Racism for Sale - BBC Africa Eye documentary

  • In February 2020, a shocking video began to circulate on Chinese social media. A group of African children are being instructed, by a voice off-camera, to chant phrases in Chinese. The kids repeat the words with smiles and enthusiasm - but they don’t understand that what they’re being told to say is “I am a black monster and my IQ is low.” The clip ignited outrage in China and beyond.
But no-one ever answered the crucial questions: Why was this filmed? Where was it shot? Who made it?
These questions send #BBCAfricaEye and #BBCEyeInvestigations reporters Runako Celina and Henry Mhango on a journey into a Chinese video-making industry that exploits vulnerable children across the continent.

Africa Eye brings you original, investigative journalism revealing secrets and rooting out injustice in the world’s most complex and exciting continent. Nothing stays hidden forever.

Slowly Africa is rising from its slumber and will surely be proud to raise her head up again and the only way we can do that is to build ourselves 1st and lets others come to us not us going to them just like the Chinese did. Painful to achieve because we rely so much on the west previously now its the east. If our forefathers know what we new generations know now about these foreigners i doubt they would have let them near African shores. Wow this actually hurt my heart and I’m only 8 minutes in. Seeing the excitement on the faces of those poor babies whilst knowing that whoever set this up is mocking them just broke my heart. They were excited to make some money for their family and to be sharing a video across the world and had no idea that some evil people in China were making them say disgusting things about themselves. I genuinely can’t get my head around why people are so awful and have such disregard for other people just because of their skin colour or country they were born. What really gets me is that as someone who is autistic, I am supposed to be the one who isn’t “neurotypical” and yet this upsets me and others think it’s okay. Which one of us has an abnormal brain??

This is a masterpiece of western countries or BBC, paying Chinese to make videos. Maybe some businessmen will make a blessing video. The BBC and the American media have been slandering China. For example, Xinjiang. Even provoke conflicts between Chinese men and women. For example, ask actors to perform Chinese men beating women on the street, and finally being rescued by white people. are all false。The Sino-Indian border line drawn by the United Kingdom, and the line between Egypt and Sudan drawn by the United Kingdom. The purpose is to provoke conflicts in other countries。In fact, Western media such as the BBC have been making rumors that China's investment in Africa is a colony. This time they made Africa hate China by framing it。

As a young African, my heart bleeds when I see this level of arrogance and exploitation done by FOREIGNERS right on OUR OWN LAND. It is sad that we allow these crooks to target the weakest of the weakest on our rich and lovely continent. Although some of these occurrences are fairly rare in my country (KENYA) I still can't get my sleep when our children in places like MALAWI, ZAMBIA, and CAMEROON are abused by RACIST CHINESE in the name of FOREIGN AID. I lead YOUNG AFRICANS in condemning these unprovoked acts of violence and aggression. You might be having your money (many of which you STOLE FROM US) but you must allow us to have our DIGNITY. Our children must be protected from such CRIMINALS at all costs. I am infuriated and THIS MUST END. Africa has survived for millennia without 'CHINESE AID' we can and we will make it as ONE AFRICA. At first, I thought these videos where you commission them for blessings was funny and sweet, especially for a birthday blessing for a friend or just something silly for 2d characters, and I’ve seen ads for these videos on my instagram and even sent those ads to my friends, telling them they should commission one of these videos for my birthday because I thought it would be funny. Never would I have thought that such dark things were happening off-camera and behind the scenes, and ashamed at myself for not noticing the underlying racism in such videos. (Because think about it, if it were white males taking the places of these african people in these videos spouting things they didn’t understand and danced around and sang, would we have thought that it was funny? )

Start with electing a good leader to get their people out of property and provide them with good education. The only way to get out of racism is to be successful in life.

I would strongly suggest adding Chinese subtitles to this video, this video needs to be spread amongst the Chinese speaking world. I'm not only talking about in China, being of Taiwanese descent I have seen these videos occassionally in my social media feeds (though not the explicitly racist ones). So if possible adding Traditional and Simplified Chinese subtitles would help spread the message.

As an African, I’m enraged especially because this is still happening till date. I heard a lot of people talk about how foreigners are mean to people they employ or share spaces with. While I commend the lady’s control of temper, I really plead that people speak up when things like this are noticed. Who will listen and act remains the question I can’t even answer. I’m confused and angry. I really need to put myself together before typing properly. I’m so upset.

It’s heartbreaking to see these videos still circulating on social media. The world en masse does not see dark skin people, especially those of African descent, as human. To go to someone else’s country and badmouth their culture while profiting off of disenfranchised locals, it’s a neocolonial pursuit.
