- What are the symptoms of #BMW battery going bad? Learn how to spot low voltage in your car before is too late and you can still drive the car. The are some indications that will point to a bad battery, faulty alternator or electrical drain. Those should bring your attention, so you can service your car in order to make sure it will start every time.
BMW cars are monitoring #battery and can detect drains and voltage drops. Based on that car will take some actions by limiting its functionality, so next time you want to start the engine you will not find your car with battery completely drained.
Look out for symptoms like:

I'm currently battling a bad IBS and battery on an 2017 F15 X5 with 60k mi. The car died, was towed to dealership they found little to none, died again, boosted several times, died again. After an CEL came I scanned it and it gave me a code for a bad IBS. The car battery won't charge on a DEFA charger (the bad IBS fully depleted the battery 4 times or more). Will be replacing the battery and IBS in one motion, the register it, reset the DME and clear the codes. If this doesn't cut it then I have no idea what to do next...

I have a new battery on the car (e81) but from time to time it appears the battery sign in the computer bord. I would like to add that my ABS sensor has been broken for a while. Would that influence my car battery? Or why does that battery sign keep apearing?

I have one more question mate, my car has had a rempa done after a dpf removal and it also has a start stop, I am about to replace the battery but Im not sure if I should go for agm battery or a normal one. What do you recommend? I have a 320d e92 its 2008

Great video mate, when I turn on my day time running lights they all seem to flicker. When I have my lights in “ON” position once I unlock the lights sometimes turn on and sometimes don’t, would you say this is due to a battery going bad? the lights flickering is everywhere basically, even in the lights by the pedals.

mine says high discharge warning, its an 2008 BMW X5 , clock reset, no welcome lights, no coming home lights. is it the battery or the IBS ?
This happens when u have a bad bulb or u leave lights on when car is off.

can you help me with this ? car is 2006 bmw e87,120d engine. my battery was low woltage so i replaced it.car did not start after this,just cranking. guy with diagnostic came, work something and car is starting now....my question is : when i by this car,little blue jack on battery was disconested. when this guy fixed my problem,i ask him to connect blue jack and he said no. is it ok ? can i conect this jack myself? car starts now,i dont wont to make it just cranking as before ? ..and i allso noticed that my woltage drops 0,1v every day that car is not driving ? so,can i connect blue jack from ibs ? will it be better,worst,or same with this jack connected again ?
you should have the ibs connected, its not a necessary component to have the car run but without ibs your battery will not last as long, you may also have battery drain issues without it especially on higher spec cars with idrive. if the car doesnt start when you reconnect ibs then you should replace it for sure
Czesc and firstly thanks for all your informative videos! I have an E81 (2008) and my instrument cluster sometimes resets (time gone and even car service comes on but goes away after restart, INPA sees the 30Amp disconnect error) usually after long drives. I also get low battery warnings after leaving cluster on but engine off after some minutes. I replaced the battery (batt voltage was around 11.9-12V) thinking it was dieing and installed a new 70Amp Varta AGM (same type, I have no start stop) and recoded it. However after some days I had the same problem (after long drives clock would reset and 30Amp relay would disconnect and log the error). So I decided to monitor the battery voltage with an arduino voltage logger I wrote saving the voltage every 10 seconds to a txt file on an SD card. This is hooked up directly to the battery in the trunk. Apparently everything seems ok, voltage is around 14.8V during drive, drops slowly to 12.5 overnight. I see sometimes a raise in voltage after about 30 minutes the car has been closed indicating some load shutting off which is normal. I notice the voltage during idle is also around 14.8-15V which is a bit high, but then drops to 14.6 after some minutes in 2 "steps" (probably the IBS detects battery has charged and drops the voltage/current). I don't know what the issue could be as everything seems OK. I haven't been able to get a log when this error occurs yet. Have you seen this occur to you or have any idea what this transient fault could be? Could it be a faulty IBS? Thanks for any insight!
Hi! It could be:
1. faulty IBS (i believe that there even was a replacement program for it)
2. something draining the battery and IBS detecting it and taking action by disconnecting power. Voltage doesn't have to be low for the IBS to take action. All it takes is an unusual power consumption when the engine is off (like a hardwired dash cam).
3. some module not going into standby mode properly and the IBS is executing power reset procedure for the car.
4.if diesel and if in winter: glow plugs start to work as soon as you open the car, so when you put the key into the ignition your engine is ready to crank. If you have short circuit on one of the glow plugs or its controller, it could bring the voltage down significant amount each time you open the car and cause power reset.
@@mrfixpl Mine is a 116i petrol N43 engine. I will do some more investigation and try to log on longer drives to see what happens when it resets, if there is an anomalous drop in voltage. I know by default the IBS is set to cut loads of current drain in stand by exceeding 160mA and this can be changed in a setting multiplier in a register. 160mA is more than enough in standby so something is either draining (not shutting down) or the IBS is acting up (but why only on longer drives?). Will keep you posted! Thanks again!

