2024 Chevrolet Traverse Review | Is This Our Next SUV Of The Year? It's A Solid Contender For Sure..

- Chevy's new Traverse looks way, way, way less "minivany" than before and it packs the features to back it up. All models get a TON of standard active safety tech, boxier looks, 328 horsepower standard, and there's a Z71 model for more off-road capability. On the inside we get a better appointed cabin, more tech, and SuperCruise! But most importantly, all of that will happen for thousands of dollars less than the Grand Highlander, with a bigger cargo area and more family-focused features.

Why don't manufacturers offer 2nd row bench seats across all trims?? not everyone wants captains chairs on the upper trims and I don't want to get a lower trim just so I can have the bench.
It’s the same reason for using gloss black. It’s perceived by the manufacturers to be more upscale when in fact the luxury brands either never offered it or stopped using it. Sadly the Explorer is the only non luxury model that offers a bench in the highest trims.
@@bills6055I believe the Honda Pilot, and VW Atlas also offers a bench on all trims.
Atlas has bench option in top trim. It has plusses and minuses. For my family of five, we have the option of running all 3 children in the 2nd row if we need to fold the whole 3rd row down for transporting big items. The rub is that we HAVE to move one of the sides of the second row to access the 3rd row. Not a big deal, but less convenient for our smaller children who could easily fit between the captains chairs. It is also nice to have option to seat 7 instead of just 6 if the kids invite friends, or other family members could travel with us around town.
@Spikejou same with Grand Cherokee L though it cost more to get the bench
It's how companies make more money. It's no different in other brands like Nissan (of I want all the safety features, I got to buy higher trim levels. The Jeep GW allows you to choose bench in any trim, my only issue was I couldn't get the Dark Walnut trim inside the vehicle on the top trim level (only the blue agavy and light wood finish). Just ways of companies making more. Hyundai Palisade the same way, got to grt the lower trims for bench and same w KIA.
I think GM did a really good job here. The only thing I don't like is that "floating" C-pillar design.
Just take the C-pillar to the roof. The "floating roof" trend is stale and played out.
GM is putting turbo fours in everything! Man, I hope they're reliable.
The interior window in the way back is tiny due to this design.
Agreed!
@@th003gI prefer the smaller window
I never thought I'd say this...Chevy has been killing it lately. The Trax has got to be one of the best value vehicles available. The Colorado continues to be a solid contender in the midsize truck market and now the Traverse.
One thing I have to give GM to, now and in the past, is that I believe they genuinely had the best tech in terms of infointanment and now with the SuperCruise. Easy to use. My pick would still be the Grand Highlander Hybrid for its impressive fuel economy, but this stands at a close second.
@@naveenthemachineThere isn’t much sacrifice. Tests have proven that the hybrid is as fast or faster than the turbo model (Toyota) and it will be more reliable and simple to keep over years. I don’t care about the drone noise that comes with ECVTs as I already drive a car with a CVT. As for roominess, the Grand Highlander and Traverse are near neck and neck and are within a cubic feet of cargo space. I don’t typically use under floor storage, and Chevy included that in their cargo space figures, meaning the GH has more cargo room without the under floor storage. GM tech is good, as I said, but every GM vehicle always comes with their typical electronic issues.
Find another dude to change his mind on the car, because your logic doesn’t apply to buyers like myself.
Also learn how to spell Traverse lol
It seems like Chevy is going back to its roots lately-lower prices than other GM brands and the competition. Now all they have to do is sell those benefits without relying on some beautiful but non-specific marketing/advertising that doesn’t say WHY it’s the best.
Good looking SUV. $38k seems like a good deal compared to the competition.
It's a great starting point. -Travis
Does this engine have timing chain issues like Traverse's in the past????? Oh, is the timing chain in the back of the engine, against the firewall???????
@@iamgermaneit's a different engine and a transverse layout.
38K is for the LS which is very limited.
