I've lived in the US for 15 years as an immigrant and still can't get used to ice in water. It's incredibly bad for your stomach. Instead, I request hot water with lemon and people look at me like I'm crazy. So I love it when I'm in Italy there is no such thing as ice in water 😅. In New York, it's incredibly common for waiters to hand you the check half way through your meal and it usually comes with a "no rush" (with a fake smile😂). I certainly appreciate not being rushed in Italy and the rest of Europe, but it's often confusing where to pay (is it at the table, over at the counter or somewhere in between 😄?). In the place (in puglia) where I am italians do drink water or coffee with ice. Because it is hot.
Don't know about of they can ask it in restaurant. also I don't get, of you don't like iced water why are you trying to get used to it anyway?
@@VIProach I'm not trying to get used to it - it's an expression in English I guess, It means I've never accepted the idea. If I "got used to it", it means I accepted it and it became a habit of mine as well. I will never try to get used to iced water haha :) I can understand drinking water and coffee with ice in the summer, but in the US, they give you iced cold water in the winter!

I found so many things in common (relax time when you go to a restaurant, etc.), with my country and also some specific differences that sounds kinda weird to me 😅 (restaurants closed after 4pm., we eat whenever we actually want to and we expect the restaurants to be open.). Ciao dalla Grecia!!

Anni fa, quando mi sono recato nella bassa Cabilia, se non mettevo sul bancone una cento Lire assieme allo scontrino ricevuto dalla cassa, non mi preparavano il caffè. Sperimentato nel buffet di Battipaglia (vi ricordate il famoso Accelerato di Battipaglia?) ed altri. Comunque sia, anche quelli del buffet della Gare de Lyon non scherzavano; se non posavo una moneta da FF 1 sul bancone, niente caffè e croissant 🥐
❤I was aware of a lot of these rules but only because I have been to Italy a few times and most recently last summer for almost two months. I agree that tourists should respect a country’s norms and not expect things to be like at “home.” I have seen people get angry or upset about things being different from their home country and that is rude in my opinion. Do not travel if you do not want to experience the different ways people live around the world. One thing I don’t think Teacher Stefano mentioned and that I just learned last summer is that chicken and pasta do NOT go together in Italy. In America there are a lot of pasta dishes with chicken on restaurant menus. I made the mistake of requesting chicken in a pasta dish. Mamma Mia! I’m surprised I did not get kicked out. It's highly good to learn the culture of a country while learning its language simultaneously. In this wein, the video is quite useful. Amazingly useful video, Stefano! I've already heard about the cappucino rule, but the way you explained cemented the rule! I have traveled extensively in Italy, and restaurants that open early are not necessarily traps for tourists. What I do look for is a smaller size menu written in Italian. You can easily ask if needed for any translations.

Sull'ultimo punto aggiungerei: in Italia i fast food americani raramente fanno presa, sia per l'esagerata quantità di luoghi italiani che servono cibo tradizionale, sia perché è spesso visto come dannoso e non fa parte della nostra cultura - tranne McDonald's, che ha capito che all'italiano piace mangiare ingredienti ricercati e soprattutto CON CALMA.
Da McDonald's in italia prendi il segnaposto numerato, ti servono al tavolo con calma, ti rilassi e ti fai una chiacchiera con gli amici, e ogni singolo ingrediente ha un buon sapore :)

When I was in Sicily (Lipari to be exact) I had spaghetti with clams. I made the mistake of asking for some parmesan cheese to sprinkle over it. The woman who owned the tiny restaurant with her husband replied, "Absolutely not!" She was nice but very firm with me. We had a good laugh about it because we had eaten at her restaurant every night. Boy did I learn something. No parmesan cheese with clams. Does this apply to anything related to the sea? Parmesan and seafood do not go together? In Sicily hardly anyone speaks English at all so it was extremely helpful to have learned Italian before I went over. And it was also very helpful to me that hardly anyone spoke English. I was forced to use my juvenile Italian and it was so much fun. The people in Sicily were so nice to us. 5 weeks in Sicily. A dream come true.

