  • This is a long, chatty style video. I talk about my different artist grade watercolor palettes, their pros and cons and how well they work for me. It focuses more on the palettes themselves as opposed to comparing brands of watercolor paint, but I do explain why I like or dislike ready made sets from different brands and which are the best choice, in my opinion.
    These kinds of videos are very hard to film, as they contain so much information, so please take that into account. You can always watch this video in 1.25 or 1.5 speed to make it shorter :)

    There are many options with the robax palette. Basically from 19 wells to 106, and many option in between. Well size can be half pan size to huge wells. The center insert can be changed where is countless option.
    They also work with artists to accomodate their needs if they want something special. Palette size can go from 8" to 18"
    Even has ceramic mixing insert for the center.

    Oh and I thought I'd add that I've seen some people remove the Kuretake pans (a selection for whatever they're painting at the time). But of course, you still need a mixing palette or plate. However, this would be a way to reduce the use of desk space.

    I always enjoy seeing your watercolor palettes, they look so beautiful and well-loved. The White Nights plastic palette is what I use for my studio palette and I'm really happy with it; it's the largest palette I can fit in my space and I've been able to customize it by inserting generic half pans on their side instead of the normal orientation (52 half pans will fit this way). I've looked for different palettes to replace it, but I just love the design of this one and most others are too large for my area.

    I wish I’d had this video to guide me 5 years ago, I had to buy sooooo many different palettes (and pans) before I settled on the ones that are right for me. Ditto the paint storage options, or how to store the tubes, pans that aren’t in active use! I’m finally happy with my set up- studio, travelling and quick reference storage. All logged on the Sortly app, so I can quickly see which pigments I have (and where!) when I’m watching CZcams vids. Thanks for leading us through your journey, and for lifting the lid on your gorgeous pigment stash! By the way, why are there so few coloured metal palettes available to buy? Why would people who love colour want boring black palettes!?

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 5 lety +2

      Right??? We need colorful palettes!! The reason I made this video was to help people, so they can learn from my mistakes, but there's also no replacement for one's own experience. Different things work for differnt people, so while researching is crucial, at the end of the day, one has to try things to see if they work... If one's lucky one can find a good system fast, but for some of us it takes several tries to get it right ;)

    By now I have watched quite a few of your videos, but still don't know which watercolour brand I should go for. Since I am not an artist nor wealthy I am doubting between White Nights & Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle (student grade but said to be ok). WN seems less transparent/more sedentary but as I am new to this medium I doubt whether that be a good or 'bad' thing and better buy Sennelier LPA. You or anyone any wise words? :D Thank you!

    • @arvindshukla8040
      @arvindshukla8040 Před 3 lety +1

      Hey, first of welcome to the watercolor world! Secondly id recommend White nights as it is artist grade and trust me if you're able to find them at the same price it's a steal! Sennilier is one of my all time favorite brands and their student line is also amazing! W&N is less transparent (which is a bad thing cause transparency is a characteristic of watercolor) but pretty good for student grade! If you are in particular only looking for student grade paints then l love Van Gogh, my absolute favourite student line! I'm not sure but you can probably find them on Amazon or Jackson's or pretty much any other online art store, but out of the brands you mentioned White nights is the way to go! So as a summary here's my ranking:
      1. White Nights
      2. Van Gogh (if you can find them)
      3. Sennilier LPA
      4. W&N
      Hope this is helpful! Also I'd recommend checking out the mind of watercolor, he's an awesome painter and teacher, if you have any problems with different techniques cause he has amazing explanations for them! Good luck on your Watercolor journey! And remember whatever you do DON'T join the ̶d̶a̶r̶k i mean palette addict side!