Got my Z71 this past Friday (6/14/24). So far, I love everthing about it, except the sound of the 4 cylinder engine. It's still quick, and has good torque, compared to my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Can't go wrong with this or the GH, I'd say they're both at the top of the segment.
I prefer the center mounted gear shifter on the GH compared to the traverse's column mounted shifter.
Also, the third row window on the traverse is small and makes the back row a bit claustrophobic.
@@naveenthemachine
Exactly! Plus if the Traverse isn't your cup of tea, you still have the Arcadia & Enclave as well.
I prefer the column shifter myself haha. It frees up space on the center console. My buddies F150 has the console shifter and I have the column. He’s prefers the column shifter on mine too. I can toss my phone, wallet, and earbuds case in the cubby where a shifter would be. Really convenient.
That's insane that Toyota wants $45k for its Grand Highlander. It looks like an Uber or Lyft taxicab. The Traverse atleast looks homely and handsome.
And it’s better quality inside and it’s just more interesting. Not boring and uncompetitive like Toyota and Lexus are
I test drove the Grand Highlander today and left feeling very uninspired. Specially for 50k plus
Thank you for adding length measurements on the vehicle size scale!
15:02 The low mode for the transmission is activated by a button on the steering wheel seems dumb. For one, why can't it be on the shifter? And I feel like people would press it by mistake since it's right next to the supercruise button. That could have been a heated steering wheel button.
It looks good, but the Z71 and RS are the standouts. The front end on the LT and LS looks a bit more pedestrian.
The Z71 and RS wouldn't pop as much if the lower trims were standouts too. -Travis
Oddly enough the LT and LS trims look the best to me the other trims look ugly as sin
I love the way these look! And great pricing! I'm researching for when I make a new car purchase. I'd been looking at Toyota 4Runners and Sequoias although I've never owned a Toyota. They are quite a bit more expensive even for the base models. Anywhere between $56+k for the 4Runner and $61+k on the Sequoia. I've had several Chevy vehicles and have always had good experiences. The new Traverse RS is exactly what I'm looking for in a new vehicle. Looking forward to seeing one in person. Thank you for such an informative showing of these cars!
Got that right, with Camry car of the year, Ranger Raptor performance truck of the year, Tacoma TRD Off-road Hybrid Premium truck of the year, Land Cruiser adventure SUV and GX550 luxury SUV of the year
I like How GM center screens are more intergrated with the dashboard rather than looking like a after thought.
Plug in Version is coming with 60 miles of EV range
Would love to see it but with no officiall announcement it's just speculation. -Travis
no word on that yet
It's too bad there's no other interior color or this would be at the top of my list. I just can't do black on black on black. Too dark. Other than that it looks great!
I agree.
I don't mind an all black interior, but I don't like the red trim inside.
Seat covers are your friend :)
@elliottmanning4116 yeah I'd prefer matching to exterior colors
Put in custom upholstery?
Thank you for opening maps on carplay. I've been wondering if they would fill a non rectangular screen
This is my number 1 pick in the segment at the moment. Absolutely love this refresh
Does this engine have timing chain issues like Traverse's in the past????? Oh, is the timing chain in the back of the engine, against the firewall???????
@iamgermane not a mechanic so I honestly have no idea. My mom bought new and owned a 2010 traverse for 12 years and it never gave her any issues, so I'm just going based off that.
Wow that's a big difference in front end looks for the different trim levels :o
For the price, I'd go with a mazda cx90 it has a 3.3 straight 6 turbo and has a premium interior.
I like how much space this offers, hopefully this makes some consumers switch from BoF to unibody.
For 95%+ of consumers there is no reason to get a Tahoe instead of this new Traverse.
edit: they should offer the 8 seat option for more trims, so much space but 7 seats only for many versions is dumb...
It's great to have options but folks getting higher trims tend to want nicer second row seats. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide So make the bench and option. They are losing $$$ for those of us who would want a z71 or RS with a bench.
