others never called them back when Black Lives Matter and racism in general became the central topic of discussion. It would be very interesting to hear about their experiences and their thoughts on how the game has progressed with regards to these issues. And above any of that, just wish these players were remembered more as footballers - if not as league footballers then certainly as servants for England (clearly very good players if good enough to get into Linekar's XI!)
that geordie trio up top!
Shillong over southall?
Monte-Carlo Gaz Shilton was one of the best keepers in the world and was the best keeper in Britain during his prime and has longevity no other keeper can match. He was one of the main reasons why Nottingham Forest had so much success under Brian Clough.
Lineker loves Forest players ;)
Gary Linker is the top scorer of the 86th World Cup
Pretty much the Italia 90 eleven plus shearer then 🤷🏼♂️😂
Four of those played for Sheffield Wednesday.
Great players of that generation, what a phneomal line up
Linekar looks better now than his younger days!!
kryptonite98 ck yeah, he’s grown into his ears
Yeah, he’s grown into his ears
6 of the 11 played for newcastle
Only Shearer was born in and was from Newcastle - the others are from the North East kid.
Mr Frisky Shearer, Gazza and Beardsley were all born and raised in Newcastle
