She is right in saying that everyone should be a warrior, fighting their own fears. Anxiety is a feeling that few can get rid of because it's quite impossible to have control of your thoughts, negative thoughts. She is giving some advice because she overcame it. I don't see arrogance or self confidence, it is just an attempt to help others.

If I were in her shoes and asked to do a Ted Talks lesson, I think my thought process would look more like:
    1. Wow, this is amazing!
    2. Are they sure they want me? Is this a joke?
    3. I can't do this.. There must be someone better for this..
    4. I choke up in public speaking. I literally, physically can't do this..
    5. That's it. I'm cancelling .. cancelling this once in a lifetime opportunity that I *know* I'll regret but I can't get over my temporary fears for the lasting satisfaction of acting on this opportunity...

I haven't found one talk yet that I can relate to fully regarding anxiety, and that told me something I could actually use to get over it. For example, my anxiety doesn't disappear at work because I'm confident there. Where there are people, I'm anxious about interacting with them, when I need to present it's even worse, when I'm alone at home I worry about future problems and things I didn't do properly, and I miss having intimate social connections that I know I can't have anyway because I'm not capable of conversations the same way other people are, and I just don't feel comfortable enough around people to make friends. So yeah, it's easy to say you need to break the loop, but how do you do that when you actually believe there's something wrong with you and others are aware of it? I can't seem to get my mind off of: this person probably thinks I behave strangely, this person probably thinks I'm weird, I'm probably saying something strange now, I will probably not know what to say, O dear I don't know what to say and now the situation get's really awkward. It really drives me insane. Sometimes I wish I could shut off my feelings so at least I wouldn't have to feel broken and lacking all the time.
    There you have it.

I think it is the lack or not being true to yourself mate..that is how I treat my angst. Use it as an indicator that you are not quite where you are. Also, tell at least one close friend you are suffering. Opening up works..like a catharsis.

I watched this video on New Year's Eve when my anxiety had really got the best of me. I got my journalling book and started making notes. I really appreciate her honesty although I have to say I am shocked that she suffers with anxiety. She looks so bubbly and confident. Her ending statement, be a warrior not a worrier was so inspiring.
I also agree with what she said about her husband being happy because he did so many things. I think its so important to pursue interests: go places, meet people, try new things, volunteer. It's only when we are uncomfortable that we can be truly be comfortable.

From studying the topic of fear and anxiety, she is absolutely correct to all you nay sayers. You have to tackle you fears, in whatever category they are in, to be at peace and to be happier. How you overcome your fears when you tackle them, is something that you will figure out if you put in a serious effort. This isn't a math equation people. If your looking for some kind of voodoo trick to overcoming anxiety and fear, your not going to find it.

anxiety is caused by fear - mainly irrational based on some traumatic experience from years past - which is being repeated by an amygdala that is firing - as it has 'paired and conditioned' with trigger settings. Much as this women is good looking, and is probably annoying with the Life I Want stories, facing fear is the way to reduce anxiety. Its graduated exposure - will re-set the mechanism: the amygdala.

I don't agree. I have swallow anxiety for a few months now and face the fear at least 3 times a day. This on itself does not create progression, it's more in the approach rather than 'just doing' is my experience even though I am far from 'anxiety-free'.

    • @gingerindian1141
      @gingerindian1141 Před 6 lety +4

Anxiety is a fear response of the amygdala. The only way to change it is my confronting the fear in a graded way, and then - over time, the neurons that originally fired stop, and the new ones do fire without causing amygdala response. You can read the current research on neuro-plasticity and amygdala responses. Cognition, and new behaviour is the solution.

Lately I was suggested by someone to call a bunch of random company like phone company and ask questions. You can say this is my fear project. Even commenting on youtube videos is part of the fear project for me.
Fear will always be there unless you do something about it. The more you face it, the less fear you will have. Sitting there feeling sorry for yourself or replaying the fear in your mind wont help at all! you must face your fear, and you must create fear projects and eventually the more you do it, the more numbers you call, your fear will be gone.

Riding the wave means accepting who you are in that moment, therefore loving who you are, and seperating what you're currently doing (behavior) from what your true identity is (warrior).

