  • In Nigeria, thousands of young people are addicted to codeine cough syrup - a medicine that’s become a street drug.
The Nigerian senate estimates that 3 million bottles of codeine syrup are drunk every day in just two states - Kano and Jigawa.
But who makes this syrup? And who sells it to Nigeria’s students?
BBC Africa Eye went undercover to investigate.

BBC News Africa thank you for this documentary. Clearly the pharmaceutical companies shown don't care as it all comes down to making money. They don't care about the consumers health! I'm so sorry that this is a problem, I had no idea that this abuse was even a problem or that it was so dangerous. Sadly it won't be dealt with as long as corruption and bribery is common

      BBC News Africa
Pharmaceutical companies ARE drugs barons. Look at the Purdue Pharma / Sackler dynasty, profiting from the opiate epidemic and trying to cover their tracks with "charitable associations".
The question that ought to be tackled is, "What makes these people so desperate and hopeless?" Their society isn't failing to curb drug abuse, it is simply FAILING. And prohibition *has never, EVER worked*. Your sensationalist, benevolent patrician perspective is old and unconvincing. "Good grief! These plebs have everything they could possibly want, and STILL they self-abuse." We've heard it all before.
Patronising bullshit. Still, always nice to have an excuse to ramp up policing budgets and criminalise the populace while allowing corporate profits from drug sales to soar and ignoring treatment options. Fucking pathetic. You're corporate shills and have no idea of it. Journalism should illuminate, not titillate. Shame on you.

This drug is freely available in Britain yet if I get caught with the cannabis I use for chronic pain/an eating disorder/depression/anxiety that can't kill anybody and is at most only psychologically addictive I could go to prison. How the hell is a natural product that kills cancer cells, lowers blood pressure, stops seizures, eases pain and has improved the lives of millions illegal but you can walk into an off-license, not even a pharmacy, and buy a bottle of syrup that is far too palatable and could easily kill you in one session. How on earth does that make sense?
Big Pharma is responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths. Nearly all street drugs, including heroin, were created by pharmaceutical companies but it is the victims (addicts) that get punished whilst companies like Bayer continue making money. How did everyone just forget they were responsible for unleashing such a scourge on the world? Why are they allowed to continue operating, but an old lady with cancer giving her plants away gets a prison sentence???

Probably because they allowed their faces to be shown. I don't get what's so "lol" about "African drug lords", cocaine floods into Europe via Africa, heroin comes to N. America through Africa, same with Khat, hashish - while more benign they generate cash all the same. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find African countries getting into methamphetamine production especially if production decreases in Mexico/central America. There's cocaine/crack and heroin throughout Nigeria on the east and Kenya on the west, S. Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Liberia, Somalia.. gotta be pretty naive or stupid to think they're just good hearted volunteers

I have no idea what foreign country produces the most, there's a lot of domestic varieties along with staples like Afghan, Moroccan and Lebanese. Just based on the Title of this I want to say that my theory on Codeine addiction is understandable when ppl are forced to live in horrible conditions. I myself was once addicted to Vicodin during a very ,very bad time in my life and those pills made it bearable for me. They made me feel good in spite of all the things that were taking place in my life. This drug numbs pain, physical and emotional. So ,for all of the ppl in the world now hooked on this drug should tell us something. And that is ,people are miserable with the way things are and how they are forced to live.I am not condoning the use,,just saying that I understand it.Happy ppl who live good lives and have good jobs are usually not the ones using this drug.I feel for these ppl who are desperate for happiness.

So articulately said and a great point, many, many people are so darn unhappy. If the rich are killing themselves, I think we have done pretty well to be still alive. Nothing is hidden from the pharmaceutical companies and was it not 60,000 bottles sold per day? I would of thought these pharmaceuticals would be wondering why so many sick people but they know why but couldn't care less, as long as the drugs are selling???

It's sad to see that addiction has reached the four corners of the earth.
No matter what we are human beings and no one deserves to suffer such!!
I have to admit tears came to my eyes when they told about that young man passing away.
That was just sad and hard to see and hear.
All my regards to everyone out there stay safe and be well my friends!!
    Cheers!!

Thank you big time to the journalist and staff for shining light on this epidemic; I admire her determination, and sorry for the lost of her father, he is definitely proud of her...but most importantly thank you for exposing the wicked people that want to be in the shadows, the one that left church to do an illegal drug sale really made my stomach turn... the devil is everywhere... even in church

This is deeply disturbing and completely heartbreaking... all of this damage and human tragedy and it seems as if NOTHING changes. All of this is truly all down to greed...
