- Here, I show how to change the strings on saz/baglama. That can be a little nonintuitive. The tuning pegs can also be somewhat annoying at times, so I show how either carbon from a pencil or stearin from a candle can be used for them to work smoother. There are also dedicated products for this, if you prefer. You can search for violin and tuning pegs to see what others use.

Thanks for posting this at my request and also showing how to fix tuning pegs! This will be helpfull to so many beginners
Hope it is helpfull
Great video. Thank you.
Tusen tack! This helped me with putting in a new string on Saz a friend gave me. Very helpful and worked very well.
Great to hear. It can be somewhat tricky the first time.
@@KlausM It went surprisingly well thanks to this video (and also thanks to me having restrung plenty of guitars and banjos in my days, this was way easier than most of them).
This was excellent information, I had this problem and you solved it
Grazie mille. Veramente molto istruttivo e spiegato molto semplicemente
Candle wax works GREAT!...Thank you for your video. I cannot help but wonder if a wood oil would do this and preserve raw, drilled-out wood
best. Thank you!
Thank youuu i needed this!
Thanks
The baglama saz is new to me. When considering purchase I thought about why the original ways of pegs persisted (tho, I luv that of the instrument design). There must be a reliable way to attend the inherent problem or the design would not persist thru time.
I think that it persists due to the character/tradition of the instrument (as on the violin). You can buy with guitar fine tuners, but these saz are rare (and mainly on electro baglama). I have installed violin fine tuners on one of mine (used in the video), but you need to drill into the body of the instrument to do this.
Vielen Dank!!!!
I was shown that if it is too loose to tune, put it in your mouth to moisten it and it stays. Thanks for the other tips!
OK. Never tried that.
Thats right, the moisture will make the wood expand, making it fit tighter into the neck
Thaaaaaaank you for the pencil and candle trick! My tuning-"things" turn really fast, sometimes only when you touch them. And my Saz is never tuned when i get her out of her bag to play somewhere else :D maybe the candle will fix it
You are welcome:)
Geared tuners and ball end strings will work.
Is there anywhere you'd recommend to buy fret nylon?! I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells anything I can use on my saz and I've lost a fret!
I do not know if there is some dedicated nylon. I have only done this once and here I just bought different thicknesses of fishing line to experiment with.

another peg remedy: if it sticks, use a bit of soap. if it slips, use a bit of chalk. also, there is a thing string players use. "peg dope." does double duty. available at your local supplier......🎻
Bee’s wax will do the trick as well.
I'm having an issue with my tuning peg, when it tightens it simply unwinds (it can't tighten), I don't know if this is an issue with the Saz itself or I'm making a big mistake.
Hi KingZ. It is hopefully not an issue with the saz. It is hard for me to tell what the problem can be, but one thing to be careful with, is to ensure that there is some millimeter distance between the string (on the peg) and the body (with the hole). Otherwise you will press the wound string towards the body, which will hinder the peg in going properly into the hole. If this is not the problem, then you will have to wax the peg, either with 'peg dope' or candle wax (not too much):

You can search on violin pegs, because the principle is the same. I think that a very last resort is to gently sand the peg to make it a little more rough, but I never had to do this. Good luck.
@@KlausM thanks for the fast response ^^
I think waxing the peg will be a good idea, I'll try that :)
very helpful, teskuru, dankeish, thanks a lot , I'm polish But love the turkish culture tooo much if i could say
My lowest string keeps breaking when i try to tune it to F. Why is that
Hi Ging. Is it a short neck baglama or long neck baglama that you have? A long neck normally have 23 frets, while a short neck have 19 frets, as mentioned here:
salamuzik.com/blogs/news/difference-between-short-neck-and-long-neck-baglama-saz
If you have a short neck, then you should be able to tune it to F. If not then the string quality is too poor. This is actually quite common, so you need to buy better strings.
If, it is a long neck baglama, then you cannot tune to F (too high). You should tune to D (A G D) and then use a capo in 3rd position to get the F.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
@@KlausM ive got a short neck but its the cheapest baglama out of the bunch 120 euro. So i was wondering if it was because of the quality of the baglama itself that made it not possible to tune to F. that perhaps only baglama that are priced above 500 euro would be able to. So this is not the case ? Ill order a new set of strings and see if it happens again. If it does. Should i buy a more expensive short neck baglama or is that irrelevant ? Good idea to use capo as last resort. For short neck DGA tuning 4th fret capo i will get the FBC tuning correct?
@@gingfreecss3467 You should be able to tune in C Bb F with a short neck using proper strings, no matter the quality of the saz. The quality has mainly to do with the sound. Cheap baglamas, often come with very poor stock strings.
www.thomann.de/dk/pyramid_saz_676_7.htm
It is not good to tune a short neck in A G D, because of the very loose string tension, so that should be a last resort.
It would have been easier to just use the loop instead of cutting it off and bending the string. That's why it's there.
Yes. With this video I want to show how the strings normally are put on. However, if there is a loop or ball end, then this can of course be used.
graphite,, it isnt carbon
