In the summer of 2005, federal agents and police in Rockford, Illinois, captured over a thousand hours of surveillance footage inside a crack house. The gang smokes marijuana, plays with guns, and sells crack and heroin for six weeks, completely unaware that their every move is being recorded.
Customers come and go, unaware that their private lives are being revealed. This is an intimate portrait of a crack house's rise and fall, as well as a drug-addled American urban culture. Interviews with gang members, their friends, and police disclose the unavoidable tragedy - and the occasional dark humour - of a reality that exists underneath the surface of any major community.

Montrell’s grandmother is an outstanding, strong women who is incredibly wise. You can tell she’s seen so much pain and devastation in her life and she still finds a way to stay positive.

As a former addict, I can relate to most of this video!! I thank God every single day I got out alive 11 years ago!! 🙏🏽🙌🏽👊🏽💪🏽 Only a person that has walked in the shoes of an addict or a dealer/trafficker, can really understand the power of the drugs and the money!! When it gets you in it's grip.. It's nearly impossible to break those chains ⛓️😔 But I'm here to tell you it can be done, and I'm living proof of that!! I'll be 59 on March 11th and my testimony would blow your mind!! Truly a miracle that I'm still here🙏🏽 My heart and prayers go out to every single person trapped in this very dark place, including the families, because they are affected more than most people even realize!!🙏🏽💔 God bless and NEVER GIVE UP HOPE..🙏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽👑💪🏽💪🏽

I feel bad for the girlfriend with the 2 children. She looks extremely depressed and lost. It looks hard in the US to be a single Mum in poverty a real struggle. I hope things work out for her and her children 🙏

her story really cut deep. it does seem as if they were born on the 'wrong side of the tracks'.. even if they tried to live straight they wouldn't make it because the situation there, is as you see it. such a painful documentary.
I sold drugs for like a day. It was boring and time consuming so I went up the recruiting office and joined the army. Best decision I ever made.
Working for the government is just as worse.

I work in a health care clinic inside of a low income hud high rise. The devastation, fear, and lack of opportunities and education for families is heart breaking. Gun fire is common. Kids with rotten teeth and already pre-diabetic, walking by bodies cause the EMS system is slow to respond. Great grandparents raising children. I asked one of the mid-level dealers why not take care of yourself and be more cautious. He said look around, how many guys over 30 do you see? I am already gonna die in the streets or be in prison. He was right. So many children caught up in this.

Moved away from Chicago 8 years ago. Brought myself and my fiance to Virginia he was charged at 13 with a very harsh lifelong charge and was picked on and bullied by the police there. The problem with the system is horrible and moving out saved us. I'm preying for all those who have been put in a system of poverty and homelessness and I like many others just want to be left alone in peace. A shack in the woods all alone sounds perfect for us and I bet many others who felt Trapped and punished by judgement because we lived in poor neighborhoods or ended up unable to affordable lawyers or someone who cares enough for others to help prove innocence. I dont understand why our government continues to take from its people without helping so many. We are not our government but we recieved punishment for our governments behaviors and face judgments when so many people here lost rights to vote, go to college and work. How do we have a say. How can we be herd, how do we protect ourselves from our government. Food stamps and health insurance are not a fair trade for our freedoms.

“God forbid someone gets hurt” shortly after a segment of a guy beating a pregnant woman and threatening to kill her.
This is exactly why i lived in places where we all lived in a studio apt but in a good school district. We had no money, less than $20/day for 3 kids and myself to live on. We walked everyplace. Sometimes we collected cans to eat, washed clothes in the bathtub, my kids started working at 14 and 16. For Christmas and birthdays my kids got clothes/books, not bikes, not toys (maybe small ones), no electronic equipment because I was paying rent in a better neighborhood. I was not going to raise my children in a poverty stricten school district with over stressed teachers. And my sons were not going to jail for selling drugs- of that I was determined! And now they are grown with jobs and families. It was rough. But they stayed out of jail, they are healthy, happy. Sometimes the difference is moving a couple of miles away or a little farther, sometimes it's giving up a lot of clothes, toys, fancy stuff. Which is more important.

@@maryhadley7373 I didn't make the post to sound better than, the video brought back memories of years of sacrifice on the part of my kids and myself. I just remember being determined that we would survive walking in rain, cold, carrying heavy bags of groceries (or even at times daily shopping), because we were absolutely not going to make that slide into the drug life. I don't want to go into details. We were one of the lucky ones. Not everyone can make the jump.

