  • In Uganda, young women are leaving their homes to try and find jobs as domestic workers, but for some their new lives can lead to mistreatment and abuse.
A charity in Kenya is calling for the introduction of laws to protect domestic workers, who are commonly referred to as ‘housegirls’, to ensure their safety.
For BBC Africa Eye, reporter Nancy Kacungira has been investigating why young women living near Uganda’s border are leaving their villages to find work in Kenya.

Take heart sisters. I was a maid in Zimbabwe, treated like a donkey, when the madam boss realized I was smart she started getting worried about her husband noticing. I had to leave. On Monday I submitted my Bachelors thesis in another country. I am going to be a teacher and I got employed before finishing my studies. Keep the faith. One day it shall be well.

The pain of being alone and away from home combined with maltreatment, over work and luck of sleep broke my spirit. The egency that brought me to Hong Kong did nothing to help me. I work from home as a nurse so she’d just have to keep my 3 year old busy during the day & have food/snacks ready for the older kids when they get out of school, help with clothes and dishes when I get behind, but we have a washing machine and dishwasher so it’s easy. I’d pay for her education and we’d shop & get our nails done together on the weekends. She would eat dinner with the family, if we eat steak and lobster she is too.

Just because she's preparing the food doesn't mean they will allow her to eat it. That's especially cruel, imo, to have to prepare someone's meals but not be allowed even a bite. Its all about power. They have the power over the worker and it makes them feel better/more powerful. These people are obviously suffering inside themselves to be this cruel to innocent people just trying to make a living. Like that girl said at the end, "If I had money, wouldn't we be the same?" But generally people who have more think themselves better just because they have more. I guess it can be boiled down to that maybe they are scared that if they loose their money/power then they could end up the same way and no one wants to suffer just to live. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just thinking out loud, really.

C Me you are so right. Some people have no form of remorse. Someone’s child and if these girls had another choice they won’t be working like a slave in someone’s home. Growing up we had house helps but people can never tell if they were house helps or one of my mom’s kids. We were not allowed to call them maids in our house. To her, they are part of the family.

The girl works for them...and they need to realize that she is free and should be able to have down time to do whatever she wants with it. All these people just love to be the slave drivers. Let the people be free to serve in peace. Housework is an art that not everyone can do well and it should be compensated properly and treated as an important service. Exactly, why would the girl make it up and ruin her chance to work and make money. The girl seemed too innocent in her spirit to bear false witness. Plus, where did those deep scratches on her neck come from? The couple seem more concerned about their reputations than anything else. What was really surprising them was the fact that the young lady who was poor had a voice that people were listening to in addition to holding the couple accountable for their wrongdoing.