We gotta end the mid-size and full-size nomenclature. It's either body on frame or not.
This thing is the size of a Tahoe for all intents and purposes, height being the only thing really separating them.
Definitely on the shortlist to replace our Subaru Ascent when the time comes. Better tech, better seat configuration and lumbar controls, more space, way better infotainment. Looks like a winner.
I usually wonder who asked Chevy to make all these cross-over SUVs except for the rental companies because none of my friends have interest in any of them or are looking forward to Chevy refreshing their SUV list or having more new models.
But the new Chevy Traverse really attracted our attention at the San Diego Auto show and was skeptical if Chevy would actualize it as it was. Sadly, we could not access the interior.
But for the first time ever, damn Chevy, that's a good cross-over SUV!
We just bought one.
Loved the new design of the Traverse, preferred the shark fin, over the Acadia. I don't know about the U.S., but here in Canada, these are hard to get.
I was a little nervous about it being a new engine, I guess time will tell. I prefer the size of it over the 23. I didn't want the bench seat, but NEEDED it, so I did the trade-off being ok with all the standard features, and AWD. I'm going to blackout all the chrome, bc I prefer the look of it
I like how you point out the exhaust tips, with two of them clearly being faux.
Small displacement turbo 4 with the fuel economy of a NA 6? I like the power figures but weren’t these things supposed to be more efficient?
They are cheaper to build and of course GM looking for ways to make more and spend less.
Looks good inside and outside,
Except for the displays setup makes the dashboard cluttered and unnecessary busy.
2024 Acura ZDX displays setup is good; large center/infotainment display, separate driver's display, tidy.
hey FYI you missed a shot of the cargo space with the 3rd and 2nd rows down. overall a much improved 3row crossover in a crowded segment. a redesign was a must. the z71 is more of a lux offroader that most people wont take off road very much but the smoother ride from the 18s is the best part. the tires are a good size(a segment first i believe at 31.5") and the engine now has more hp and torque than most v6s. interior is a vast improvement w tech to back it up. finally tahoe level? focusing on offroad trims here bc i prefer 2 row suvs and think the gx550 is the the new king offroad.... back to z71, i dont like the all black interior, an abysmal trend throughout the industry i would never pay money for, but some people apparently still like , the captains chairs in the rear, the sunroof, the 3rd row or the compact spare buried deep inside the back. perhaps offer a budget ls/lt w an offroad pkg or make a low range acadia at4x w all this fancy stuff optional and follow pilot ts lead, more skid plates?, a lighter interior at least in the top half, a full size spare outside, higher tow rating and towpkg/trailer brake/towhaul mode, side steps to make access to roof easier. this would give the grand c and pilot ts some serious competition but for now the only advantage z71 has is size and power over those older v6 engines. while gm has serious off road trucks in every size, they just cant(or wont) compete w toyota/wrangler/bronco in the offroad suv segment even though they sell more large body on frame suvs than anyone.
Really wish it had heads up display though but they are keeping that with the Acadia and I also dont love the 2.5 turbo.
Great job Alex! A compelling package. Crossing my fingers that durability for that tiny 2.5L will be at least average.
Just get a factory GM Platinum warranty for 7 years 120,000 miles

That red plastic trim looks like something you'd see on a basketball shoe.
I wonder what the sneakerheads think of that comparison. -Travis
@AAutoBuyersGuide As a sneakerhead I can confirm that he has no idea what he's talking about. His use of the term "basketball shoe" is so general and generic it could literally mean anything.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide you should have kept an auto AWD You probably would have got a faster 0 to 60
Cant wait to see the Acadia on the same platform. I can only assume it will come shortly after the Traverse so as to not steal its shine.
We'll be driving it soon and will share our thoughts as soon as we can. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Is there a media day set up for the Acadia yet (and if so, when)? I have both a Traverse and an Acadia Denali ordered and am looking forward to the Acadia reviews too as they seem to have also started shipping this week. Leaning toward Acadia for a lot of the reasons you pointed out (lighter interior availability and the availability of memory seats without the red interior accents being the most significant). Great review - thank you!