@@101st_AB please, no. I was an addict for 30 years as well. We had a huge conflict, no one knew I was an addict. I had been raped at 12, 14 so turned to drugs to cope. I became incredibly suicidal as I grew older, how could I teach my children morality yet be so dependant on speed etc to exist, to work? My son saved my life. He called the police on me. I love him, it took such strength and love for him to do that. I've now been clean for 27years. I'm not perfect. I always put things in anonymously as i don't want to bring heartache to anyone. No one can stand on this earth, except the Lord, and lay claim to a life of perfection. What I can say is I love my children and their children with every fiber of my being. We have gone through horrid trauma and I have made dumb mistakes. We are strong. We are a big family and I do appreciate your compassion. What I wrote about was simply a response to a video. I probably should not have done so if it have you the idea that I'm a "good" person. 💖 Much love.
How that grandmother has kept her loving and decent heart in this brutal inhuman world of ours is beyond me. She is an exemplary person, wide awake to life's tragedies & pain yet able to survive with her spirit intact. Bless her. May she have a long & happy life watching her grandbabies thrive & follow in her extraordinary footsteps.
She is actually the heart in this story, a beautiful example of unconditional love. Her actions showed how much she believed in family. She is definitely the woman that Jesus described in Proverbs. Her family is very blessed to have her!!

I was 18 and looking at 4-8 for delivery and manufacturing. I served just under 1 year. That year shaped the rest of my life. Im sober now for just over a year but i have managed to stay out of prison and out here for my wife and kids. I wouldn't judge anyone for their mistakes. I judge based on how people learn from them and grow to be a better human.

Brad's grandmother really devoted her life to the kids. What a wonderful and wise person. She did her best but sometimes no matter what the kids go the wrong way. God bless her and her family.

Montrell’s mother revealed something that’s rarely spoken of - addicted parents having their own children supply their drugs. What else isn’t widely known is that in a number of single mother homes, she knows her son is participating in crime (not necessarily drug-dealing), but she reaps benefits from it, so it’s not addressed. Whether it be money or goods, he’s contributing to the household, and that’s the priority. Mothers with this type of mentality expect their sons to provide for the family and how he does it is of little to no concern. I recently watched a parole hearing of a young man in his 20’s who was almost assured of being released from prison if he completed several courses the Parole Board designated. In order to take the classes, though, he’d have to give up his work release job. When his mother heard she wouldn’t be getting his paycheck anymore, she got upset and the poor guy looked so guilty, like he was letting her down. One of the Board members chastised her that this was about her son’s future, not about her. She then conceded that his release would be good -
because he could then help with his younger siblings. Not one word did she say about missing him for him, not one word of praise about how well he’d done to improve and rehabilitate himself.

I was raised by my Grandmother she was born in the year 1919 she died 2014 I miss her dearly I’m 50 years old now and I owe my entire existence and who I am to her, I’m blessed to have had her love in my life than to never had any love at all
I'm an educated woman...professional and living my best life...but this documentary hits home for me and is painfully familiar. That grandmother faced down poverty and did what she could. She couldn't give him better circumstances. He was influenced by his surroundings and the opportunity to sell a substance that was placed in our communities in order to tear our families down. It did that...and it was certainly no accident. I love my people and I hate what we've had to try to overcome.
No one forced anyone in your "community" to take drugs or sell drugs. It was all a choice.

My younger brother was murdered so that he couldn't testify for my oldest brother.. this was around 2006/2007.. My oldest brother was given 4 life sentences which he could've avoided if only he had spoken up...

He should've been here. I have sickle cell disease. If anything I needed him. If I hadn't come out of that 5 day coma he would be filled with guilt & regret.
Despite all of that I'm in school for medical billing & coding which I have 2 courses left on but I have degrees prior to what I'm studying now plus I work for doordash.
It sucks... I basically lost 2 brothers because I'll never see either one of them again.

“He only got 30 years left granny” is something a child should never have to say, I’ve had to deal with the same thing multiple times no kid or family member deserves this
Children don't comprehend the time involved in 30 years. Meanwhile, the most important change needed, in my view, is a massive upgrade of schools (structures, teachers, curriculum, discipline, expectations) in low-income areas. The problem is how to do that. Democrat states don't want to banish teachers' unions that are a bane on education. As more and more people in these liberal, low-income areas depend on government, the tax base for improved schooling dwindles. We need innovative leaders who don't kowtow to liberal victim excuses and who prioritize and follow through on programs to increase the economies and tax bases of these low-income areas.
the sad truth is letting these guys out is a risk to those around them: and quite possibly to innocent people who get caught in the crossfire. If I were a judge, I don't think I could ever trust them fully to not do violence. Selling drugs only doesn't bother me as much: both parties are willing ultimately (I want to legalize drugs actually to maybe end a lot of the violence). But if you did violence in part, then I got a problem there. Maybe if they were monitored strictly if released, then ok. But to assume they won't do it again may be a dangerous assumption.

