Excellent fishing ahead of the flush

  • After heavy rains I decided to go fishing ahead of the flush that I knew was coming.
    I headed to the far lower reaches of the Ovens River to stay ahead of the floodwater. I knew the river would still be OK to fish, but wasn't expecting the great fishing that I encountered.
    I had an absolute blast catching plenty of carp and also a couple of small Murray cod.
    I love fishing in that area and look forward to returning once the flood waters receed.

    Picture early 1960's. The elders of my family have lived through WWII and Korea. They are survivors of depression era parents. So they practice tight finances. An uncle I fished with showed me how to prepare carp for eating. Caught carp were taken home and placed in livestock water troughs. Just tap water for a few days. You could see a color change as the clean water cycled out some of the mud. Then they are filleted. A carp fillet is thick. Lots of shoulder and back. As soon as they come off the skin you cut the mud line (lateral line that is always dark in color and tends to be oily, and strong fishy smell/taste). Then use your favorite cooking method to produce some massive fillets of nice flakey white meat. Tis is where I learned to bread with corn meal. This process actually produced a very tasty fillet in abundance. I've rambled. Maybe you'll try a holding tank for carp. See the difference those few days of clean water make. My uncle loved to fish. His sister (my Mum) was an awesome cook. Anytime I could persuaded her into fillets that's what I had for breakfast. There are other recipes where carp meat is used to make fish cakes. Again, the economic mentality comes to play. Like salmon cakes but very inexpensive and a very tasty meal. Gosh, have I rambled on here. Just sharing.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for sharing, that is wonderful. I have tried eating them several different ways and on each occasion they were poor eating.
      The last time I ate them the.fleshnwas nice, but the bones were horrendous.

    • @papeep2694
      @papeep2694 Před rokem

      @@robbiefishing as I aged I learned that my uncle must have been a fillet master craftsman lol. It took me quite a bit of trial and error till I could get boneless fillets. It's a delicate process. A raw (untreated) carp tends to be oily and fishy in taste. But those few days of fresh water before processing really changes all that bad. Another possibility may be the difference in breeds between here and there? Also here I noticed carp taken from waters in areas heavy with limestone tend to be "skunky". Sometimes almost a sulfur smell if you processed them which trial and error ended quickly. Also waters with higher oxygen content (moving waters) produce a better fish than still waters. Now carp eating is not the norm here. More don't than do. There is an old "carp recipe" that circulates heavily here. Perfect carp dinner. Take a 1" thick cedar plank the size of the carp. Prepare the carp to your favorite fish recipe. Place it on the cedar plank and bake to desired texture. Remove carp, eat the cedar plank lol. So it's not a popular practice. Here we have many species of smaller fish like bluegill, sunfish, perch, an assortment of bass other than large mouth bass. These are lumped together under one of two terms. The northern states tend to call these species panfish. The southern states tend to use the term bream. But all of these are very tasty table fare with bones being the only difference. Some are easier to cut bone free than others. If I'm sharing things you already know I apologize. I'm fascinated by various cultural differences. When I first learned that New Zealand and Australia practice fishing for sharks from a rubber ring I was like sign me up lol. But I've seen those videos. Some of those fishermen take some wild rides depending what they tie into. That practice hasn't hit the US in a widespread way just yet. I know New Zealand has a name for that sort of fishing but I can't recall it just now.

    Hi Rob,
    I just watched this video and I think you're doing an excellent job, but the part where you kill the carp and kick it back into the water I disagree because the carp floats and eventually bloats and stinks and end's up on the bank somewhere. I kill the carp and then cut them across the belly until I hear their airbag burst and then I throw them back into the water. This way they sink to the bottom for the shrimp and yabbys to eat instead of ending up on the bank somewhere stinking the place out.

    Love watching the carp action…I absolutely hate our laws on Carp.
    I used to have a fantastic honey hole along the banks of The Torrens River in Adelaide’s CBD, fair smack in the city I always used a paternoster with sweet corn and used to walk away with at least 20 every session which I then used as burley and bait for Bronze Whaler shark.
    That was a night time spot, usually from about 6-7pm right through to 1-3am and it was only about a 15min drive from home.
    Now the government in it’s infinite wisdom has decided to install those electric net/cage systems and now you can sit there for 6hrs without a single nibble.
    The Torrens is now dead, unfortunately I can’t afford the fuel to drive an hour and a half to Bowhill on the Murray regularly so now my Carp sessions are few and far between

      Glad to help you out. Head towards Singleton and fish Lake St Clair for Bass. Head north to Bulahdelah and you will catch bass all along the river towards the Myall Lakes. Also fishing the water near Maitland in the Hunter will get you bass. If you want trout your looking at Barrington Tops I'd say. But you have Glenbawn not far away and Lake St Clair which are two prime fishing dams. Lots of bass country heading west from Newcastle

    Robbie.... You know I love your films buddy but may I respectfully suggest that you find another method of inducing a permanent slumber for the carp, the "wangaratta waltz" wasn't a good look my friend. Could you fillet them and use them as a source of free dog food.? My dog goes nuts for fish.! Or could you use chunks of them in your crayfish/yabby nets.?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey mate thanks for the feedback. Believe me though mate, the way I kill carp is waaaaay better than the vast majority of people that just leave them on the bank to flap around and die a slow painful death. You're right, it's not a good look, but I bet the carp appreciates the sudden death rather than a prolonged and painful death. Most people just throw them on the bank to die slowly and then stink the bank up.

      @@robbiefishing please don't think that I was having "a go" at you mate, and I apologise if that's how I came across. You're correct in what you say about your method being much quicker than the "fling them up the bank crew". Us trout fishers here in the UK use a tool called a "priest" to administer the last rights, basically a small heavy cosh, hard rap on the back of the head and the job is done. 👍

      @@robbiefishing you're totally welcome mate. I know the feeling about having people from "carp countries" being upset at our national dislike of them. One guy who has a fairly large youtube channel that focuses heavily on them says he even doubts that they have any negative effect on waters that hold them. I suggested he looks at the studies conducted on the Murray-Darling system and how its biomass is now about 90% carp. On another note - I'm hoping we get some rain soon. We've had a very dry winter and my local spot yesterday was down to about 18 inches of water where it's normally around 3 feet deep. Good for killing tilapia but bad for the little natives in there with them.

I wonder, if the sizes you get have do with the Australian conditions somehow... I would suspect they would be fine with the hot summer and mild winter, but carp specialists would know better..