@@kevinciabattoni3162They probably aren't allowed to comment on if there is an event planned or not.
@@sipher3516it’s already planned for sometime in June. I think they’ll also have a sneak peek of the refreshed Yukon and new Terrain.
Would love this in a phev and ambient lighting
I don’t love Chevy, but they seem to be the only ones charging reasonable prices these days. Plus this Traverse seems like a decent suv compared to the competition.
Rather have a natural aspirated V6.
I think the Nissan Pathfinder still offers one.
Yes it do and it's a nice SUV
I have a 22 Pathfinder and really like it, but it's smaller than almost every other SUV in the mid size 3 row segment.
It's perfect for a family of 4, but IMO it's a poor choice for a family of 5 or larger.
The latest GM small turbos have been surprisingly reliable (arguably, more reliable than their new V8s). I have seen plenty of 1.3, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.7 approaching and over 100k. I suspect the 2.5 would share the same reliability. I personally own a 1.3 with 52k miles and have not had a single issue. These new turbos are nothing like the previous 1.4 EcoTec days of the past- those were TERRIBLE.
Bro said a Nissan 😂 for the engine … lol
Nissan VQ engines are bullet proof. The weak point of nissans are the jatco CVT. Since the pathfinder don't have a cvt and runs a NA V6 yes it's a nice SUV that should run strong for many years if taken care of.
4:00 The taillights remind me of the Toyota Sienna Minivan. That's the only thing that spoils the look for me in the back. Maybe some square dimension taillights would've worked better.
Turbo from GM, I will wait 3 years to see the reliability or they have to add an electric motor to reduce the over work of turbo.
What “over work” of the turbo? Why Do y’all insist on making things up out of thin air whenever it comes to this company?
@@G-Ratedyeah these people are basing their silly comments on their thoughts and feelings rather than any kind of logic. Annoying to keep reading the same old boomer ignorance.
Nice review I love this vehicle ❤ great job gm
Does AWD mode persist between restarts or does it default back to FWD every time?
It defaults to FWD. -Travis
Just add some aftermarket sound dampening under the hood. That should reduces a lot of the engines gruff.
How many times do we have to say. No one puts a tablet computer in a glove box.
The aggressive redesign and SuperCruise makes this a no-brainer compared to the competition. The downside is there isn’t a High Country trim. I really don’t want red plastic on my doors.
Well give it 5 years and then compare it to the GH. I really dont care about the shiny plastics and all the junk it has to take your concentration off the road. Give me reliability, low cost to own and longevity
@@naveenthemachine that's why I said give it 5 years
@@naveenthemachine
Looks like Toyota's sterling reputation for reliability is taking a hit, as the GH is already experiencing mechanical issues.
@@naveenthemachinethis is coming from the guy who criticizes Toyota and Lexus for no personal reason yet owns a Camry V6. How did Toyota hurt you?
Id rather have something that is fun to drive
@@TheBjjoneswhat issues exactly?
Z71 is the only one worth getting over a minivan for supposed off-road ability. But only 7 3/4" clearance, temporary spare, and only seats 7. Disappointing.
Isn’t it 8 inches? 1/4 inch isn’t much of difference but the website says 8 on the Z71. Agree though. Was hoping for a little more clearance on the Z71.
I think this looks amazing, the interior looks fantastic but I would probably still pick a GH hybrid or hybrid max, with the regular hybrid, sure it is slower but it gets much better mpg, almost 40 mpg in a vehicle that big is kinda crazy. The hybrid max proved more power and torque with better mpg. I think Chevy definitely needs to introduce a hybrid option cos right now, Toyota has that whole market share to themselves and it shows cos GH are flying off dealer lots
Upfront cost is still a big consideration for shoppers but of course the hybrid fuel economy will pay off down the road. -Travis
The cost to get the hybrid GH will be significantly higher than a traverse. It would take years to break even and more considering the markups on the Toyota
23:40 is Super Cruise not available in the Honda and Acura based Ultium EVs? I think they are.
