    In my watercolor journey I basically went from high tech and extravagant to the most basic palettes ever. I shudder when I think of the money I could have saved by just starting out this way, but I guess the journey was necessary. I've settled on small limited palettes with a preference for full pans, in very compact little tins.. the largest I have is a nine pan (seven fulls and two halves) and the smallest are my old masters trios. Several are four to six pans. Most are Altoids tins (they come in three colors and I've used some nice labels for the top but you can customize them in a million ways) and recently found the cutest little tins at Cracker Barrel country store that are perfect for the trios.. they come in four colors. In the past I had huge palettes.. 20, 30, even 50 colors.. but I not only use the smaller ones more often, I feel they perform better... and I know my work improved as well as my color theory. It's so much easier to mix color and set up a complementary color scheme when your options are limited and focused on the primaries. Every color is based off the others and they automatically go along with each other. If I want a different effect I just change to the palette that will give it to me. I use magnets so if I do change my mind I can just move the pans around as needed with no waste... and I mix on a separate surface so no need to all those flaps and lids anyway. A full pan can accommodate a brush up to 1" with no issue and I really don't paint any larger than that (at least in watercolor, I've done poster size acrylics in the past).

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Před 3 lety +3

      I think it is pretty normal for us to try lots of different materials and buy way too much when we are in the early stages of learning to paint. I even see many painters studios, with 25+ years of experience, have hundreds of brushes in pots that they never use. It's very rare that someone starts with a limited palette right from the start. Even if it is probably the best way to learn.
      Wow 50 colors in a palette. I think my head would explode trying to use that many.
      I love using my palette with 9 colors in it. It suits almost everything Like to paint. I think I might expand to 12 eventually though.

      @@JayNathanWatercolor My favorite nine pan at the moment is Winsor Newton... yellow ochre, sap green, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, sepia, davy's grey, quin magenta, and cad yellow and red. It's a lovely, soft palette with the pops of bright color if I need it. I've considered swapping the Davy's for buff titanium, it's such a useful color, but I have this weird issue with mixing my palette brands... I know plenty who do but I feel like each brand makes it's hues to go along with each other. For example if you look at various ultramarine blues they range from soft dusty denim hues to bright royal blue just depending on who makes it.. Mijellos is almost violet. My only mixed palette at the moment is my granulating palette which I never use on it's own.. I forgot about that one, it's 20 pans.

      @@waymire01 Sounds like a nice palette of colors.

    Thanks for sharing your palettes! To make paints easier to rewet (and avoid cracking), just add a drop or two of humectant, like honey and/or glycerin. Mix it into paint from the tube (I use a toothpick). It will not harm the paint nor lightfastness as these ingredients can be found in professional watercolors.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  Před 2 lety +1

    • @MaryPrasadArt
      @MaryPrasadArt Před 2 lety

      @@JayNathanWatercolor I've had several paints that dried too hard, esp. some of the Daniel Smith Primatek (not all though). I have the 238 dot card so it really helped me determine how easy they would rewet without putting them in the pan first. I also find that W&N paints (not just Cotman) tend to crack a lot, especially the gouache. M Graham paints already have honey in them (and Sennelier but I only have dried a few) - they take a long time to "dry" (most never fully dry because there's so much humectant). You have to be careful in storing them - flat only! Otherwise they may run out of their pans. But they are a dream to work with - super highly pigmented and rewet beautifully.

    I just got the 12 pan narrow Schminke tin, just for the tin, of course there are dupes in it, but that is ok. It is mostly offered as a special edition with the student garde watercolours, but CASS ART has it with Horadam half pans. It has an inner flap and lots of wells, and I can just see how it would be a delight to use outdoors. I only rarely if ever do this though, the pandemic put paid to that…. It is one of three palettes that I have specifically for outdoors, the other two are also from CassArt, under their own branding, but they are a rebrand of the better known Daler Rowney 18 colour quarter pan Fome box, very nice paint selection, and sometimes a steal when on special offer. I got mine in 2018 before art material prices started to go crazy… I dream of days in the sun under a nice shady tree, painting to my hearts content. Not sure if that is going to happen so these three boxes are definitely more because I love the boxes than anything else.
    Ps. I also have a couple of really tiny palettes I made for myself with those little earbud boxes similar to the apple ones. They hold a LOT of pigments in tiny quarter pans I bought online. They have a transparent base and the white lid acts as a tiny mixing palette. I use this for little experimental thumbnails in a small notebook, I can do them in the paints I envision using later, so they have some rather nice paints in them in tiny quantities. Oh, and I got got that I have two of those little ‘whiskey painter’ style boxes by Fome, not the fancy ones with the whiskey container thing, the plain ones that will hold 12 half pans. I have DS primateks in one and Schmincke in another…… and yes I would love that gorgeous brass box too! And one of those handmade brass ones from India too, preferably in racing green….. one can dream….

    Palettes! Another addiction inside the watercolour rabbit hole...
    I have to admit, I have a few. I find I use them less often these days, as I prefer to take fresh paint out of the tube and put a blob in an old ceramic bowl or small dish or enamel oven dish if I need lots of paint.
    However, for plein air painting, such as urban sketching, they are very useful. Lately, I've made my own "mini-palletes" from souvenir soap containers. I have them set up like this:
    1. 3x Kuretake large pans for primaries. I have two of these, using different primaries. The bigger pans enable larger brushes to be used and they help me to focus more on mixing colours and blending.
    2. 6× standard half-pans for secondaries
    3. 8x standard half-pans: blues & greens
    5. 8x standard half-pans for reds
    6. 8x standard half-pans for earths
    I also use the single "group colour" palettes to paint value sketches sometimes - it teaches me a lot about the different types of each colour.
    Depending on what I'm going to paint, I take 1 or more of these small palettes with me, which are easy to fit into a small bag with a few brushes, tissue paper, collapsible water cup and a few sketch pencils and pens - plus a pad of paper, of course.

