    I use the portable palette on a small writing desk for my watercolor journal. I keep my pencil, pen, and a couple of travel brushes in one cup, and put water in the other. I keep a folded rag underneath. It never gets folded up completely--I just close the mixing areas. I LOVE it for that purpose. My whole setup stays in a tiny footprint.

    Seeing those fiddly palettes makes me appreciate my own even more! I’ve just got 15 half pans with magnets in an Altoids tin. I added a mobile phone thumb ring to the back and it works brilliantly for me. I like the look of the etchr one but I would get so annoyed with the felt pads and swatch sheet blowing away and juggling the tin plus 2 palettes plus water etc. I’m sure I’d love it if I was painting at a table, but to me, it doesn’t look very practical for painting outside. Thanks for sharing

    I love the Pocket Palette. I took the plunge and bought the new Folio palette which is larger. They also partner with Greenleaf and Blueberry paints (local for me)! Beautiful paints!

    I love portable palettes so much! I'm very into pans with wells right now, but one pan palette I'll always love is the QoR Mini - it's such a great design, and if you don't use the silicone insert for mixing space you can take it out and fit a ton of pans in there! I only took it out to try, but it made me so happy to find out I had the option.
    The small round ceramic palette has been on my wish list ever since I saw it too, I'll get one someday! Hopefully soon 😅

    There is a brass palette that is like your compact credit card one, by maker Tirra Lyra on Etsy. She also enamels her pans, and it is also magnetic. The Tirra Lyra is engraved on the front.

    What a journey. I too went through several of these palettes. You saved me from getting the cheapo one🤣 Something I think you cofounder useful is oil removes Phathlo stains from your palette and might work on the QOR and the Art Tool palette.

    I love this video, probably because I own most of the same palettes. I love the idea of the Cup Easel, but found the watercolor wells problematic. The 12 is too deep and small, the 6 and 9 too few colors, so I end up taking spare cups along. Lately I’ve been using the Cup Easel with a Schmincke square tin instead. The magnets hold it in place well. Love, love the Qor mini. And just started using the Art Tool-kit palette and like the size for urban sketching. I do take the Portable Painter with me when traveling by air, but rarely grab it otherwise. Thanks again!

      For Canadian viewers you can get the pocket palette at the Paint Spot. Also I think a place in Spain sells them. Art toolkit just came out with a bigger size one called the folio palette. It is a little smaller than two pocket palettes.

    Thank you for the detailed reviews, Irit. Loving the palette review series. Personally I stick to my mijello 18-well palettes, modified with magnets to house pans as well (more or less like your red palette). This way I can have the best of both worlds: some tried and true color friends in the wells and the pans are "plug and play". Or the simple tin & magnetized pan combo. I sure love to move colors around a lot, every few days I change my mind about the perfect color setup that I have in mind, lol. There are so many palettes and nerdy art gear out there though, it's so nice to see them reviewed!

      @@iritlandgraf Thanks Irit, I was planning to get the red palette but I don't enjoy the metal casing for the pans. The fusion palettes were perfect for a diy-frankenpalette experiment! :) I can fit 24 full pans or 48 half pans in the mixing area, its's quite neat and tidy.

    I have that same size CUP EASAL and I use it as a tabletop easel at home - I don’t put paint in it, I just place my watercolour paper (taped to core flute) and lean it against the tilted back of the easel with the bottom of the paper leaning against the bottom half of the easel where u’d place ur paints - it’s my absolute FAVOURITE desk top easel and it’s all I use now - I paint on ¼ sheets of watercolour paper..

    Hello Irit... one of your (great) video's came up in my feed.. I've watched this before, but watching again... just wanted to say (and you no doubt already know) that Pocket Palette have a larger size palette out... I've got one and it's really nice... I can use the bigger pans (the square ones) and it's really great to work with. I don't mind the rectangular pans but the small square ones are too fiddly for me. Take care

    Irit, thank you for the informative video! FYI, the band and plastic clip that holds the portable painter together can be fastened about the middle (much in the same position of the view of the unopened palette) of one of the black plastic water reservoirs when it is open, then it does not get lost. I hope that is clear.

    Interesting the the palette you hate is highly regarded by Jane Blundell on her list of palettes. you can go over the thumb hole with a piece of plastic or acetate and fill the whole thing. They also have a half pan version. The half pan version can hold 24 plus a travel brush and is the same size. I actually have both on their way to me.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't think it's that interesting 😉 every artist has their own preferences 🤷‍♀️ I am sure the set up can work for many but the material is just horrendous IMO and feels super cheap. I'm glad it's working for others tho😊

    I think those Portable Painter palettes are really UGLY, they look clumsy & clunky. Art is beautiful and it gives me so much pleasure to create watercolour paintings and the idea of using something I find ugly would ruin the experience for me - I am very tactile and part of the joy for me of painting watercolours is using products that feel good to use and thus give me joy, like 100% cotton paper (absolute JOY), gorgeous kolinsky brushes that just seems to float on the paper, professional quality watercolours and palettes that don’t stain or bead up. I love the handmade brass watercolour palettes (mind don’t bead up or stain), white ceramic palettes or the good quality heavy metal palettes that can be cleaned of staining paints. Dipping or swirling a beautiful kolinsky brush (or any brush for that matter) onto a plastic palette is not a nice sensation for me… and a lot of people