It's available on the ZDX Type S. -Travis
24:26 Super Cruise was inches away from a head on collision 😮. No way Id trust that technology this early
It is May and they are still driving pre-production vehicles. When are they just going to admit that they should call it the 2025 Chevy Traverse.
Personally, I would wait until they come out with the 2025. How many issues have they just said "that has to wait until 2025 to be fixed"?
I'd also compare this to Toyota Sienna. Both 204 inches long and AWD available. Chevy priced thousands lower (especially in real world) but the cost of depreciation is less clear.
Why anyone wants 22 inch rims on these vehicles is wild. I would buy the rs with z71 suspension and rims All day
If GM would make a plug in hybrid of this I would trade im my Volvo today!
But they don't, so I won't.
Good looking suv.
Anytime Alex jumps into the 2nd or 3rd row, his shirt untucks itself
I can imagine mall crawlers getting an ECU tune and get this up to 400+ HP and rapid kid hauler is all yours.
Soccer moms rejoice, the all new Hyundai Santa Fe is available for $3,000 less than this lowrider on grass. However as the Car Confections channel recently found out the dual clutch transmission is half baked Opt for the hybrid model for an alternative transmission.
That's exactly what I told them.
I wish it had a two-speed transfer case.
Never with the small 4-cylinder turbo, turbo says the engine is way too small. We have a 2017 GMC Acadia with a 3.6 V6 and get as much as 34MPG on the highway.
You totally ignored the terrible design of the third row side windows!
Never mind the aesthetics, but it hinders outward visibility (crucial in 3rd row car sickness).
This would be a good reason to opt for the GMC or the competition
I've got a friend who's traverse has been in the shop for 6 weeks. The cheapest parts. Any mechanic will tell you. Another friend's wife purchased one. Transmission is the problem. The fly by wire 4WD. Chevy looks the part. No question about that. They need to outsource the Transmission. Upgrade the electronics. But then, it will drive up price. Then won't be the bargain. Who wins? Well....they do.
What years are those cars?
That is a nice-looking SUV. Hopefully, it is reliable.
Hopefully 😂😂😂 it’s a GM, don’t get your hopes up
@@jtomtlactually the only issues the Traverse had were due to it’s 3.6L V6 which is now gone. I don’t think the fear mongering tactics people are trying to use to steer folks away from this and its platform mates will work this time around. These vehicles share too little with the outgoing models.

Thanks Alex for showing the LS and LT variants, which I think have the better looking front ends than the RS and Z71 trims.

Why would someone spend $30K+MORE for a similarly speced out Tahoe RS? Just for the towing?
I' sure this is a fine vehicle, but it is fighting an uphill battle against the Grand Highlander
Not only is it the best retail seller in the class, but it has the best fuel economy in the class, by a margin, and it will be about 1 second faster than any four-banging Traverse, doing 0-60 in around 6.5 seconds, so you'll notice the hybrid power over a turbo-four. With that in mind, if I'm paying $50k and up, the Toyota is worth the premium. If you need a budget buy, this is more appropriate

@@AAutoBuyersGuideyou speak truth. I personally do not value newness in and of itself. I am glad there are people willing to pay new prices, even if I think it is a bad choice for most. Keeps the used car prices low for me. Keep selling people on these new cars!
This is the same size as what a Tahoe used to be in 2004.
Ok. I constantly drive with 4 other people in the car. I see the torque numbers but how does the motor/trans do when loaded up with luggange and people? Also inknow it has boise canceling. How quiet is it?
The one thing I cannot figure out is what the point of these small turbo engines is???? The difference in MPG between this and a V6 or even V8 is minimal in many cases......