    I don't hoard palettes but I hoard paint..so I need to be able to switch colors easily and mess-free. Until recently I was only using the tin palettes, it allowed me to swap pans easily. I mod my pans with magnetic tape so that they stick to the palette. But...last year I got a Mijello fusion 18-well palette and I loved the fact that I could use larger brushes, it was so comfortable. Since I still had so much of my paint in pans, I had to find a way to include them. @@JayNathanWatercolor The mixing areas are enameled and then there are 2 spots on the water container for mixing as well. You have 5 seperate mixing spaces which I think is great. The ones on the water container are recessed so that gives you the space for watery mixes. Full or half pans fit. Its not like the original where the pans were part of the insert, this new one just comes with a holder tray and you use your own pans. I think its wonderfully balanced when holding it and painting with a block balanced in my lap. The thing you might not like is the water pots are small so you need to use a smaller brush. I'd say size 8-10 (looking at my silver and princeton brushes) is the biggest you could fit into it. I didn't want to get myself one in case I got bored of watercolor and stopped painting.
      I thought about getting myself one as a reward once I've been painting for 5 years which will be in 2024. So maybe if I order now it will be shipped to me by then? 🤣

    Huge thanks for your video, pleased I stumble upon it - really made me chuckle! It reminded me when I started using western watercolours - so much variation on quality of paints, brands within brands, separation of "professional" vs "student grade", cheap tins vs lacquer palettes (huge price discrep), lack of standardised brush sizes/terminology...the products you show are from East Asia? Recognise a lot of them! Especially the baby blue empty tin palette, the flimsy "mia" palette - sadly, can't get those in a UK store!

    Sigh, hold my beer, lol! I really must stop purchasing so many art supplies just to satisfy my curiosity and indulge my fantasy that I'm one product away from the perfect set-up. I must be getting some nice dopamine rushes when I make the purchases, when I receive the items and again when I first try them out. 12 Step Program: "Hi . . . my name is Jessie and I'm a palette addict". • @fizzywyg

    LOL, completely relate to the search for the perfect palette. I started with a John Pike, just switched to a Liz Deakin, got fed up with my warm and cool washes getting into each other. Can be great, usually not though in my experience. I also have a Clover Leaf. Both serve different purposes in the studio, both have deep mixing wells for big washes and the cools and warms stay separate, sort of. For plein air sketching I have two palettes a little cheap Van Gogh 15 half pan and the Frazer Price, a birthday gift from a loving wife. The Frazer Price is a thing of beauty and I love it. But, it's a bit chunky, well it would be being brass, it's also a chunky box shape that doesn't fit snugly into my bag or pocket. My entire sketching kit fits into an A5/6-ish size pencil case including my cheap VG palette, so guess which one is always in use. The palette I truly covet is the Fletcher Watson Studio Palette from Little Brass Box, but at that price I'm going to have to stick with the Deakin and the Clover Leaf for the foreseeable future. The old steel Holbein would have been a good second choice, but sadly defunct and I'm not a fan of aluminium palettes so have steered clear of the cheaper copies available. Great channel btw, just discovered you.

    @Jay Nathan Watercolor my first ever watercolours were Van Gogh 15 colour "travel palette", which I still use today. Although, I now fill it with different paints: a mixture of Daniel Smith and W&N.
    I have 2 of those 24 half-pan black metal palettes - one I use 23 colours - all St. Petersburg Lazoya range. As these are larger pans, I squeeze some down the middle too! The other has a mixture of standard half-pans (with a mixture of paints from Daniel Smith, W&N and Van Gogh) and some Lazoya range to give a selection of primaries, secondaries, earths and neutrals - so far it seems to be my most balanced palette (if there is such a thing 😀).
    I've been tempted by the large aluminium Holbein pallete and the John Pike large mixing area one you have, but they would just take up too much space in my small art area in a spare bedroom, so I decided not to buy them. I have a selection of small (3, 6 or 8 colours) palletes made using small empty soap souvenir or throat lozenger tins. I have a few plastic palettes which I use to try out set ups. They're well used now, so the staining helps to stop beeding- although I took the shine off with light sandpaper when I first used them. I have 3 porcelain palettes which I use more when taking paint straight from the tube for a specific painting project. So basically, I am suffering from POS - pallete overload syndrome, the bane of many newbie watercolour painter...

    If anyone is unaware, because I wasn't for the longest time, you can try some things to help keep your from beading-up on your palette, in the mixing areas: 1. wipe a layer of ox gall over your surface, 2. buff with fine-grain sandpaper, or I've heard, 3. buffing with white toothpaste should also work. Honestly, the toothpaste method didn't seem to do so much when I tried it. I may not have scrubbed it enough. Personally, I've had the most success with the ox gall!
    *You can also try a "Mr. Clean" magic eraser, (in the United States & Canada,) to clean up palette stains.
    I haven't gotten a new palette in quite a long time. I think I'm happy with the 11 that I have, which is still too many. 😆
