How to kill a carp

  • NON AUSTRAILAN PEOPLE: PLEASE READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION
    Here in Australia carp are classed as a declared noxious species. Here is Victoria the rule book says "Carp can not be returned to the water alive".
    I understand that carp are a much loved fish in other parts of the world, but here in Australias fragile eco system they are not.
    Personally, I think they are a scapegoat for a lot of larger issues such as lack of riparian vegetation, poor in stream habitat, controlled water flows etc.. however I do understand that they pose a threat in a number of ways.
    That is why we are not allowed to release carp. In some states it is allowed, although not recommended, in other states it is not allowed.
    Because I usually leave the scene out of my video when I kill carp, people often ask me how I kill them and how I dispose of them.
    My usual way me appear to be quite graphic, however it is quick and humane as it results in an instant death to the carp.
    And before anybody comments, no it is NOT illegal in Victoria to return dead carp to the water.

      The baseball bat or hatchet method are the two best comments I've read so far because its important to apply the most amount of force in the least number of strikes. The size of the fish is also a factor. The RSPCA recommends use of a blunt object and I think from memory the RSPCA dislike using knives. The problem however is that a rolling pin will kill smaller fish but as you go above 30 or 40cm the thickness of the bone protecting the brain increases so you will just end up just stunning it, so using a knife in the gills/neck, despite what the VFA or RSPCA say, seems practical/humane for large ones if you're not carrying a small axe.

    50 years ago when there were still fish in Bass Strait we used to go after couta off Bridport in a small tinny. Pretty nasty having them flap around your feet so we found a suitable wooden club, held the fish over the front of the tinny and gave them a whack on the head. Result was an instantly dead couta and the bonus was they fell off the jig and also shed most of their scales. Not long after you could see every couta boat silhouetted against the evening sky with a club swinging away. :) I still like eating a piece of couta with chips. Tassie folk weren't too wealthy back then, so rabbit, wallaby, couta was all prized for the table. But everyone could afford crayfish........

    Here in the Australian Capital Territory and in neighbouring New South Wales, it is legal to return carp to the place where you caught it. You cannot transport live fish, nor put them into another body of water. However, the myth persists that it is illegal to return them. I get abused all the time for returning them live. But I really do not care. When the rivers are flowing, the politicians stop selling under the table water rights to corporate farms and mines and there is some serious re-establishment of ecosystems, habitat, and native fodder species, riparian vegetation is regrown and snags choke out the rivers again, and the rivers are allowed to flood for months at a time into the plains, then maybe we will see an improvement in the rivers. Until such a time, killing one carp or 10 million of them will make not one iota of difference. They are NOT the problem.

    At first, we thought surely we'd eradicate them in a year or two because we killed so many... Then, after about 5-6 years, we realized it didn't make any difference how many slaughtered - inevitably there would be MANY more the next year... (and fewer bass, bluegill, and pike)...

I personally am against returning carp corpses to the water, especially large fish or large numbers. However, I am also totally against just leaving them on the bank to stink up the place. If you cannot take the corpse with you to be properly dealt with, the fish should be returned in my opinion. And by properly dealt with, I do not mean throwing it in the bin. I mean, utilising the corpse for good purpose (food, bait, fertiliser). Otherwise, it is just gratuitous murder.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman Před 3 lety

      Lets get one thing straight here. Carp did not invade the waterways. They were introduced, in many places deliberately. In fact, it was common knowledge back in the day that Vic Fisheries had a role in the hybradisation program that led to the development of Boolara Carp, the strain we have in this country (although it has gotten increasingly difficult to find the articles discussing this from old magazines and places). They are a hybrid fish, developed in Victoria, so, is that not at least naturalised, if not exactly native? Found nowhere else in the world... The Australian waterways by the 1960s were practically devoid of fish. The trout had smashed the smelt, gudgeon and galaxia populations. the dams, weirs and other structure prevented migratory spawning runs, triggered by flooding, which no longer occurs. Commercial fishing, the clearance of snags for flood damage mitigation and generally degradation of the rivers, and the banks through the removal of bankside (riparian) vegetation leading to erosion, bank collapse and lack of insect life as food sources, siltation from lack of flow and many other factors were responsible for our waterways becoming devoid of natives, before the carp even had a presence. When the carp were released, they had no competition, so for 20 years they spread, unhindered, and a welcome relief to inland anglers who now had something to target. When the native fish breeding programs developed methods for mass production of native species, these were reintroduced, and the fruits of this can be seen today, with larger natives turning up more regularly and in good numbers. HOWEVER, these natives are all stocked. Few natives now breed in the polluted, artificial environment we created. The ONLY self reproducing food sources for these fish are CARP and Redfin Remove these and the natives will just eat each other, an expensive menu.
      Secondly - there is absolutely NO basis to the myth that other fish are pushed out by carp, particularly redfin and brown trout, as these are from EXACTLY the same waters in Europe as the carp are from. They have shared the waterways in England with carp for 2000 years, since the Romans introduced these inedible fish as a FOOD SOURCE!!! The most widely farmed animal in the world, yet it is inedible. Do you think we ought to tell the world they have it all wrong? Rather, in particular with Trout, our waters are marginal at best for their survival. Too warm, too little oxygen from lack of flow and too few snags from "management" removal programs leads to an unsuitable environment for trout, redfin and natives, all of which are ambush predators which are very structure oriented. However, this environment is eminently suited to carp, a pelagic free swimmer with no real need for structure of any kind.
      Thirdly - It amuses the heck out of me to hear Australian anglers whinge about carp being inedible. As noted already, they are eaten world wide. But more so than that - NO angler I know regularly keeps natives, trout or even Redfin for the table. So what does it matter that we do not eat carp. We are not eating the other fish either 😂😂😂Besides, the birds and other fish that eat carp disagree. They would be very hungry if such a large and available smorgasbord was removed. The environment would also greatly miss the nutrients that pre-eaten, processed carp in the form of droppings provides. Like salmon in North America/Canada provide great boosts to the nutrient load during their runs, when other animals eat them and transfer this nutrient load to the surrounding soils.
      Just a few things to think on, mate, next time you find yourself tempted to denigrate these wonderful creatures.

