At the Paris premiere, one chef was overheard saying "It took an animated rat for Hollywood to finally get a food movie right." Remy's passion, the food prep, and Ego being transported back to his childhood, all of these are things the movie got right. Food is love, its preparation is passion. And a commercial kitchen is just pressure all the time.

There's fan theory that the old woman at the beginning of the film is Anton Ego's mother. The old woman wore pink like Anton's mother in the flashback, & she clearly had experience in cooking, hence how Remy was able to learn from her cookbooks. Also, it's believed that given the flashback we get from Anton's childhood, he's so critical of other cooks because no one in his mind will ever be better than his mother. So, when Anton eats Remy's food, it reminds him of his mother who's probably too old to cook anymore, & it brings an additional meaning of the phrase "just like mom used to make."

This story is also proof against the cultist doctrine, "But I need to IDENTIFY!" "I have to see ME!"
      No.
No, you don't. In fact, that's the true power of a story, when we can understand and cheer for someone who on the surface does not seem like us at all, but through their experiences, we realize share what's inside. We learn vicariously through our heroes in our stories.
In fact, this movie _does_ address that well. "A great artist can can come from any where -- any ONE. And we have no right to condemn them no matter how humble their origin." Remy learned to stop pretending. Yes, he IS a rat, but his is family, and he IS a chef. Sometimes life is weird. But it is good.

@@gryffen9608Extremely well said. I could not have said it better myself. Well, potentially, but I’d have to write a whole damn speech in order to do it. Thank you for addressing this in a far neater and less explosive manner than I tend to; I have a tendency to rant and can get very abrasive and even outright cruel in some of my rants, which likely doesn’t help me get through to the people who really should be getting the message. I’m just so unbelievably sick of mentalities like what you addressed here. (I’ve also adopted my own mentality that if I’m gonna be the bad guy for being pretty much everything that’s trendy to vilify nowadays, I’ll be the bad guy. Screw it. I’d rather be hated for being an asshole than be insincerely loved for lying to myself and putting up a façade of goodwill and “love” for everyone that vanishes the instant I disagree with someone. I detest frauds more than almost anything.) So yeah, I appreciate you speaking on this arguably very crucial subject in a way that might actually get through to some people. Hopefully, at least. This movie came out at a weird time for Pixar. It showed how Pixar could make an animated movie without it "being for kids", which is how animation is mainly seen in the US. But then they got bought by Disney and Disney didn't know how to market the movie... since Disney made kids animation movies. I feel Pixar could have advanced animation more into how it's done in Japan; where animation is just another form of media, instead of being only for kids, but Disney held them back.

Hi Dasha! The food critics remembering of his childhood is a reference to Marcel Proust’s books, A la recherche du temps perdu, or in English, Rememberance of Things Past. Proust remembers as a boy savoring the taste a small cakes called “Madeleine”. These small, delicately favored cakes that are often bought in pastry shops but the skilled home baker can make at home. Proust calls it an involuntary memory that brings back the longing, sentimental thoughts of his past. It was written at the beginning of the 20th century and have been called the greatest work of the century.

I think the old lady was less upset about a rat in her kitchen than she was that someone was trying to pilfer her saffron.
    That shit ain't cheap.
A single ounce can cost hundred of dollars. Kinda like weed.

I think saffron might be literally more expensive than gold, weight for weight.

😎👍 I just did a search of your channel to see what other Disney/Pixar films you've already seen. So far, in addition to "Ratatouille," you've also watched "Encanto," "The Incredibles," "Up," "Toy Story," "Monsters Inc," "Coco," and "Wall-E." 🤗 There are still a lot of great ones out there to check out: "A Bug's Life," "Finding Nemo," "Brave," "Soul," "Luca." 🤓 additionally, you would definitely enjoy all the sequels to "Toy Story" (there are three more of them) and the second "Incredibles" is also really good. 😉

I took my then-grade-school nieces to see this; the elder one, Marina, was so taken with this movie, immediately afterwards she expressed a strong desire to cook something. Would that I could have obliged her ... unfortunately, in those days, my brother and sister-in-law's kitchen was a disorganized mess.
