  • I have been growing pretty fond of this tuning for Baglama Saz lately.This works well on a long neck, but if you want to try a similar tuning for Short neck you can use GGD

    Hello, thank you so much for doing your videos! I'm from New Zealand in the southern hemisphere but am looking to buy a Saz online, then start learning it. I travelled Turkey a few years ago and loved the Saz but never picked one up. I have a couple of question: If you could only get one Saz would it be a short one or a long one, and why? Would you consider making a video on how to choose a Saz? Thank you again 🙏

    if you like low sounding tuning i recommend kara/bozuk düzen with a middle string thats one octave lower than usual.
    u need to buy a new string then obviously

      Here's a quick Video of a guy playing a saz with an octavated middle string.
      This actually makes your middle string the lowest sounding one. Which is why the middle string is used as the keynote.
      This style of playing is very popular and I would say unique to central anatolia

      @@OnkelTuerke Awesome, sounds almost like a Divan Saz. It's just one of the middle strings replaced with a lower octave/thicker string or both of the middle strings?

    • @OnkelTuerke
      @OnkelTuerke Před 3 lety

      @@Guitar101Ramstein Ok maybe the example ive given you isnt really ideal because the saz in the video actually is a divan saz (its got a 48 cm body). But as long as your saz is like 40 cm or bigger you can still replace the top one of the middle strings with a thicker string (You just need to replace one of the strings, to answer your question). Of course you would have to adjust the saddle and neck according to the thickness of the newer string.

    If you want to try a really fun tuning remove the two middle strings and then tune it DG
    D being the low/top two strings

    Hey Ramstein! I’m planning to buy a baglama in the near future and I’ve been binging your videos. Sorry if you’ve answered this at some point but I have a questions. How delicate is the baglama in terms of string tension/ neck stability. Is it like a guitar where it’s dangerous to tune your strings around Willy-nilly and do you need to find different string gauges? Or can you tune around a few half steps with no problems?

    • @Guitar101Ramstein
      @Guitar101Ramstein  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks and good question. The strings are pretty delicate and easy to break when you change and experiment with tuning. I still sometimes break them when I think I won't with tuning changes. The stability of the actual instrument (neck jand sound board/body) of course depends on the quality of the instrument, I would treat it iike a classical/nylon string guitar for the most part in that respect, as no truss rod, string tension is relative. In general you should be able to go up a half to a whole step without any issues, down a whole step and more should not be a problem either until you get fret buzz.
      Best advice I can give is order some extra strings, a few packs :) If you experiment with tuning you will break them here and there.Keep in mind overall tension on the instrument for stress on neck and body, and don't leave it sitting and high tension for too long.

      I'm not sure how common they are, but one of my saz has a strip of metal in the neck for stability. A bit like a truss rod in a guitar neck, although not adjustable. This particular saz was made to cope with variations in climate. That said, my other saz has not got metal strengthening and it copes fine with the varying climate in the UK and different tunings.
