First time I've tried this, sealing a vent for an old gas fire. Had an old piece of hardwood and followed your instructions. The first coat looks good I would have liked to have seen how taped around.

You cut your fill in piece but leave about an extra inch of the paper surrounding the fill in, mud all edges then pop it in and finish as usual. The paper removes the need for tape. It may not be as strong for big patches but for small ones it may be a time saver!
That’s called a California patch. They come in handy for small repairs where you can’t place back support. I may do a video on this if people are interested 👍

I’ll report back in a few days lol Update: I actually used a metal net I found in Home Depot but used the same technique to patch the hole and it matched perfectly no one ever found out about the hole.