In Bulgaria we also go to restaurant in order to relax, you also need to ask for your bill and the red wine is never cold. But the restaurants are always open. Also, you can't order tap water in a restaurant and you never actually get served a beverage with ice, unless you ask for it. Here you're not obligated to tip, but still it's highly recommended and considered as a good manner.
In Italy, waiters are paid like any other worker and are not considered servants. Tipping demeans work and makes those who have the money and can afford to give it feel good and superior.
@@giorgiodifrancesco4590 here is basically the same, the waiters get paid the same way as any other worker, but it’s normal for the waiters to not give you the change if it’s 0,50lv-5lv (depends on the restaurant and your bill)- they would normally take it as a tip themselves.

La prima cosa che ho pensato è: guarda che bravo, parla lentamente e in modo chiaro, è un ottimo esercizio per gli stranieri che stanno imparando la lingua, poi ho cambiato la velocità a 1,25x e mi è sembrato più normale :)

I ristoranti aperti alle 16 lo sono anche alle 21. Sul concetto trappola non saprei. Spesso i turisti cercano piatti standardizzati tipo pizza o spaghetti alla bolognese. Quindi è probabile che finiscano comunque a mangiare negli stessi ristoranti aperti alle 16.
Un aspetto che mi pare tu abbia trascurato sono le insalate. Anni fa i turisti restavano spiazzati dal fatto che, quando ordinavano un'insalata si vedevano recapitare quattro foglie di lattuga e tre fette di pomodoro. Adesso esistono le insalate servite come piatto, più ricche e abbondanti, ma non tutti i ristoranti le prevedono nel menù. Paradossalmente sono proprio i ristoranti turistici ad avercele più spesso.

A New York una persona mi ha fatto i complimenti per le scarpe che indossavo, e questa abitudine che hanno gli americani l'apprezzo, anche a Londra anni fa si sono complimentati con mia moglie perché indossava una pelliccia sintetica, ma molto veritiera. Per le trappole per turisti, non credo che i ristoranti che invitano ad entrare siano tutti di scarsa qualità, quella è una abitudine delle città turistiche. A casa mia nord il più delle volte si cena alle ore 19.00 e in Alto Adige anche alle 18,30, alle ore 21.00 d'estate esco per una passeggiata o un gelato

7:34 dipende dal locale, se è tipo bar-pizzeria, se è all'aperto, se siamo d'agosto, il cameriere te lo chiede se vuoi del ghiaccio nel bicchiere... oltre che la scorzetta di limone. Ma giusto per una bibita come la cocacola... non per l'acqua.... tanto meno per il vino! 😂
Thanks so much for your videos - I've just recently come across your channel and it's great for practicing my listening and comprehension - you speak very clearly and slow enough for me to be able to follow most of it.
I've come across other Italians online saying the same thing about cappuccino. I've never come across any of them giving an actual reason for it... and you don't either. At least with the wine example you gave a reason.... but no reason for the cappuccino thing except... we just don't do that here and you can expect to be harshly judged for it. That's not a reason 🤣 ...Honestly, this rule with seemingly no reason attached to it makes it sound like Italians are quite rigid, judgemental, and rude. I'm sure that's not the case overall, but this particular type of thing definitely gives that impression, sadly.
I would be interested in hearing if there's an actual explanation for it that makes sense 😊

@@justasomeone7860 There is actually a reason. In Italy breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. So you have to eat and drink something with a lot of calories to have enough energies to approach the day. Breakfast in Italy is always sweet, generally speaking a "cornetto" with a coffee or cappuccino. So cappuccino is considered quite a heavy drink to have for example in the afternoon or evening just right before going to bed, because there is milk and sugar and therefore very hard to digest. This is the main reason and I think it makes sense.
And, tbh, there is also an unspoken secret about it. We all know this secret but never talk about it, especially with strangers or foreigners (because it is quite embarassing).
Basically It's that milk (and sometimes also coffee) helps you to go to the bathroom (not urine, you know what I mean), so if you drink it in the middle of the afternoon while working or walking then there could be a problem bc you would have to run back home to do your business in the bathroom. Therefore it is also considered inconvenient.