    • @billyschuster4296
      @billyschuster4296 Před 3 lety +1

      They are wonderful mate, I defiantly wasn’t saying that they weren’t and it gives us more of a chance to catch something while freshwater fishing, what I was saying was it’s a shame that they dirty the water and effect the quality of the water and we have less chance of catching native fish.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman Před 3 lety +1

      @@billyschuster4296 Both those points are easilly refuted as additional myths mate. They do not muddy the water, as proven by the fact that they live in many absolutely crystal clear creeks, rivers and ponds here. And in England and France, they describe many carp habitats as Gin clear. So much for muddying the water. Lack of riparian vegetation allowing the banks to get undercut, eroded and collapsed by water flow, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and other hard hooved Ferals cause huge damage to the banks and muddy the watering holes. In fact, carp have a positive impact on water quality as they stir up the sediments and silt that sits upon the substrate causing anaerobic conditions in the river bed, which leads to sulphur gases, nitrogen and ammonia and methane build up in the substrate.
      They DO NOT affect your chances of catching native fish in the least. That is totally a falsehood. Unsuitable habitat, modified and destroyed by people, is responsible for much of the lack of native fish in places carp frequent. I have often caught natives and carp without moving location, on the same baits. In fact, your chances of catching a big native is increased when there are carp present as the native fodder species are pretty much gone, and there is no attempt to restock them. So without carp, and redfin, which are the only naturally spawning fish in most of the impoundments and rivers now, there is a major hole in the food chain, leading to stunted growth and predation upon each other among the natives. Not to mention the native water birds which eat large numbers of fish, such as pelicans, darters, cormorants etc. In short, there is absolutely no basis to the contention native fish are pushed out by carp, and as for redfin and brown trout, they are native to the same waters in Europe as the carp are. So, again, the common popular misconception is easilly refuted, but noone questions the spurious wisdom that has led to this belief. Clearing snags led to Old Mate going to his favourite cod hole, and finding only carp there, he screamed about carp pushing out the natives. In reality, it is the removal of all the snags that led to the natives leaving, and the carp merely moved in to take advantage of a nice niche left wide open for them. Being pelagic scavengers, they do not have the same reliance on structure as our natives, redfin and brown trout, all of which are sedentary ambush predators.
      Sorry to allow facts to stand in the way of a great myth, but there you are. Something to ponder. If you start with the basis that NOTHING you know about carp is true, and apply critical thinking, you might just come to some sensible conclusions about things, like until the rivers are restored in flow and habitat, natives are always going to suffer.

      @@robbiefishing Can't win. I cop all the backlash and hate for NOT killing carp lol. As discussed before though, I have my well considered reasons, other people have myth and popular opinion. So I will use my logic and reason to debunk any and all of the myths that abound around carp and their horrendous destructive powers (which strangely only exist in this country, not in Europe or Africa or Asia where they are farmed for food fish, and swim with other species in clean, clear water. Damn, I wish our carp was like theirs. Our fish are inedible, they muddy and foul the water and kill or force out our natives. No wonder we have to kill these monstrous beasts. They must be an alien species. What a crock of codswallop it all is!)

      "Um, carp can't fly"
      "You don't know what you are talking about, idiot!"
      Trying to defeat public perception and urban myth is harder than making up outrageous lies. This is not helped by the government bodies who produce "fact sheets" which perpetuate myths, such as "carp muddy and pollute the water". The fact that I fish in crystal clear creeks, ponds and lakes for them does not seem to matter. Everyone KNOWS they foul the environment. And they push out our natives, even though I regularly catch natives, carp and redfin without even changing the bait I am using, much less locations. If all the other fish are pushed out by the carp, where are all these fish coming from? Or, are they a form of carp which is just mimicking the natives which they pushed out? I am confused now. In Europe, they obviously have a really nice, benign form of carp. Edible, lives with trout and other species happily, swims in gin-clear waters. Oh, why, oh why, can't our monsters be like that?
