  • Part 2 is out now! Click here: • My Entire Watercolour ...
    After talking about it for a while now, I finally managed to film all of my watercolours, including tubes, pans and palettes. I think that collecting watercolours is a hobby unto itself, and there is definitely a lot of joy to be had in obtaining new colours and trying out different brands of paints.
    My video ended up being so long that I decided it would be better in two parts, and I am putting them up a few days apart so there is time to digest all of the information without having to commit 80 minutes in one go. If you would like to watch both parts together, the second video is out now :-)
    Paint brands included in this video:
    Pebeo (worst paints ever!)
    Viviva/Etchr
    Zart Art
    Creative Pl (Aldi)
    Kuretake Gansai Tambi
    Saint Petersburg White Nights
    Jane Davenport
    Prima Marketing Confections
    Winsor & Newton
    Holbein
    Art Spectrum
    Maimeri Blu
    Eraldo de Paolo
    My own handmade paints
    Stay tuned for Part 2 which will feature the big brands and the much larger sets.

    Thanks for sharing! I have a pretty big collection of watercolors myself and lately I found the unmanageable amount quite frustrating. I now believe that my palettes should inspire me and help me make better art. I started decluttering and getting rid of pallets and paints I didn't fully enjoy or couldn't use for certain purposes (like paints with very low lightfastness that you can't be used for paintings outside your sketchbook). I managed to sell some and others I gave away to friends who wanted to try painting. The process is far from over but even now that I have fewer paints, I love and enjoy my collection even more and really like the studio space I was able to free up.
    I wonder if I am the only artist out there who feels uncomfortable knowing they have paints in the drawer that aren't being used\well loved...

      Oh yes, I get that feeling too! I have a bit more than I can handle right now, but during this year I plan to sort them out a bit more, and organise my Daniel Smith and Schmincke collections as I have ended up with more tubes and they're pretty much everywhere at the moment, haha! It's a hobby in itself, sorting paints. 😂

      I am currently cataloging my tube and pan watercolors I have been collecting since 2016, especially the professional paints I have purchased the last three years. It doesn't help that I'm a collector as far as my personality goes. Yes, I have too many watercolor tubes. Yes, I have more than I can use. Yes, I have been indulgent and have overspend. But I have a wonderful collection which is being reorganized for a very large color wheel palette (Robax) and smaller artist-recommended palettes. I feel overwhelmed at times. But 2023 will bring more frugality on my part, for sure. I appreciate your sharing about this subject.😊

They're hard to find in the States, but I have seen Art Spectrum pastels and pastel paper here. It was great to see your eyeshadow palette for the Maimeri Blu paints. I tried that same thing and after spending a ton of time cleaning it up and getting it ready to be a great travel palette, the hinge broke!!! I'm looking forward to part 2 :)

    Thank you for sharing your watercolor collection! If you don't want your tube paints that put in pans to crack, just add a couple drops of humectant, like honey or vegetable glycerin - mix with toothpick. The humectant helps make them more easily wettable as well. It will not harm the paints - as these ingredients are found in many professional watercolors already (just got to the end of the video and see you have made paints with them! you can add them to your other tube paints as well). To keep pans in place, you may either add magnets to the bottom of the pans (if the palette is metal) or a bit of wall tack (e.g. Blu Tack) to the bottom. The best price I have found for M. Graham watercolors is for their sets - I bought mine on Amazon. I'm not sure if the US Amazon will ship to Oz (?) but you could try. Note that they have a lot of honey in them and may not dry enough for you to use in a travel set. There are places in the US where they will not dry due to the humidity, and they will actually slowly drip out of the pans over time if not stored level.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you! I have tried glycerine and it worked well especially in the Art Spectrums. Amazon US I think still ships to Australia, but only on some products, and is usually pretty expensive. I actually found some M Graham paints locally and I've made a rather long video about them too. Mine won't fully set either, even though it is usually dry here. They're really lovely though! My next video will be a painting with them. 🙂

    I am trying to get back into art and have been watching lots of reviews. It's great to have some artists based in Australia on CZcams. I see so many artists saying get this, it's great and it's really cheap and then you try to look for it here, or look at getting it shipped here, and it costs a fortune.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před 3 lety +1

      I totally agree; almost everything is so expensive to get here, especially when international shipping is involved! We are plodding along, the lockdown just keeps on going but at least our numbers are dropping significantly at last!

    • @mariannemcdiarmid3802
      @mariannemcdiarmid3802 Před 3 lety

    • @mariannemcdiarmid3802
      @mariannemcdiarmid3802 Před 3 lety

      Also, I see some stuff on Amazon which is about $20 US. When you go to the Australian Amazon it is about $45 and then you need to add shipping (if you can actually find it on the Australian site). It's really frustrating. I don't know how they can justify it, even after you take into account GST and the exchange rate.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před 3 lety +2

      @@mariannemcdiarmid3802 It's tough! The most reasonably priced store that we have here in Melbourne is theartshop.com.au (they're still shipping interstate) and also Jackson's Art in the UK usually has decent postage to Australia. Basically avoid anything coming from the USA because shipping from there is horrendous. An exception is Jet Pens who have reasonable FedEx prices. Oh and when you look at Aussie websites, quite a lot have free shipping if you order over a certain amount. Amazon is ok if you buy things that are valid for free shipping. I hope that helps a bit 🙂

    • @mariannemcdiarmid3802
      @mariannemcdiarmid3802 Před 3 lety

      I find one of the big issues is that a lot of the Australian shops will only stock a small range so I end up needing to look at 3 different shops to get the things I want and then don't qualify for free shipping. I am looking at Jackson's as they seem to be the most reasonably priced.
      We have a local art store and I do like to support local places where I can but the owners aren't always the nicest people to deal with and they don't have an online store. It's also really overpriced and almost every time I have purchased from them they have overcharged on an item too.

So it is nice to see someone elses collection. Once I have my studio room organized I plan to go through all my paints. I love that you found that thing for tube storage.