Sie ma.. so i got lift vehicle yellow warning light on, clock reset, fan blower does blow only on first 3 speeds, rear window defroster doesnt work.. i ve installed android head unit that did not keep settings until i connected yellow wire to unused fuse that has constant 12Volts..after the week these symptoms showed up. Battery is 5,5 yrs old and last year i just doing 7km trip to work and back. Now I am not sure if the battery is suffering by short trips or its drained by new headunit. 🤷🤷🤷
If I had to guess I would say that it's the headunit draining the battery.
Hello, my battery is low now, and suddenly when i started the engine, my idrive suddenly blinking and turned off (deep black/no power), Air Conditioner not working (only fan), and windows passenger doesnt work. Are these symptoms that i had to change the battery? Or because the idrive module, windows etc broken? Could u give some idea please? And now when i always ACC ignition On, idrive always off.
Are these limitations from bmw because battery low?

Yes your battery is too low and you need to find out if you have a parasitic draw on the battery. Maybe charge it and see if it fixes it. The IBS sensor is another cause of electrical problems
very helpfull I have 330d e90 battery warning light keeps cumming on radio comes on and of jue to that and hard to start in mornings but if plug another car with jump leads fires up ther no hard crank thinking of buying new battery i did think glow plugs turned out it was battery amp very low and with bmw they need that extra to start fingers crossed it will be that any suggestions 😀 👍🏻

Zapalone auto, ale nie w czasie jazdy. Na lewej manetce jest przycisk BC oraz "joystick" góra/dół. Przechodząc góra/dół znajdź symbol kluczyka z odhaczeniem, potwierdź przyciskiem BC. Tam są różne ustawienia świateł.

Witam, wstawiłem nowy akumulator został zakodowany przez mechanika i znów się pojawiają te błędy, alternator działa poprawnie jednak samochód jest używany tylko w mieście zadko robi wiele kilometrów jakieś rady ?

@@mrfixpl When the doors are opened, the hall lights are on in the car, then it ends and the bidet button lights are not on.
This was very very useful. Another clue is, indoor lights. When you open the door or turn off your engine - your incar lights won't turn on.

If that option don’t work just tighten your terminals and jump start your car after , let it run or drive some where for about 20 mins should be good
Sure, but inly if the issue is low charge. If the battery State of Heath is low you will eventually have to replace it.

@@mrfixpl just quick wondering man I have charged my old battery to 14v okey and install it on the car but the voltage drop to 11,v and clock reset symbol but why? beacuse it have was charged over 24hours I think the bttery? Do you think battery is dead??
@@Data4664 check how low it will drop while starting the engine. Should stay higher than 9.5V-10V

My battery is low ,need to change..but today i make two long rides about 2 hours , my welcome lights back..Tomarrow i m going to change belt.
In winter, when you are making only short trips and use a lot of power (starter motor, glow plugs, electrical power steering, heated seats, defrost, fans...) you can find yourself in a situation where you use more that the alternator can produce.
You can try to limit your power consumption, or make a longer trip once a while, or connect your cars battery to charger overnight.
