    I have the same habit of switching things up constantly, so I have one big palette where I can do that, but I've recently been loving the Mijello plastic palettes for the opposite reason: it forces me to get to know the colors and practice better color mixing. Personally, it's what I would recommend to beginners. I have two now, a custom 18 colors, and a Schmincke only palette, and when I grab them there's so much freedom in the limitations, no overwhelming amount of options when I'm just trying to sketch and practice. :)

      I totally relate! I find I love having many colors to choose from but I mostly paint a single painting with 5 colors, so quite a limited palette. Love mixing and creating new shades 😃 thanks for sharing Libby 😃

    I love palette tours! Thanks for pointing out that in metal palettes some do not have space in the middle that will hold additional pans. I just bought 4 different palettes, only the last one had space in the middle! I kicked myself for not paying better attention.

      @Tasmanianval Před 3 lety

      Those who don't have that much space in the middle I use them to put half pans in horizontal, in a 24 tin palette they fit like 6 or 7 half pans horizontally and i can put full size brushes if I want to travel with that.

    • @kookatsoonjan
      @kookatsoonjan Před 3 lety

      @@Tasmanianval sadly some will not even fit the half pans horizontally...and the ones that fit pans in the middle...it is usually horizoontally that you have to put them...for instance ALL schminchke 24 half pan metal tins...WILL NOT FIT anything but brushes or dabs of paint down the middle...NO HALF PANS...maybe those metal 1/4 pans tiny pans.sold on etsy stores

    The most beautiful palette I saw among the ones you showed in this video is the Schmincke heavy metal black box with 3 mixing wells… These palettes are made by Frome in Italy - they make ALL the heavy metal palettes from the 2 mixing wells up to the 4 mixing wells used by Winsor & Newton & Schmincke & possibly others for special edition sets. And yes, I believe, if looked after they will last a lifetime. I have the 2 mixing well (with the built in water compartment)palette as well as the 3 well & the 4 well palettes. They are an absolute JOY to use. I just don’t understand with palettes of these sizes, which in my opinion are small, why people have an issue with the weight of them when considering them as a travel palette. I LOOOVE beautiful, good quality palettes & art supplies as they really increase the pleasure I get from my art practice. With the 3 well palette I flattened all the metal bars so I could use full pans (I paint & mix quickly & trying to get a decent amount of pigment onto my size 8+ brushes from a ½ pan would just ruin it). These palettes are easy to clean & if they become too stained I rub whitening toothpaste into the stained area, leave it for a while and wash/rub it off and my mixing wells always come up looking beautiful and white.

      Thanks for sharing! I think weight is an issue for people simply because you carry all your equipment around🤷‍♀️ lighter is just easier...

    Love the holbein one! Yours is alluminum, I think. I have the metal one, twenty four spaces for the paint, lots of mixing space and is made from steel, so you can put more pans with magnets. It is my perfect palette! :)

    Hello Irit... thank you for the review... I love my "perfect palette" - as I've mentioned before, even though it's plastic it's very sturdy and the paints mix beautifully on the surface. As for the Schminke metal palette you have, I have one the same, but it's by Fome. Any Australian viewers can buy it from Senior Art Supplies in Melbourne (they have online shop too). I've had mine for years and it has gone up in price, but it's great quality and fantastic for travel (lid has good closure - so no chance of misadventure!). Take care... PS: Very cold here in Brisbane t the moment... love it!

    I wish I'd known how much I hate half pans before I poured so many of them! I won't pour more, but am still trying to use up the ones I have. This is why I look forward to getting my red palette soon. I can put my superstars in the wells, and then have the pans there too and use them up! I love the Japanese palette you found, thank you for linking to the similar version!

    I’ve never had an issue using basic half or basic whole pans from anywhere in my window Newton palette but maybe it’s just the one I have? I’m glad I never got the other versions if they don’t fit normal size pans! That would be so useless to me!! Lol I use the Field Box and modified it to add 3 extra pans(total of 15half pans) and added an additional mixing area onto it as well. It’s an amazing kit!! I swapped some colors and added my Daniel smith mixing set into it and it’s PERFECT now!!

    For the ones that you cannot fit an additional row in the center: I turn the pan on its side and attach a magnet to it so when I want to use it I just connect it to the metal mixing portions. Does not work for honey based wc

      turn on it's side+ the short side and not the back of the pan? would save space on the palette...but paint will run out.

    I always forget that you have some Roman Szmal Aquarius paints. I was wondering if you've tried their cobalt violet, and if so, how do you like it compared to the one by W&N? Because of their honey content I find the RS one a lot easier to rewet, so that tends to have my preference, but I'm curious about yours since you love that colour!