    Great video, always helpful learning likes and dislikes on palette choices. Like you I’ve enough paints to last a lifetime, but don’t regret the brand choices I have. Daniel Smith is my favorite brand out of all. I do love Sennelier as well. I need to look to see if you have a video of your favorite colors palette, I love turquoise too! I so agree White Nights is a great choice for anyone starting out instead of student grade. Thought I’d share how I use my Robax, and agree the pans are too small for larger paintings. I use the large Robax as a holder for my filled & indexed Robax pan inserts. It’s so easy to remove only the colors I’m using on a painting and return to the appropriate main Robax Wells once the painting is complete. I also have the smaller Robax to make a temporary palette made from the larger Robax. Once I’m finished with the painting, I return the pans to my large main Robax. Hope my post makes sense ??? Thanks so much for sharing!👍👍👍

      I have schmincke horadem, Winsor and Newton professional and Daniel Smith watercolors... even though w&n is a good quality I don't use them so much. as I like the easy use and pigments of schmincke more. Daniel Smith I love their 2 pigments colors as you really see both pigments but I find schmincke still easier and smoother to work with. right now I use schmincke and Daniel Smith as some colors are more saturated from Daniel Smith than in my palet from schmincke. the pigments from some Daniel Smith are to fall in love at. for me schmincke and Daniel Smith are challenged to each other and both for me bring the right balance in all colors for what I make. a recommendation to try.

      I totally agree with everything. I LOVE Schmincke, the formula is unbeatable in my opinion, especially with the pan paints. Luscious, pigmented, perfect. Daniel Smith have an unmatchable shade range, especially when it comes to their unique natural pigments, if one loves granulation paints (which I do), a few from DS are an absolute must!

      Haha are we addressing the class?? I don't know. I do a lot of mixing... I also know artists who rarely mix in a palette and let the colors mix on their paintings. Some stick to a very limited palette and some use a large variety of pigments and paints, constantly trying new ones. I think as long as one has a good knowledge of colour theory, how many paints one uses is not that significant. Whatever works for you!

    I get an uneasy feeling about the Aquarius range. The company doesn't seem to have a website, and it's not clear whether it's possible to buy a dot card, and if so, then how to buy it. The paints may well be good, I have nothing to say for or against them, but the whole setup is like a hush-hush undercover mission. Sure, Jackson's sell them, but the vendor can't take the place of the manufacturer, so to even try to make this brand a significant component of the daily paint setup, I personally would like to obtain and swatch a dot card and have a good close look at all their paints. If anyone knows how to get a dot card, please tell me too. I'll love you forever for it! :-)

    me, i just do two plates ( small ones ) ... for my mixing, and for the toilet paper to dry the brush! I don't need these "fancy" ceramics!, too big for my table ...

      I wish I could be a minimalist! I really believe it allows one to focus more on creating and less on collection supplies.

      @@BeckyTregear they are nuts... it can be send out way cheaper.. on the other hand.. what I seen its delivered by a world wide company that delivers within 3/5 days overseas and the palet is from porcelain.. which is somewhat fragile and heavy.. that makes it probably so expensive to deliver overseas countries.

      Ouch Rebecca!! But I do think that's just the cost of shipping these days (annoying for us, but not up to retailers...), and it is affected by weight and size, these palettes can get big when wrapped. I've had a really good experience with the company, they were very responsive, so I don't think they are making any extra $$ on shipping... I'm so sorry to recommend something that is not available to everyone around the world! I treated myself to mine for a birthday, and now that I'm considering getting a smaller one, I will wait till I am in the US to make a final decision, as I also don't want to spend so much money on shipping. I also think that while this is definitely not a cheap option, if one has the budget, and already experience with palettes, a long time painter, that can pretty confidently say this system is the right one for their studio (+ travel options), it might still be a good purchase. A good palette can last you decades and make painting easier and more pleasurable. So in that perspective, a practivally once in a lifetime buy, I think it's worth considering. Having said all that, there are other options that are much much more affordable and work well for many people.

      @@iritlandgraf To be fair, I think it is just US international shipping in general that's expensive, not just from one specific company like Robax. Plus our exchange rate is pretty terrible too, so it worked out at around AU$300 in total for the big set, lol! Such is life....I'm still interested to see such products, and I've no issues with you showing the cool things you have, from local companies. It's not like my studio will currently fit that huge palette wheel anyway, not without some serious tidying up first, haha!