The thing is, a person with anxiety can be very different to another person who also suffers anxiety. You are who you are based entirely on what you experience in life, every single second of every single day, you are always changing very gradually as a result. That’s why no two people are the exact same. Then there are all of the many, many other things that go on in your brain that create what you are. You can listen to others but ultimately you know yourself better than anyone and you will do whatever you think is best for you even if it isn’t, unbeknownst to you, the best thing to do.

I feel like most of the hate comments come from people struggling deeply with anxiety. It can be frustrating when someone calls being busy and having a stressful life an anxiety disorder. She doesn't relate much to real anxiety with panic attacks, and where it's so bad getting out of bed, and going to work is an accomplishment. Maybe she deals with this type of anxiety as well but she didn't get down to that level. However, her message was inspiring I just wish I could relate.

I agree. I started to reply to some comments to suggest a similar point of view but I felt that would also only be met with criticism. Everybody is at a different point in their journey. I like this quote: “I am a workhorse. So I am going to enjoy the benefits of this life. It’s human nature. Some people will see it & take positivity from that, they will look at that and take inspiration and it will go and inspire them to push for that. Others will shell up and critique and be negative towards it, but one thing that’s for sure, those people will stay where they are. The people who take inspiration from it will rise up and one day experience that life.”

Anxiety is a very complex condition and it impacts people in different ways. Not everyone is going to be helped by this video, but I do agree that if you have disabling fear/anxiety you should go see a mental health professional and possibly explore medications. The part of her talk that is very accurate is that without confronting your fears it has a way of ruining your life, costing you opportunities, happiness, and a sense of peace. If you cannot figure it out on your own, go seek professional help. At the end of the day, you deserve to be happy, authentic, and centered.

It is sad that the fears and anxieties that most TED speakers talk about are common and normal fears. And there is a tendency for them to IGNORE talking or even just mentioning anxieties and fears that are clinically diagnosed. So, without really intending to, they appear to be trivializing such anxiety disorders or making such disorders look like they don't exist. I am not suggesting that clinically diagnosed fears and anxieties can be overcome after hearing one or a few talks.
What I am suggesting is that they get people who were clinically diagnosed and who got well, talk about how they did it and what methods worked best. There are tons of people out there in the world who are in desperate need of such assistance, INSPIRATION, and some uplifting. I am not also trivializing normal or common fears. But neither should TED talk organizers ignore the great need of clinically diagnosed victims of anxiety and fears who hardly have people who support them, for they are hard to cope with. These are the victims who usually have to face rejection by their loved ones and loneliness. They need help the most.
    God bless us all.

Wow Angela you were beyond fantastic! As a fellow Aussie & an extremely anxious person by nature, I couldn't be more proud & patriotic to see you up there! (No more of that tall poppy stuff!) If this warrior moment doesn't deserve a new Hermes, Chanel or an LV, I don't know what does! 😉

Great job, Ange. You were so very poised and eloquent. One would never know you have a fear of public speaking. Your message resonated with me, as I too deal with anxiety and depression. Taking your worries and fears and using them to propel you into new arenas and ventures is a compelling idea. You are such an inspiration. The world is truly your oyster. xo

it's all well and good if you have some confidence and part of your life is good but other people are completely crushed with barely an I've of strength left. I guess they have to start small but it's so hard! Good talk but all the same not for the really badly affected people...Not to mention if you have depression as well...

I have GAD, part nature, part nurture in my case. It's a constant struggle. Like the presenter says, it's a bouncing around between excitement and worry. I'm working on learning on how to manage it. It's nice to hear these type of lectures and see how they cope and manage it.

Im an anxiety sufferer too. I believe her point was mainly about countering the negative thoughts/expectations which actually helps in certain degrees but what really helps is faking happiness whether you are alone or not.
Conquer your fears and you will be happier, it will not work right away but its a slow process, it will work eventually and even if you relapse get up and keep walking as if nothing happened.
Prayers to all of you who suffers from any mental illness, just know you are not alone suffering from this. Here i am same as you all, diagnosed with Generalised anxiety disorder. It will not stay there forever thats for sure 🙏

Real anxiety will make you disable totally , you can't even stay 10 second steadily it won't let you , your thought will comes and goes in split second ,your decision changes every minutes you can't remain in one place for a bit , how would you fight when you have nothing at all ? What you got is just anxiety monstrous anxiety and its mighty bigger than yourself , i always find myself in this storm , nothing works .