Not to mention if you think about it selling drugs doesn't even make that much money, hear me out. Lets say in 1 year you make $300k (im not a drug dealer so I don't know how much they make), then you get caught, as drug dealers always do. Now you serve 10-40 years depending on what you did to get that money, so 300,000 ÷ 10 = $30,000/year on the lower end of your sentence and 300,000 ÷ 40 = $7500/year on the higher end sentence. The first option is LESS than a $15/hr job, the second is about 4$ less than minimum wage (minimum wage is $7.50). That is not even mentioning the fact that if the government suspects you of dealing drugs then they can freeze your account and seize your funds meaning you went to prison for 10 years for LITERALLY NOTHING. Crime does not pay. Now, when you get out of prison you cannot get a normal job and are 10+ years older with no friends or family, you have nothing left. Why even be alive if you're going to sell drugs?
You might say "Well, I wont get caught", but that's what everyone who gets caught says. You are no Pablo Escobar, and if you are selling drugs to make ends meet you probably are not very educated meaning the likelihood of you getting caught is EXTREMELY high. Don't play yourself.

"MOM, I know what your doing, if you go down I'm gonna go crashing down with you" That statement brought me to tears like thousands of others in this comment section for various reasons...I was raised by my grandparents because of a drug addicted mother. So I also know disfunction. My grandparents were so strict on me because of her but they didn't have to worry I never tried drugs a day of my life. Even to this day to include Marijuana. I have done so many positive things in my life that I cannot mention, but I have 3 degrees, served my country, traveled around the world AND most recently am a cancer survivor. My husband said I am like superwoman. Nope, not at all. I knew dysfunction growing up, and I was determined to leave it all in my rear view mirror by not continuing the mess. I raised my children with no dysfunction or craziness and was a damn good parent to my children which I am glad for...to you all who are still suffering from addiction those tentacles are long and far reaching please seek help. If not for yourself do it for your family which will ultimately help you too in the long run...🙏🏾

Hearing the perspective of the parents, especially the ones who were once drug addicts were powerful. You might be able to rebuild your own life, but you only have one opportunity to raise your kids... that’s something we don’t think about...

It creates an ongoing cycle of addicts. Breaking the chain when your whole family is addicts is a hard thing to do. You start way younger when everyone around you is doing it.
And too many people abdicate their responsibilities to the State. Schools and after school programs raise their kids and they assume those institutions have their child's best interest in mind.
Doesn't matter what neighborhood in what city or state, Schools do not raise your kids to be moral and productive adults. They shuffle your kids through K-12 in order to keep getting their government funding. There is no incentive for them to make sure your child actually grows intellectually and emotionally. They get paid regardless whether the kids can read and comprehend their lessons. As long as the kids can mimic back to them the answers, they're happy.
We need to take far more responsibility for our own children.

Unfortunately, you don't usually find them in poor and/or inner city schools. As you stated though, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents. However, many childen lack good parental guidance because their parents can't give them what they never received themselves.
Exactly. I had parents who were addicts and still struggle with resentment towards them. I believe my life was negatively impacted and made more difficult than it should have been because of their decisions. I vowed to stop that cycle right in its tracks!

I have a million thoughts running through my head and I am having a hard time choosing which to share. But first I will say that I am grateful to see so much love in the comment section. And one thing I will take from this documentary albeit it’s something I have been living myself, is that everyone starts out the same and most of us have families that love us no matter what. And probably just about every drug dealer, every drug addict, every criminal has family or friends that love them no matter what. The sad part is that a lot of us don’t realize that until it’s just too late. Whether someone goes to prison for a month or 40: years, they are going to need love and support so when they do get out, they can do better. And no matter how much hurt and damage they have done, they are going to be let out one day and we need to do everything we can to stop them from hurting anyone else and that means helping them to change while they have nothing but time to grow and heal and become better people.

They say it takes a village. I'm still wondering, when are We gonna build this village? We are failing our youth day in & day out. I'm a Counselor in a youth facility (jail). The fact that the youth have jails & not real life juvenile rehabilitation centers. They want & love that some in our community choices to fail our Babies. WE HAVE TO JOIN HANDS & SURROUND OUR YOUTH. Build a ring around them & make them our center! Our Babies need us now more than ever! There are SO MANY grown boys out here waiting & preying on younger boys. To walk out of their homes, schools, churches, etc. To brain wash them & lead them down a path of nothing. LETS BUILD THIS VILLAGE WE KEEP SPEAKING ON!

This is truly a tragedy. I was amazed by the woman who said that her boyfriend had “to do what he had to do to feed his kid” 🤬 How about the kids he killed with his poison, how about the lives he destroyed, including his own? These guys get philosophical in jail. Why can’t they make that transition while they are out on the street. These guys will cause generations of sorrow. There are segments of the black community that are devoid of men, GFs, fathers and sons have died early,(homicide), or languish in prison. What happens to their young sons? I’m not convinced that even he most dedicated mother can raise her son to manhood without his father.

99% if the drug users have chosen freely to try it out, some get hooked others not. Don’t blame the dealers, most of them are addicts too and they just supply what is requested by clients. I am ex addict, too. Never I would hv blamed a dealer.