Minimal is still an improvement and unless vehicles are going hybrid there isn't some wild, untapped mechanical innovation that will make ICE powertrains significantly more efficient. -Travis
I believe a 4 cylinder is cheaper to make. It won’t last as long, so consumers will have to buy a new car more frequently. More money for car manufacturers. They blame the EPA as cover, even though the gas consumption and emissions are the same.
Thanks for the reply. I agree. I, for one, would trade minimal gains in efficiency for reliability long-term. I would also make tablets in vehicles illegal, lol. These things are a grenade waiting to explode(as is the motor, most likely). We have a 2018 Mazda 6 with a four banger that's NA. Love everything about it, including the efficiency of the motor. The only problem is that the infotainment, which is comparatively simple, is crashing and having issues. The fix is going to be thousands. I'd trade that for a few knobs and buttons that won't fail and if they do are easily fixed. Hertz is dumping all of their EV's because of the costs to fix them and the insane depreciation. EV's are such a tremendous bait and switch, not to mention they don't solve any of the purported problems they have been developed for. At the end of the day though, EV's are about one thing: Control of movement of the population. Anyway, thanks and looking forward to more interesting videos.
@@PolishGator Also, a naturally aspirated V6 making this kind of power and torque all on its own would experience way more stress than this 2.5T 4 cylinder. The 3.6L that produced 310 hp/266 lb.ft.tq. was nearly anemic. In other words this engine is built to withstand more pressure and it will be more reliable in the long run since it doesn’t have to work nearly as hard all of the time. It’s able to make more power and be more reliable which were the only complaints of the outgoing V6.
Isn't every maker moving that direction? New generation Four Runner next year loses the V6. Sign of our times. As long as it's reliable then should be good. First generation timing chain issue plagued my first Traverse, unfortunately. Granted it was after 12 years and 150k miles but still.
What's the name of the GMC version, the Acadia?
Yes :)
I'm not quite sold on these yet...I think it looks great! The value is there as well. I just have concerns about reliability. How different(if at all) is this trans from the previous one paired with the 3.6? Time will tell on how they hold up I guess
When you look at the cost difference vs a GH the savings of the traverse are unlikely to be consumed by issues
Until they offer a hybrid model, Grand Highlander still wins I think. Most people would pay a little more for hybrid, Toyota reliability, and extra legroom in third row

Give it 4 turbochargers and it'll be perfect 😂
4 x 4 x 4
And a 48-speed transmission
38k????? GREAT PRICE
Alex, I think we better wait for the 35 mpg Hybrid version of the Traverse before 'we' start handing out SUV of the Year awards. 🤨
Or…. Just wait until it comes off warranty and the gremlins crop up. GM, Ford and Stallantis are all leasers and not buy for the long hall!
@rightlanehog3151
It's not an issue considering that Grand Highlander owners are also waiting for 35 mpg from their hybrids. 😄
@TheBjjones agreed my neighbor has a Grand Highlanded in Limited and it never averages that low😂 usually knocking on 40 MPG.
If you were talking about *fuel economy awards* then yes I’d agree with you, however fuel economy is not the determining factor for which SUV offers the best value in the segment.
Y’all will find any reason to hold the underwhelming Japanese competition on a pedestal. Unfortunately without their hybrid fuel economy, there’s no reason to hold out on anything any longer - this new Chevy Traverse blows them all out of the water.
If a hybrid comes it won't start under $40k. -Travis
Overall, a nice looking vehicle but I cannot stand those taillights. They look hideous!
Curious why you didn’t compare with Rivian R1S? 90MPGe makes it a compelling buy when you factor the purchase price difference, especially for dual motor. Granted it doesn’t have captains chairs (yet)
Alex, is the 2.5 turbo both port and direct injection or just direct only?
Direct only if I recall correctly. This isn’t necessary an issue as not all direct injection engines have issues with carbon build up. It depends on design, the oils used, etc
Why no hybrid? Hard sell over a Toyoya that gets way better milage and more reliable.
