    Just a handy tip! If you want to "renew" your stained enamel palettes, you can actually buy white enamel in a spray can and refinish the palette! Make sure you go outside where there is plenty of ventilation. Spray the enamel in thin layers, and let them dry between. Then let it "cure" for 24-48 hours. Ta-Da! Like new :)

    Great video! Thank you. I use the Meeden black metal boxes and I super glue thin magnetic strip tape under the pans so they don’t move around. Usually magnet strip tape with a magnet power value of 3 (I’m sure different companies have differ value scales for how powerful they rate their magnet tape) is more than strong enough to keep them in place.

    My watercolor teacher in high school had me use a limited palette of 10 colors. I used Grumbacher Academy & stuck with it for 8yrs getting the most of the decent quality paint. I am now upgrading to Da Vinci & decided i wanted 32 of their 120 paints lol. Im going to phase them in so i can experiment with the new colors as i get them rather than flooding myself. Even though the Academy paints were pretty good i LOVE how easy the DVs are to rewet. I never realized my paints were semi dificult to rewet till i tried "professional" ones lol

I loved hearing about your palette (and painting) journey! :)

      @alejandromorales9516 Před 6 lety +1

      I normally wash my brushes with water, but every so often I will use this soap and once clean, I will roll the brush in the soap, form a point, and let them dry like that. I read the Master's Brush conditions brush fibers and helps maintain (or regain) a point. You just rinse the brush in clean water and get the soap out before you paint again.

I dont know if that helps perhaps you have already learned that by now but just in case I thought I would tell you

    Some half pans are smaller than the average half pan I always have trouble with the high end watercolour paint and there can be such a difference in sizes. Also, you haven't bent the metal clip thingy lol far enough forward. You are also using a 48 pan set to hold 18 paints the pallet are meant to be full that way you don't have the pans swimming around. Hope this helps.

    Fyi for the meeden palette and any other palette that the pans slide. This works for every single one. You have to push the metal side in and them put thw pan down forat on th we aolid metal part and then "click" it into the metal piece that can bend. Thats the trick w those. I actually got that from lindsay The frugal crafter. Hope this helps someone! Have a great day !

      They have a good range of colors that are often chosen as the classic landscape colors. Have you ever used Holbein before? It can be a strange beast if you are used to paints like Daniel Smith and Sennelier. Holbein has no ox gall in them so they stay put pretty much where you put them.

    QUESTION: When you use the little inexpensive plastic palettes, do you worry about the paints being housed on both sides? That's one reason I have avoided them... I'm worried about the dry paints falling out OR wet paints dripping, (or even the mixing areas dripping, as I do often use my palette box mixing areas, and save the paint in it sometimes) and I don't always take time for the palette to dry before putting it away. I love the idea of lots of inexpensive little ones for different brands or different uses. Right now I keep a full pan of every color I have in one big wooden box (but with a magnetic sheet on the bottom) and remove pans to a different palette box as I want to use them in a group. Also, I use (when I want a large divided area) a large white ceramic deviled egg plate I found at a thrift store as a mixing palette.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  Před 6 lety

      I've never had that problem. I mostly use Daniel Smith and Holbein and they are both very good at keeping stay put. I do always leave my palettes to dry over night though.

      Oto Kano thanks!! Maybe I will just try one and see! I love the idea of using an inexpensive palette and setting up different color sets. I almost hate committing to 12 or 18 because i like changing them up. I do the same thing and pop the blobs out and just squish them back into another pan of color, so have some strangely lumpy pans here and there :-)

    Love seeing people's palettes! 😍 Have you ever used/tried the Holbein metal palettes? I realy like those, but they are sooo expensive. (They may not be in Japan, though.) I personally hardly use any plastic palettes because they stain too much and it bothers me. I must admit that I'm a palette hoarder, I like special editions, but I always tend to use the same few ones. My absolute favourites are actually procelain plates, haha. The small 12-half-pan Medeen palette I bought was a failure. It rattles when I use it, and I've got the same problem as you do with the pans not snapping in securely no matter how much I bend those clamps down. I originally bought it because I wanted to put my basic set of Daniel Smith paints into 6 full pans and use them as a limited palette. But I find that I always pull the pans out when I want to paint, because that rattling and sliding around of the pans drives me crazy.
    Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing! I enjoyed your video al lot! 🌺

Although the one you discoverd might be the aluminium version? I bought the enamelled steel palette years ago at Jacksonart and I remember paying about 70,- or 80,- £ which was a huge investment. But I really like that palette. It only has 24 wells and 5 mixing spaces, and it's quite heavy. Pity Jacksonart seem to have stopped stocking them since quite some time.
      Found a link to my version, and it's about the same price I bought it all those years ago: www.amazon.co.uk/5-5x12-Holbein-Enamelled-Folding-Palette/dp/B001NARKNG

      Oh, and yes, those Medeen palettes! 😡 They're just not worth it. Waste of material and money. They might look the part, but they're clearly not the same as the originals sold by Schmincke, Sennelier and others. (Although I do think those companies buy their palettes from them same place and just print their logo on them. I believe that palette-maker is called FOME and originates in Italy. I couldn't find a link, but I remember having discovered them quite a while ago while I was looking for a heavyweight palette similar to the old W&N palette.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. Is there any effect in the quality of artwork, if I will put my paint in my pallete and then use it late?

      you can totally do that. That's what watercolors are designed to do.

    The pallet that you said you keep on your desk at all time that you got from jacksons. I have a couple of those. I love them. I don't use them to mix in either. I went to Ikea and I got a couple of beautiful (and inexpensive) square white plates. I love just them for mixing. I got a larger one and a smaller/medium sized one. I enjoy mixing on these plates. You can really see the true colors on them and no staining. Thank you for sharing all of your lovely palettes. I'm a bit green as I would love to have that many...lol I'm too much of a novice to have that many all though, my collect is growing a bit. As envious as I am of all of those yummy pallets I am glad that I am sticking to the basics for the time being as I learn to mix colors better and get what I can out of the cool primaries and the warm primaries. When I graduate in a level or two I am sure that I will go a bit crazier and start accumulating more and more brands and colors!! Thank you so much for sharing all of these pallets. BTW, I am curious when you say you retire them. I noticed that you said that you will add certain colors to other pallets, but what do you do with your retired pallets? Do you stow them away, give them away, or sell them? I was just curious since you said that you retire fairly quickly. Thanks again!!

      With the old retired palettes, I clean them up and store them away for future use. (Unless I am retiring the palettes themselves because they're all worn, beyond help or just wasn't working for me. In which case I either bin, or pass them on.)

      Abigail Adebisi I'd go for White Nights

      Meda Halmaciu would the sonnet watercolors be good

    • @MedaHalmaciu
      @MedaHalmaciu Před 6 lety +1

      Abigail Adebisi Yes. I believe they would. They are transparent, well pigmented and have a nice flow. I think the difference is they lack more expensive pigments but as Otto mentioned too many colors can be overwhelming for a beginner. So on this idea instead of lots of cheaper paints I would get a good quality 20 color palette and master those.

      Abigail, I've heard lots of great things about Van Goghs and White Nights. I haven't used them myself though. It also depends on what's cheap in your country. What country do you live in?

      I can second 20. It is a good upper limit for a beginner's palette.
